Chapter 448/Shocking truth
Chapter 448
Julie’s POV
The revelation dropped like a massive boulder into a pool of stunned silence.
I took a step back in absolute shock, my hand reaching out to press against the cold back of an armchair for balance. My lips parted to force out a trembling, incredulous whisper. "How are you not Mirdreth?!"
Violet tilted her head, her fingers lightly smoothing the crease of her designer trousers with an unsettling chill. She drew a slow, composed breath before meeting my eyes. "Yes... I am not Mirdreth. I am Violet."
At that exact second, shattered fragments of an old memory rushed back into my mind the day Marcus told me about my mother’s long-lost twin sister who disappeared years ago. My eyes vibrated with confusion, my gaze darting frantically across her face as I stammered, "You’re... Aunt Violet?!"
Steve turned toward me, his hand halting mid-air, his face a blank wall of complete confusion. "Since when do we have an aunt who looks this identical to our mother?!" he blurted out, pointing a rigid finger at her.
"She’s her twin..." I murmured under my breath, my throat tight.
Steve’s features twisted in immediate anger. He rounded on her, taking a heavy step forward until the shadow of his large frame fell over her. "Did you trick us?!"
She gave an indifferent shrug, leaning back comfortably against the plush velvet cushions. "I didn’t trick anyone."
I took a few frantic steps toward her, my fists clenching until my knuckles turned stark white as the pressure tightened in my chest. "Why didn’t you tell us you were Violet from the very beginning?!" I demanded, my voice rising in desperation. "Why did you leave us standing there like idiots, thinking you were our mother?!"
Violet scrutinized both our stunned faces. The faint smirk vanished, replaced by a deadly serious look, completely devoid of sarcasm. She folded her hands in her lap and spoke with unwavering authority. "Because I am your mother."
Steve let out a dry, incredulous laugh, running a hand through his hair in utter frustration. "Is this a joke?!"
"Stop screwing around, Violet!" I yelled, my voice breaking under the weight of the nightmare unfolding around us.
Her firm, absolute reply froze the blood in our veins. "I am the one who gave birth to both of you. Not Mirdreth."
I snapped my gaze toward Steve. He stood paralyzed, like a man turned to stone, his breathing coming in shallow, heavy hitches before he finally erupted, his voice shaking the quiet room. "You are insane!"
Violet met his outburst without so much as a flinch, asserting with cold superiority, "I am your real mother."
A suffocating silence descended over the lavish villa. Steve and I stood there exchanging bewildered, terrified glances, as if we had tumbled into a deep abyss where denial offered zero escape.
Steve rasped out, rubbing the back of his neck as he desperately tried to push the reality away, "Julie... I told you it’s a prank!"
Violet leaned forward slightly, resting her elbows on her knees. Her eyes glittered with dark venom as she sneered, "Did the two of you never wonder why Mirdreth could never bring herself to love you?"
She turned her direct gaze toward Steve, watching him wince. "Did you never ask yourself why Stewart never treated you with a single shred of kindness?"
Then her piercing eyes locked onto me, striking me like a physical blow with the ultimate, crushing question. "Did you never ask yourself why your father sold you so easily?"
I froze where I stood, squeezing my eyes shut as raw pain tore through my chest. Yes... Those exact questions had haunted us in the pitch-black of night for as long as I could remember. We had spent our entire lives tormented by the dark secrets hiding behind the hell of our family. But I opened my eyes, staring at her in sheer disbelief. Was it truly possible that Stewart wasn’t our father after all?! Was Mirdreth nothing more than a giant lie, and this absolute stranger sitting casually before us was the actual source of our existence?!
"This is insane..." I whispered, shaking my head as I backed away another inch.
Steve closed the distance between them in two massive strides, his shadow looming over her as a throat-tearing roar burst from his lungs. "If you are our mother... where the hell were you all these years?! Why did you abandon us to suffer alone?!"
Violet looked up at him, entirely unbothered by his size or his rage. She answered with a provoking calm, adjusting the diamond bracelet on her wrist as if discussing the weather. "Because I don’t like small children... and because I was on my own, I couldn’t raise you."
My jaw dropped in sheer disbelief, my eyes widening to their limit. "You don’t like small children?!"
She offered a simple, indifferent nod, her lips set in a flat line. "Yes."
"And what do you mean you were on your own?!" I demanded, throwing my hands up as my tone screamed with outrage.
She waved her hand dismissively through the air, brushing my question aside like a minor inconvenience. "Why are we digging up the past now and wasting time?"
Steve let out a burning, sarcastic laugh, slapping his own forehead in utter shock. "We just found out you’re our mother, and you say we’re wasting time?!"
I stepped up beside Steve, my pride bleeding out with every passing second. "Do you honestly think you could abandon us, show up out of nowhere, and expect us to welcome you with open arms?!"
Violet slammed her palm onto the armrest, her voice cutting through the space with a stern, authoritative command that instantly silenced the room. "Didn’t you welcome me with open arms when you thought I was Mirdreth?!"
She stood up slowly, taking a step toward us as her eyes flashed with fierce intensity. "Isn’t Mirdreth the one who hated your guts?! Isn’t she the one who couldn’t embrace you a single time so much so that you stood there paralyzed when I hugged you today?!"
She gestured toward Steve’s broad shoulders. "Isn’t she the one who stood by and let that bastard Stewart beat you, Steve?!" She pointed a sharp nail directly at my chest. "Isn’t she the one who let Stewart sell Julie?!"
