Chapter 511 - 510: Subdue
So many phoenixes were circling Yi Tianyun, ready for him to choose from, a sight that stunned everyone. They had assumed it would be a difficult trial, that winning a phoenix’s approval would require a great deal of effort.
Most candidates hoping to gain a phoenix’s approval had to demonstrate a set of Martial Arts or a similar skill, unleashing their power to attract one.
But Yi Tianyun simply had to stand there and release his Immortal Fire to draw most of the Phoenix Race to him. They were far too forward, not the least bit demure.
This made the elders of the Phoenix Race shake their heads, feeling these phoenixes were a disgrace. If only they were a bit more reserved. However, the Blue Phoenix’s arrogance restored a bit of their dignity.
"That’s the Blue Phoenix for you. Many have tried to win it over, but all have ended in failure," Bai Shuihuang said with a slight smile. The Blue Phoenix was incredibly proud; every candidate for Divine Envoy wanted it as their companion and mount.
But no matter what they tried, none could ever win the Blue Phoenix’s favor.
"Come with me. I can make you even stronger!" Yi Tianyun extended a hand toward the Blue Phoenix, beckoning it to follow him.
The Blue Phoenix lifted its head and glanced his way, its blue eyes filled with disdain. ’Anyone can make empty boasts.’ It didn’t believe for a second that Yi Tianyun could make it stronger.
Seeing Yi Tianyun get snubbed brought knowing smiles to the elders’ faces. While they held no ill will toward him—in fact, they were quite grateful—it was still amusing to see him put in his place. After all, if he obtained everything too easily, it would devalue the title of Divine Envoy.
This only applied to the Blue Phoenix, of course. If he had simply wanted to become a Divine Envoy, he could have done so the moment he arrived. With so many other phoenixes to choose from, how could he possibly fail?
"Quite the temper, aren’t you? What about this, then?" Yi Tianyun opened his palm, and the Immortal Fire flared up once more. The astonishing heat forced the other phoenixes that had drawn near to retreat.
Many of the phoenixes were drawn to Yi Tianyun not just for his character, but even more so for his Immortal Fire. If they cultivated to their peak, they too would have a chance to master the Immortal Fire, which was why they all wanted to follow him.
But even after he unleashed the Immortal Fire, the Blue Phoenix merely gave it a casual glance before showing no interest whatsoever. It lacked the yearning gaze of the other phoenixes.
"Haha, even the Immortal Fire is useless! How could the Blue Phoenix possibly be swayed by that? The Immortal Fire means nothing to it."
"That’s right. Who knows how long it will be before one of our own can finally claim the Blue Phoenix. It can’t just stay down there forever."
"It’s fine. At least now he knows that our phoenixes aren’t so easily won over."
The elders chuckled, pleased. They felt Yi Tianyun’s efforts were futile; the Blue Phoenix would not be swayed. Sometimes, raw power wasn’t enough to win a companion. Their Attributes had to be compatible for them to work together in perfect harmony.
"Looks like your father won’t be able to tame the Blue Phoenix this time. He’ll just have to settle for one of the others. No one has ever succeeded with that one," Bai Shuihuang said to Yan’Er with a knowing smile. She had actually thought Yi Tianyun might succeed before they arrived, but it seemed he had failed after all.
"Daddy won’t lose! Daddy, show them how amazing you are! Go get that big bird!" Yan’Er shouted from above, waving her little fists to cheer Yi Tianyun on.
Yi Tianyun turned to look at her and grinned. "No problem! Just watch, I’ll make it come over and give you a ride through the sky!"
The other elders shook their heads. ’Talk is cheap,’ they thought. ’It will only disappoint the child when he fails.’
Yi Tianyun turned back to the Blue Phoenix. "It seems the Immortal Fire doesn’t interest you," he said with a faint smile. "Then how about this?"
He opened his palm, and the Netherworld Fire erupted forth. A high-grade Earth Level Netherworld Fire. A wave of chilling energy immediately radiated outward, forcing many of the phoenixes to retreat, now too afraid to approach.
Under the influence of the Netherworld Fire, the surroundings were instantly frozen solid. Even the lava that was about to well up began to freeze into sculptures of ice under the extreme chill.
"KREEE!"
The Blue Phoenix let out a startled cry and shot up from its perch on the Fire Phoenix Tree. A pile of ice shards lay where it had been sitting. It was obvious now—it possessed the Ice Attribute, not the Fire Attribute!
Yi Tianyun’s use of the Netherworld Fire startled everyone. They had never imagined he could possess such a frigid, sinister flame.
To possess the Immortal Fire and also a cold, sinister flame... was that even possible? The answer was yes. The man standing before them, Yi Tianyun, was living proof, demonstrating that he commanded two different types of fire.
What was truly shocking was that one was yin and the other yang.
"Th-that’s the Netherworld Fire... He can control the Netherworld Fire too..."
"No way... To have the Immortal Fire and also control the Netherworld Fire... How is that possible..."
"I-Incredible... To control such a frigid flame... Could his possession of the Netherworld Fire be the reason he was able to extinguish the Celestial Yin Fire?"
The elders were all dumbstruck, stunned once again. Before, they were shocked by the forwardness of the phoenixes. Now, they were utterly aghast that he could control two opposing flames. This was far more shocking than what had come before, as the two were as incompatible as fire and water, yet they existed within a single person.
Most importantly, the Blue Phoenix took flight. It flew straight toward Yi Tianyun without the slightest hesitation, crying out excitedly at the sight of the Netherworld Fire. Then, with a FWOOSH, its own Netherworld Fire erupted from its body, instantly freezing the area around it.
Between the man and the beast, the sweltering volcano suddenly turned frigid, a testament to the astonishing chill of their Netherworld Fire.
"Are you willing to be my companion?" Yi Tianyun asked with a small smile. He had realized earlier that the Blue Phoenix was actually an Ice Phoenix, which was why the Immortal Fire had been useless.
’I was just testing to see if I could attract it,’ he thought. ’Looks like I had to use the Netherworld Fire in the end.’
There were very few in the Phoenix Race who possessed mutated flames. So it wasn’t that the Blue Phoenix was too proud, but that the other candidates were simply unsuitable. It would never follow someone incompatible.
If their Attributes were incompatible, their combat effectiveness would be severely limited. Naturally, it would prioritize finding a partner with matching Attributes.
However, most members of its race possessed the normal Phoenix Fire, which was completely incompatible with it, hence its constant refusals. Now that Yi Tianyun had revealed his Netherworld Fire, it excitedly revealed its own, showing they shared a common flame and could work together in perfect harmony!
"CHIRP! CHIRP!"
The Blue Phoenix cried out, its joyous sounds clearly indicating its agreement to become Yi Tianyun’s companion.
"Alright then. From this day forward, you are my companion!"
Yi Tianyun reached out and stroked its feathers with a smile. The taming had gone quite smoothly.
