Chapter 150: The Thirteenth Match
Chapter 150
Soon, Liyu rose and, without wasting any time, walked up onto the stage. Before long, he was back on the solid white battle stage. He didn’t need anyone to tell him for him to feel that something had completely changed about it.
The stage felt far sturdier and radiated a calm yet powerful aura, as if it wouldn’t be broken even by the mightiest attacks and strikes. And perhaps Liyu couldn’t have known just how close he was to the truth.
After seeing his handiwork get destroyed twice in a single day, the referee had decided to go all out. Now, the battle stage had been reconstructed to the extent that even Foundation Realm experts could battle on it without leaving more than a few scratches.
No matter whether Liyu survived this round and advanced to the final round, the referee’s mind was finally at ease. He wouldn’t need to repair the stage again.
Or rather, he wouldn’t need to reconstruct another battle stage again. This was more than enough to withstand the freaks still left in the tournament. The tournament is almost over... This stage should be enough.
Tap. Tap. Liyu tapped his foot against the stage a few times, trying to get a better feel for it. After getting a proper sense of the stage beneath him, his gaze sharpened. His senses couldn’t be lying to him. This stage was surely far, far sturdier than the previous ones. Still, he couldn’t allow himself to become distracted by something like that.
So, he focused on the task at hand and turned his gaze toward the Guan camp. Time for my next victim. "Guan Haoran, come onto the stage," Liyu said with the same small and warm smile he had worn ever since entering the tournament.
Back at the Guan camp, Guan Haoran looked at Liyu for a long while. He had known that he would be the one challenged next, yet he wasn’t afraid. Why should he be? Yes, Liyu was freakish.
Possessing so much power and capability while still being at the very first stage of Qi Gathering was mind-numbing, to say the least. His freakish ability to adapt was also something that couldn’t be ignored. But at the end of the day, he was still too weak.
Not weak... But not strong enough either to take the victory. At least, not against me, Haoran thought as he looked at Liyu with amusement and a growing urge to battle. He really wanted to cross blows with him. He wanted to see if he could hurt him.
Haoran stood up, ready to head toward the battle stage, when he suddenly felt someone pull at his sleeve. He turned his gaze and saw Guan Xueyi looking at him with a somber expression. "What is it?"
Haoran asked after noticing the worried look on her face. "Be careful," Xueyi said. She paused for a moment before continuing. "And don’t lose."
Seeing the fear and concern hidden within her gaze, Haoran nodded once as a small smile appeared on the side of his face.
"Don’t worry. I won’t lose." With that, he turned and began making his way toward the battle stage. Liyu might be freakishly strong and abnormal, but for all Guan Haoran cared, he wasn’t worried about himself. Instead, he was more concerned about Liyu.
Because if he became too excited and entered that state... Then Liyu might very well be in danger. Haoran shook his head at that thought. He shouldn’t think too much about it. Sincerely, what he should be worried about was getting bored too early.
After all, if everything Liyu had shown so far was truly the best he could do, then he still wouldn’t be capable of scratching Haoran or making him feel a thing. All Haoran was hoping for was that he wouldn’t become bored and be forced to end things too quickly.
In his opinion, there was only one person capable of forcing him into that state. Shi Tian. Haoran was going to take him out using that state. As for Liyu... He couldn’t really see him lasting more than ten minutes against him.
Soon, Guan Haoran arrived on the stage, looking strong and sturdy. Despite Shi Mo being larger than him, Guan Haoran’s presence carried far more weight and force than Shi Mo had ever possessed.
The moment he stepped onto the battle stage, the atmosphere seemed to change. Guan Haoran looked at Liyu with a calm and steady gaze before speaking. "You should go all out and showcase the best abilities in your arsenal."
He paused briefly, his gaze remaining completely calm. "Or else, I might not be able to guarantee that you’ll last long enough."
Liyu raised an eyebrow at the large guy’s bold words and gave him a small smile. "Oh, really? I see. Don’t worry, you have no idea what I can do yet." Guan Haoran responded to his smile with one of his own.
"I hope so as well. I really want to have a battle that can at least stimulate me for once after such a long while." "You know, things get boring when those who are supposed to be your opponents aren’t even able to make you feel an itch, not to talk of hurting you or making you feel pain."
Guan Haoran said it in a tone that sounded like someone suffering from overachievement. And the worst thing was the fact that, from his tone, he sounded completely sincere, as if he was merely speaking facts and not bragging at all.
Liyu’s eyes twitched slightly. Then he spoke. "Don’t worry. I would do more than harm you. I will break your bones for you." "No need to thank me. Just take it as a show of good heart from me." Liyu said with a small grin. Haoran raised an eyebrow.
Not because Liyu sounded crazy. Who spoke so casually about breaking another person’s bones as if it were part of his everyday routine? And when he spoke about breaking his bones, he made it sound as if he were doing him a good favor.
Yes, this Liyu was crazy. And he sounded incredibly confident as well. Haoran’s gaze remained calm as he nodded. "Hopefully, you are able to live up to your promise, Honored One." "I have high expectations for this battle."
"Don’t fail me." Haoran said as he extended his hand for a handshake.
Liyu raised an eyebrow at the hand before looking back at the big guy. His eyes seemed to ask a simple question. What was the meaning of this? "Let’s battle to our hearts’ content. No hard feelings," Haoran said with a smile.
Liyu looked at the extended hand. Strangely enough, he couldn’t sense any ill intentions coming from Guan Haoran. Which was strange. It was almost as if the big guy didn’t see him as an enemy and instead simply wanted to have a fun and exciting fight. "What do you say?"
"Let’s battle to our hearts’ content." Haoran said, his hand still raised. Liyu thought for a moment before reaching out and shaking his hand.
"Don’t worry, big guy. I wouldn’t beat you too much, but I would still break your bones, though." Liyu said with a small smile. Haoran’s eyes twitched as he nodded. "You are welcome to try."
The crowd looked at the scene with stunned gazes. For once, it seemed as if there was no hostility between the two fighters standing on the stage. This battle almost appeared similar to the one between the Battle Princess and the Beast Slayer.
Those two had fought without any ill intentions as well, something many people had been able to tell.
And seeing the way Liyu and Haoran were casually chatting, the crowd was beginning to believe that perhaps they weren’t hell-bent on taking things to the extreme like many of the participants in this tournament had done.
What the crowd didn’t know... and what would have frozen them if they did... was the fact that the two men, especially Liyu, weren’t speaking peaceful words at all. Instead, he was openly talking about breaking his opponent’s bones. And that was it.
While Liyu and Haoran spoke, the betting was still ongoing. Surprisingly... or perhaps unsurprisingly... the number of people betting this time had reduced drastically.
The main reason was that some people had finally gone bankrupt. The other reason was that many of them were no longer certain whether they were willing to take such a massive risk in this semifinal matchup.
If this had happened before everyone witnessed just how much of a freak Liyu was, then without any doubt, they would all have rushed to place their bets on Haoran. But what had betting against Liyu taught them? That he was a freak by nature.
A complete and utter monster capable of shattering every expectation they had placed upon him. And after losing their fortunes to him again and again, many of them had finally learned their lesson. Or at least, that was what they believed.
Because even after everything Liyu had shown so far, the sight of Guan Haoran standing on the stage still caused many of their thoughts to waver. After all, this was Guan Haoran. The Iron Behemoth.
A monster whose defense was said to be almost impossible to break. Even Shi Mo, who had displayed enough power to force Liyu to his knees and push him to the absolute limit, had never possessed a body as terrifying as Guan Haoran’s.
And unlike Shi Mo, Guan Haoran had yet to reveal the full extent of his strength. So although many people had been taught painful lessons after betting against Liyu, the temptation to place their faith in the Iron Behemoth was beginning to rise once again.
This time, however, they were far more careful. They had learned that underestimating the Honored One was the fastest way to lose everything. And now, the question echoing through the minds of the entire arena was simple.
Would Liyu’s monstrous strength finally be enough to break through Guan Haoran’s ridiculous defense? Or would the Iron Behemoth become the first person capable of stopping the Honored One’s unstoppable march toward victory?
So naturally, they didn’t want to bet against him anymore and instead wanted to bet on him now. However, they were also totally unwilling to make the bet again after all, Liyu’s opponent for this semifinal was none other than one of the main favorites to win the selection tournament from the very beginning.
Guan Haoran, the Iron Behemoth, and Shi Tian, the Devil of the Shi Clan, were the two people the crowd believed would end up facing each other in the final of the selection tournament. They were the top favorites.
But after everything that had happened, a third option had joined those two. And that figure was none other than Liyu. Of course, he had showcased his skills and proven himself to be more than capable of contesting for the position of the final person standing.
And well, not ironically, those three were the ones remaining. The battles between them could no longer be foretold or predicted.
The crowd had lost enough coins for one day. They weren’t going to risk their precious money again. That was the thought shared by many in the audience as they chose not to place any bets.
Although, there was another reason behind them refusing to bet. The betting odds had dropped for Liyu. His odds had fallen from three to 2.5, while the odds for his opponent, Guan Haoran, had dropped from two to 1.5.
As it seemed, the referee still believed that Guan Haoran had the higher chance of winning this battle. And no one argued against it. After all, the Iron Behemoth’s popularity had even outgrown that of the Battle Princess and the Beast Slayer, rivaling the popularity of the Indomitable Shi Devil himself.
Most of that popularity was due to his prowess, which many found to be beyond the bounds of what could be considered normal. So yes, the crowd believed that this battle might end in Haoran’s favor.
Although, they weren’t able to say so blatantly after everything that had happened. After all, that was how it had been during the last few matches as well.
And yet, Liyu had managed to take the lead and claim victory, shattering every thought and piece of logic the audience possessed. So who was to say that he couldn’t do the same thing once again?
They wondered for a while before eventually stopping. The few hundred people who had decided to take the risk placed their bets, and now everyone was eager to see how this semifinal battle would go.
There was only one thing they all believed. This battle was going to be epic.
Meanwhile, Liyu, standing in the middle of the stage, quickly calculated the amount he was going to earn after taking Haoran down. He had bet everything, staking it all on himself because he wasn’t going to lose.
He was confident in his victory anyway. And after a few seconds of calculation, he realized that he would have over a hundred million gold coins.
That was massive. Liyu grinned and subconsciously licked his lips. He might not even need to rob the Li Clan treasury anymore. He was already filthy rich after all.
Haoran raised an eyebrow as he watched Liyu’s expression flicker. He is weird, Haoran thought before shaking his head. Maybe he hit his head or something.
None of his behavior is normal, that is for sure. He thought for a while before waiting for the referee to come onto the stage and begin their battle. As if summoned by his thoughts, the referee appeared on the stage.
His gaze was calm and composed before he spoke, his voice echoing far and wide, reaching every single inch of the massive coliseum. "Alright, folks. What do you know?
The Li heir, who many of us now recognize as the Honored One, really seems like he intends to fulfill the promise and declaration he made when he first stepped onto this stage a while ago."
The referee didn’t need to say anything else for the crowd to understand his words. Of course, he was talking about Liyu’s declaration. He was talking about how Liyu had boldly announced that he was going to become the sole winner of the entire tournament.
And as much as they hated to admit it, he was actually doing it. He was really close to becoming the sole winner. The referee continued after a dramatic pause. "And guess what? He is now close to fulfilling his declaration.
He has taken down four opponents already, with only two opponents left in his path." The referee paused once more before continuing. "If he manages to pull this off..."
His voice echoed throughout the entire arena. "It would be a staggering achievement!"
The crowd erupted into cheers. "Honored One!" "Honored One!" "Honored One!" The name echoed throughout the arena, with the people shouting the loudest being the ladies who had somehow turned into Liyu’s fangirls after watching his previous battles.
The referee raised a hand, and after the cheers gradually died down, he spoke once more. "Alright! We are now moving on to the semifinal match!"
"For the thirteenth matchup of today, we have Liyu, the Honored One of the Li Clan, facing off against Guan Haoran, the Iron Behemoth of the Guan Clan!" The referee raised his voice. "Let the thirteenth and semifinal match of today’s selection tournament begin!"
The referee said before vanishing from the stage and appearing nearby to monitor the battle closely.
The two warriors remained where they stood for a while, neither of them moving even an inch. The entire arena became strangely quiet. Everyone waited. After a while, Haoran finally spoke calmly. "Iron Skin."
The moment those words left his mouth, a dark shine of metallic energy spiraled around his body. Then, right before everyone’s eyes, his body began to change. It didn’t melt or transform in any strange manner.
Instead, his skin slowly began turning metallic. Starting from his hands, the dark gray metallic color spread upward toward his arms and chest. It then traveled across his legs and covered the other parts of his body.
The metallic color continued spreading until it finally reached his neck and head. Soon, every visible part of Guan Haoran’s body had turned into a dark gray metallic color. The normal human Guan Haoran was gone.
In his place stood a gray metallic warrior whose body looked as if it had been forged from an incredibly powerful metal.
The audience watched with widened eyes.
Even though many of them had already seen Guan Haoran use his Iron Skin before, the sight was still enough to leave them stunned. Haoran slowly crossed his arms over his chest before turning his calm gaze toward Liyu.
Liyu raised an eyebrow as he studied the metallic warrior standing before him. Then Haoran spoke.
"Now then..." His voice was calm, but there was a hint of excitement hidden beneath it. "Come at me with everything you have."
