Chapter 431 - 430: Overlord Stele Suppression
A pitch-black formation suddenly erupted from the ground. A towering pillar of black light shot out, piercing through the air and striking the Celestial Cloud Divine Hall.
BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!
As the terrifying pillar of black light bombarded the Celestial Cloud Divine Hall, the massive Divine Hall was like a sitting duck, easily struck. The entire Celestial Cloud Divine Hall shook violently, as if it could fall from the sky at any moment.
However, it only continued to shake; it could still fly forward. But just as it flew out of the first formation’s range, another one erupted from the ground, viciously striking the Celestial Cloud Divine Hall once more.
"Such a massive Divine Hall, and they still dare to fly this way? They’re simply courting death. I guarantee I’ll shoot you down before you even make it halfway!" the National Preceptor sneered. "You can control Spirit Swords to attack, but I can control all the formations here. Let’s see how you get any closer!"
The National Preceptor continuously manipulated the formations, launching fierce assaults. As soon as the Celestial Cloud Divine Hall flew out of one formation, the next one would immediately activate. It seemed this entire region was filled with formations, sealing off every possible path.
If they continued to fly forward, they would undoubtedly be attacked by countless formations. No wonder no one could get close to the Netherworld Imperial City; they would die on the way. It was similar to the Spirit Sword formation’s attacks—numerous and capable of striking from a great distance.
"This National Preceptor really has a few tricks up his sleeve. No wonder he fled back here. It was all so he could control these formations, wasn’t it?" Yi Tianyun watched the distant National Preceptor with a faint sneer, his composure unshaken.
"Spirit King, although the power of these attacks isn’t overwhelming, if we keep getting hit like this, I fear our defenses will be breached and we’ll be shot down before we’re even halfway there." The Spirit Race Ancestor’s expression was grave. "The outer shield can block many attacks, but the energy consumption is staggering. At this rate, we won’t be able to last much longer."
It wasn’t a lack of Jade Spirit Stones, but rather that the defensive formation was being damaged, and repairs were extremely difficult. They couldn’t be fixed easily in such a short time; the rate of destruction far outpaced their rate of repair.
Everyone turned to Yi Tianyun with grave expressions, wondering what plan he had. If there was no solution, their only option would be to have the Celestial Cloud Divine Hall turn back and stop outside the formations to figure something out.
"Don’t worry, I anticipated this. Otherwise, the National Preceptor wouldn’t have chosen to flee back here after such a humiliating defeat," Yi Tianyun sneered. He raised his hand and tossed something into the air. A massive stone stele descended from the sky, suppressing the area below and crashing heavily onto the ground.
After the massive stele slammed down with a loud THUD, it carved a huge crater in the ground. It then released rings of light that suppressed the formations in a large surrounding area, preventing them from spewing out any more black pillars of light, as if they had been deactivated.
The Overlord Stele!
When they saw the stele, the Spirit Race members immediately recognized it. Their eyes lit up; the Overlord Stele really was the perfect counter to these formations. The Overlord Stele could nullify any Divine Rune at or below the Master level. Since these formations were not made with Grandmaster-level Divine Runes, they could all be suppressed and rendered useless.
The National Preceptor was a Divine Rune Grandmaster, but that didn’t mean he inscribed Grandmaster-level Divine Runes in every single formation—that would have worked him to death. Besides, Master-level Divine Runes were by no means weak; it was just that against the Overlord Stele, they were easily nullified.
"I’d almost forgotten, the Spirit King can control the Overlord Stele! No wonder he was so calm." The Spirit Race Ancestor laughed. This meant they could fly all the way to the Netherworld Imperial City with ease, no longer subject to these frantic attacks.
"I told you, they came prepared, but I came prepared as well!" Yi Tianyun said in a deep voice. "I am responsible for all of you. Recklessly sending you to your deaths is not my style. I fight to win, not to lose! Even if victory is impossible, we must at least be able to retreat fully intact, not with more than half our forces lost."
A thrill of excitement went through everyone’s hearts. ’This is our King!’
"What’s going on? That’s the Overlord Stele! Someone can control it?" When the National Preceptor saw the stele, his face turned extremely ugly. He had conquered the Spirit Race precisely for the Overlord Stele and their other resources.
He had searched high and low for it without success, only to find it had already been claimed and was now being used against him, suppressing his formations and rendering them completely ineffective.
The result was that the Celestial Cloud Divine Hall’s entry was now like a stroll into undefended territory! It advanced with ease, a far cry from the violent shaking it had endured all the way here.
"National Preceptor, what should we do? Should we send archers to shoot them down?" the National Guardian Grand General beside him asked.
"Do you think we stand a chance if we get close to them?" the National Preceptor said grimly.
The National Guardian Grand General froze for a moment. He thought of the tens of thousands of Spirit Swords from before; sending men to attack would surely be a death sentence.
"But if we don’t, are we just going to stand by and watch them approach?" the National Guardian Grand General said in a low voice.
"Of course not. The Overlord Stele has a special effect that only works on Master-level Divine Runes; it’s useless against the Grandmaster level. The real show is yet to come. Let them be smug for now. It will lull them into a false sense of security," the National Preceptor sneered. "The true power of our Netherworld Empire is not so easily overcome!"
The Celestial Cloud Divine Hall flew forward swiftly. Yi Tianyun continuously controlled the Overlord Stele, sending it ahead to suppress and nullify the Divine Runes along the path, clearing the way for them.
When they were about halfway to their destination, the distant National Preceptor revealed a sinister smile, as if he could already see their demise.
But just then, the Celestial Cloud Divine Hall slowly descended, settling down at the halfway point with no intention of flying further. The National Preceptor’s smile froze. He didn’t know what Yi Tianyun was planning. ’Are they just going to have a standoff?’
Yi Tianyun raised a hand, and tens of thousands of Spirit Swords flew into the air. With a forward wave, they shot out with a SWISH! SWISH! SWISH!, like tens of thousands of sharp arrows piercing toward the city. Their targets were all the soldiers on the city walls. Since the distance had been closed considerably, they were well within attack range.
"Not good!"
The Magic Wand in the National Preceptor’s hand released a black light. With a forceful downward thrust, a massive formation instantly activated. A plume of black energy surged out from it like a giant dragon, roaring as it used its massive black physique to block the Spirit Sword attack.
With a violent lash of its body, a huge swathe of Spirit Swords was shattered to pieces with no difficulty at all. The power was simply immense. From a distance, it looked just like a Nether Dragon soaring in the sky, fending off his attack.
Yi Tianyun immediately recalled all the Spirit Swords. He had only managed to reap the lives of a few people; the vast majority of his attack had been blocked by the Nether Dragon.
"Worthy of a Grandmaster-level formation. This must be the rather famous Nether Dragon Formation, I presume?" Yi Tianyun narrowed his eyes as he watched the Nether Dragon, a rough idea already forming in his mind.
