Chapter 457 - 429: Legend of the Underground Cave World

Qin Ziwen had Lorne send some of his people to experience the assassin training camp.

Lorne selected some of his clever and capable elites, who volunteered to enter the marshland.

SPLASH~

Lorne leaped into the nearest boggy pit, stirring the waterweeds and sending ripples across the surface.

Once he vanished into the pit, all trace of him was gone.

Qin Ziwen stepped forward and shone his flashlight into the water. Only then did he realize that all the pits dotting the marshland were incredibly deep, leading far underground.

Beneath the marsh's water, there was an even vaster subterranean space.

As the Fishmen entered the training camp, the blurry black shadows patrolling the rooftops in the central area gradually came into focus. Their bodies swelled, transforming into massive, pale blue Fishmen with ghastly white bone spikes sprouting from their backs. Based on their appearance, these Fishmen looked far more vicious than those from Lorne's tribe.

The most striking feature was a piece of white paper stuck to each of their faces, on which was written the character for "Enemy."

'Heh, so these are the simulated enemies,' Qin Ziwen mused, observing the large Fishmen with great interest.

Perhaps due to his status as the Lord of the Homeland, the spawned Fishmen completely ignored him, despite his proximity.

'They certainly look strong,' Qin Ziwen mused, making a sizing gesture. 'Compared to the Fishmen in our Home, these look like true pure-bloods.' The group of Fishmen had a particularly fierce appearance, reminiscent of the Hunting Race.

They were typically over three meters tall, with well-proportioned bodies and nimble, agile movements.

Suddenly, one of the simulated Fishmen moved. It lunged forward, as agile as an eel.

Its massive body plunged into the water. A moment later, a bloody mist rose to the surface.

A short while later, a Fishman materialized out of thin air at the entrance to the training camp, a look of lingering shock still on its face.

The other Fishmen gathered around, asking what happened. The newly-spawned Fishman gritted its teeth and said, "I was lurking underwater when something suddenly shot down from above. I was killed before I could even get a clear look at it! But I can tell you this much—I caught its scent. It was definitely a Fishman!"

"AH!" A shriek came from beside them as another Fishman materialized out of thin air.

It touched its chest, which had just been pierced through but was now perfectly intact. "I saw a huge Fishman. It charged at me from overhead—it was incredibly fast and strong. The strange thing is... its face was covered with something, so I couldn't see it."

A nearby Fishman clapped its hands in a moment of realization. "I get it! This training camp is about making us fight these giant Fishmen! Look, over there! Isn't that the one that killed you?"

Following its companion's pointing finger, the just-revived Fishman cried out in astonishment, "You're right, it is!"

Qin Ziwen was beginning to understand the principle behind the Fishman assassin training camp. 'They're engaging in live combat with simulated enemies. If the goal is to cultivate assassins, there's no quicker method than practical experience.'

Plus, the building's effect included a Level 2 Assassination Skill enhancement. It was probably similar to the Celestial Star Arrow Gallery, temporarily boosting their abilities so the skilled could help bring up the unskilled.

Before long, more and more Fishmen were appearing at the training camp's entrance.

After reviving, these Fishmen were unable to re-enter, as if an invisible membrane were blocking their path.

The invisible membrane only dissipated when Lorne, the last one, finally revived at the camp's entrance.

"Even you got taken out?" Qin Ziwen was a little surprised.

Lorne was an Extraordinary. Although he was a caster-type, he wasn't someone an ordinary Fishman could trifle with.

Especially not underwater, which was his home turf.

Lorne looked ashamed. "There's a Fishman nest down there. Hundreds of them poured out. I killed some, but there were just too many, and they ambushed me."

As he said this, Lorne's expression shifted. "Leader, I sense that the Fishmen in there are no simple foes. Their bloodline is purer than my own kin's. They may be the legendary pure-blood Fishmen."

"You've seen pure-blood Fishmen before?"

Lorne replied, "Never. But I've read about them on my tribe's stone tablets. The records say that an adult, pure-blood Hunting Clan Fishman can tame a tiger shark with its bare hands in the open sea."

Qin Ziwen couldn't help but marvel at this. 'The physical prowess of an adult, pure-blood Hunting Clan Fishman is truly incredible.'

Even a human who had reached Five Stars would find it difficult to tame such a beast bare-handed.

This was the inherent gap between races.

Qin Ziwen nodded. "It doesn't matter. As long as you can earn a title from this training camp, you might be able to close that racial gap. If any Fishman in your tribe earns a title, I want you to inform me immediately."

"Yes, Leader! Thank you!"

With that, the Fishman assassin training camp was up and running.

Meanwhile, Blue River had also finished consolidating his tribe. After Black Fin's death, he seized the opportunity and took complete control of the Dark Tide Fishman Tribe.

His methods were swift and decisive. In an instant, nearly all dissenting voices within the tribe had been silenced.

With internal matters settled, he turned his attention to external affairs.

Blue River began to ponder how he might cooperate with the humans.

'Using the ore is an option,' he thought, 'but that batch is reserved for a trade with the Fishman Tuiyuan. If I give it all to the humans, we'll be in deep trouble when the Tuiyuan arrives.'

He knew full well that the Fishmen from the Tuiyuan had never considered them kin.

He only had this one shipment of goods. Giving it to one party meant offending the other.

If he gave it to the humans, the Dark Tide Tribe would suffer when the Fishman Tuiyuan arrived.

If he gave it to the Fishman Tuiyuan, his tribe would suffer right now!

Blue River paced back and forth in his grotto, then suddenly stopped.

"Unless..." he muttered to himself, "unless I can find something even more valuable than the ore."

His expression shifted as a thought suddenly occurred to him.

Blue River turned and left the cave, heading straight for the stone tablets that held the tribe's records.

...

"Your Excellency, I am willing to offer one of my tribe's secrets in exchange for your protection," Blue River said, standing respectfully before Qin Ziwen.

Qin Ziwen glanced at him. "Speak."

Blue River hurriedly explained, "There has always been a legend in this subterranean world. A long, long time ago, a race called the Gray Race built a city in the deepest reaches of the underground. Legend says it was the most prosperous city in our world, all because it contained a divine tree."

"That tree was said to be extraordinary... It bore a kind of shimmering golden fruit, and even the most common of creatures could break through to the Extraordinary realm just by eating one."

"Later, the various races waged a great war over the tree, and the cavern housing the city was buried deep beneath the earth."

"I have spent a long time searching through my tribe's stone tablets, and I have finally found the location of that cavern."

He bowed low, his tone ingratiating. "Today, I offer this secret to you, Your Excellency."

Qin Ziwen looked at him and shook his head. "Your story is full of holes. First, after all these years, you're saying no other race has tried to excavate it? You Fishmen may not be good at digging, but the Insect Men certainly are. Second, after so much time, even if this tree did exist, do you really think it would still be alive? And finally, if your ancestors knew where it was, why didn't they go for it themselves?"
