Chapter 250: Mirror Dungeon (1)
The maze shifted behind them the moment they moved deeper, every reflection along the walls rippling in response.
Kai noticed it first. "...They’re watching."
Sera glanced into the nearest crystal surface. Her reflection didn’t copy her stance. It raised its sword first.
Silence.
Elden studied another mirror a few feet away, tilting his head slightly. "...Interesting."
Kai glanced over. "They’re delayed."
Elden shook his head slowly. "No. They’re anticipating."
Everyone tightened up after that, the easy pace from earlier gone entirely.
A crystal wall rippled, and a figure stepped free from it. Kai. Exactly Kai, down to the Fractured Blade in his hand, the same stance, the same faint tension in his shoulders. The Ashen Seal shimmered into existence behind him, weapons already orbiting.
Kai smiled. "...Well."
He raised his own blade. "That’s unsettling."
Mirror Kai attacked immediately.
The instant the reflection stepped forward, five weapons erupted around it. Tempest Fang spun through the corridor in a spiral of wind before releasing a compressed shockwave that shattered every mirror lining the walls. Mirror Bloodthorn vanished into the air, circling silently around Kai’s blind side. Mirror Rootbreaker came crashing downward with enough force to split the stone corridor apart.
At the same time, silver threads shot from impossible angles. Not one. Ten. Twenty. They crossed over each other into a web that threatened to trap Kai before he had even taken a second step.
Kai smiled. "...You’ve really been watching me." He planted one foot, and Tempest Fang appeared in his own hand.
BOOOOOOOOM!!
Two shockwaves collided head-on. The entire hallway exploded outward, mirror fragments scattering everywhere.
Kai stepped through the smoke. Mirror Bloodthorn darted toward his neck. He didn’t even turn. His own Bloodthorn intercepted it midair.
CLANG!!
The two crimson blades spun away from one another before immediately circling back. Steel rang again. Again. Again. Neither blade found an opening.
Meanwhile, Mirror Rootbreaker reached him, the enormous greatsword descending like a falling building. Kai switched instantly. Rootbreaker.
CRAAAAAASH!!
The two colossal blades collided. The impact split the floor beneath both of them, chunks of crystal bursting from the walls.
The mirror immediately swapped classes, exactly like Kai normally would. Silver threads wrapped around the ceiling, and Mirror Thread Caster swung itself overhead before dropping directly behind him.
Kai laughed. "...You’re annoying."
"You’re welcome."
Sera called from farther down the corridor. Kai twisted.
Pulse Fist.
BOOOOOOOOM!!
Compressed force erupted from his fist, and the shockwave tore straight through the incoming threads. Mirror Bloodthorn lost control. Mirror Tempest Fang was knocked completely off course. Even Rootbreaker slid several meters backward.
Kai immediately understood. "...You don’t improvise."
The mirror repeated another familiar sequence. Tempest. Bloodthorn. Threads. Rootbreaker. Exactly the same order.
Kai smiled. "...Then let’s change the rules."
Blue light flashed.
[Class Emulation: Pulse Fist – Partial.]
Instead of switching again, he committed. Another Pulse Fist. Then another. Then another. Each shockwave disrupted every weapon before the mirror could finish changing classes, and its rhythm collapsed.
Kai appeared directly in front of it. One clean slash. The reflection shattered into thousands of glittering fragments.
Silence returned.
Kai lowered his sword. "Good. It remembers but doesn’t learn."
Elden nodded. "Exactly."
The crystal walls trembled again. Golden light flooded the corridor. Mirror Sera stepped through, and before anyone could move, dozens of radiant swords already filled the ceiling.
Sera immediately raised her shield. The first volley fell.
CLANG! CLANG! CLANG!
Golden blades crashed against her shield like rain, explosions echoing through the corridor. The mirror never stopped attacking, its shield spinning through the hallway like a gigantic circular blade. Halfway through its flight, Mirror Sera disappeared.
Position Swap.
She appeared behind the real Sera with her sword already descending. Sera caught it at the last possible moment, sparks exploding between both blades.
She smiled. "...Not bad."
The mirror answered with another Light Wave, a golden crescent racing toward her. Sera swung, and her own Light Wave collided with it.
BOOOOOOOOM!!
The shockwave shattered another entire section of mirrored walls.
Both Valkyries charged simultaneously. Shield met shield. Sword met sword. Neither gave an inch. The impacts echoed like bells throughout the dungeon.
Then both of them activated full enhancement. Golden light flooded the chamber, and speed exploded. To Kai, they almost disappeared. Only flashes of gold remained. One clash. Another. Another. Hundreds within seconds.
Finally both raised one hand, and thousands of radiant swords materialized overhead. The corridor disappeared beneath golden steel.
Sera laughed. "...Let’s finish this."
Both gigantic swords began forming above the battlefield, the air itself trembling beneath the mana. The mirror finished charging. Sera was already moving.
"...Too slow."
Her sword descended first.
BOOOOOOOOOOM!!
The two colossal blades collided, and golden light swallowed the entire chamber. When it faded, only one Valkyrie remained standing. Mirror Sera quietly dissolved into floating light.
Kai whistled. "...Never sparring seriously with you."
Sera smiled. "You’ve already made that mistake."
The mirrors learned. The next chamber opened. Three crystal portals appeared together. Mirror Kai. Mirror Sera. Mirror Elden. They attacked simultaneously.
But this time something changed. Mirror Kai suddenly vanished.
Position Swap.
Kai’s eyes widened. "...That’s Sera’s."
Mirror Sera fired silver threads. Mirror Elden summoned Arc Lances while gravity doubled beneath everyone’s feet. The dungeon wasn’t copying them anymore. It was combining them.
Kai grinned. "...Now we’re talking."
Sera raised her shield. "Finally."
Elden calmly lifted his staff. "They’re making the same mistake."
Kai blinked. "They’re trying to copy abilities."
Elden nodded. "...Not teamwork."
Mirror Kai attacked first. Kai intercepted. Mirror Sera tried to flank. Sera was already waiting. Mirror Elden activated another battlefield.
Elden smiled. "...Third anchor."
Kai destroyed it instantly. Half the battlefield collapsed. Another gravity field appeared.
"Left."
Kai cut that one apart too.
The mirrors kept switching abilities. Thread Caster. Position Swap. Arc Lance. Pulse Fist. Everything looked perfect, yet every exchange felt delayed, artificial, because they needed time to decide who used what. Kai’s group didn’t.
Kai moved before Sera even noticed an opening. Sera blocked attacks Elden hadn’t finished warning about. Elden called out traps before the mirrors themselves committed to them. They weren’t reacting to each other. They already understood each other. The mirrors couldn’t replicate that.
Within minutes Mirror Kai shattered. Mirror Sera followed. Mirror Elden collapsed last.
The corridor finally became quiet. Kai looked around at the destroyed chamber. Broken mirrors covered the floor, cracks stretching across every wall. The dungeon had thrown everything it knew at them, and still lost.
Sera rested her sword across one shoulder. "...I guess teamwork really is unfair."
Kai laughed. "For the dungeon."
Elden adjusted his glasses. "...And that’s why it could never copy us."
The three continued deeper into the dungeon together as the shattered mirrors slowly dissolved behind them, the dungeon already preparing whatever challenge came next.
The dungeon refused to give up. The crystal walls rippled. Then they shattered.
Dozens of Crystal Wolves burst from every reflective surface, their bodies seemingly woven from ice and mirrors. They didn’t charge across the floor. They leaped between reflections, vanishing into one wall before bursting from another several meters away.
One appeared directly beneath Kai’s feet, its jaws snapping shut. Kai vanished with an Air Step, his Fractured Blade carving straight through its neck before it fully emerged. The shattered wolf dissolved into glittering shards. More immediately replaced it.
Mirror Archers materialized high above, standing on crystal ledges that shouldn’t have existed. Their arrows ignored every obstacle, curving through impossible angles before diving toward the trio.
Sera raised her shield.
CLANG! CLANG! CLANG!
Golden sparks erupted as arrow after arrow slammed into the barrier.
Behind them, Mirror Knights stepped out of solid crystal as if it were water, swords already descending. Kai spun. Ashen Seal exploded outward. Tempest Fang released a violent shockwave that blasted one Knight backward while Bloodthorn pierced another through the chest, and Rootbreaker crashed into a third, reducing both armor and crystal floor to rubble.
Yet before their fragments even touched the ground, Mirror Mages raised glowing staffs. The exact same shockwave erupted back toward Kai. His eyes widened. "...They copied it."
BOOOOOOOM!!
The returning blast smashed into him, forcing him backward across the crystal floor.
At the same moment Sera unleashed a sweeping Light Wave, the golden crescent tearing through an entire line of Wolves. Then every mirror surrounding the chamber flashed. Ten identical Light Waves burst from every direction.
"Sera!" Kai shouted.
She slammed her shield into the ground. Golden light erupted around them as the copied attacks crashed against her defense, explosions echoing throughout the chamber.
Across the battlefield Elden fired an Arc Lance, the piercing beam erasing three Mirror Mages in a single strike. The crystal ceiling answered immediately. One beam became two. Then four. Arc Lances rained from above like a storm.
Elden’s expression hardened. "...It’s learning."
Kai cut apart another Wolf as realization struck him. "...No. It’s using us to strengthen itself."
Elden nodded without looking away from the battlefield. "...Then stop giving it patterns."
Kai immediately abandoned every familiar sequence. Instead of flowing smoothly between styles, he switched weapons almost randomly.
Tempest Fang became Pulse Fist.
Pulse Fist became Thread Caster.
Before the mirrors could imitate one attack, he was already fighting with another.
Silver threads pulled Wolves into Sera’s path. A shockwave launched Kai over an incoming Knight. Rootbreaker disappeared before finishing its swing, replaced instantly by the Fractured Blade. Nothing repeated. Nothing followed rhythm.
Beside him, Sera smiled. "...Got it."
She intentionally delayed every strike, sometimes attacking immediately, sometimes waiting, sometimes canceling halfway through before exploding into motion a heartbeat later.
The copied Light Waves began missing completely.
Mirror Archers fired toward where she should have been. She was already somewhere else.
Meanwhile, Elden stopped casting offensive spells entirely. Instead, stone pillars erupted beneath advancing enemies. Crystal walls folded across the battlefield.
Mirror surfaces shattered before they could produce more reflections. He wasn’t attacking the monsters anymore. He was dismantling the dungeon itself.
Without repeated patterns to feed on, the mirrors quickly lost their perfect coordination. Mirror Wolves lunged into dead ends. Mirror Knights collided with one another. Copied spells fired into empty corridors. The flawless assault unraveled into chaos.
Kai smiled. "...Now."
The three surged forward together, and one after another the remaining reflections shattered into glittering crystal dust until the corridor finally fell silent once again.
[Distortion Applied.] [Drop Quality: Optimized.]
A Reflection Crystal landed among the shattered glass. A Mirror Core beside it. An Echo Shard, still faintly humming. An Adaptive Mana Stone, pulsing with a rhythm that seemed to shift every few seconds.
Kai picked up the Adaptive Mana Stone and turned it slowly in his hand. "...Lily’s going to love this."
The dungeon finally quieted, and Sera nudged Kai as they walked. "So."
Kai glanced over. "...What?"
"Is fighting you always that annoying?"
Kai smiled. "You survived."
"I barely did."
Elden added quietly, "I preferred fighting Mirror Kai, personally."
Kai blinked. "...Really?"
"He followed recognizable patterns."
Silence.
Kai sighed, dramatic. "...That somehow feels like an insult."
Sera laughed. "It absolutely was."
Even Elden allowed himself a small smile at that.
Eventually the maze opened into a massive circular chamber, hundreds of mirrors ringing an enormous set of stone doors at its center. Unlike every corridor before it, these mirrors didn’t reflect Kai, Sera, or Elden. They reflected hundreds of different hunters entirely, some faces Kai vaguely recognized from Association records, others completely unfamiliar.
Kai studied them slowly. "...These aren’t us."
Elden stepped closer, examining the nearest one. "...No. These are everyone who’s ever entered this dungeon before us."
Every mirror turned to face them at once, in perfect unison.
