Chapter 238: Do You Even Know the Value of Room and Board?
"You guys just need to follow instructions and build whatever the Lord wants."
"Of course, besides the basic benefit of survival, there are some other perks to working here." Feihu felt like he was acting as a big housekeeper, arranging all the follow-up matters for Jiang Che.
Jiang Che was taken aback. Perks? What perks?
He hadn’t even considered these things.
A bunch of people below wore the same confused look as him, only Jiang Che hid it well so no one noticed.
"There are perks too?"
"Just being able to live here is good enough for me. I don’t really need any perks."
"Now I finally get just how valuable ’room and board’ actually is!"
"Hahaha, free food and lodging is the biggest benefit in this era, you could even do without a salary!"
...
The word "perks" made everyone perk up like they’d been injected with adrenaline. None of the people who came here ever really expected any sort of benefit. What most of them worried about was whether Jiang Che would kick them out after the job was done.
As soon as they found out he wouldn’t, the weight in everyone’s heart was lifted.
"But it’s not just about free food and a place to sleep." Feihu chuckled in front.
"Besides work, you all have a chance to power-up."
"As long as you work hard, you can get stronger. So what do you guys think of this perk?"
"Later, everyone will be divided into groups and teams. Every month, based on team progress and construction quality, energy orbs will be distributed. All you need to do is absorb them and you’ll grow."
Jiang Che snapped back to attention. If he wasn’t wrong, what Feihu was talking about now was the "ticket" he’d planned to charge for using transport.
Earlier, both Feihu and Xiong Jie had asked him to leave behind the method of making this transport, open up public transport, and then collect fares.
Originally, he meant these energy orbs to be used by his own people so they could get stronger, but now Feihu was handing them out to all these people.
"Don’t doubt whether this is true or not. You can all see that there aren’t many strong people here—counting us, there are only three or four."
"Besides, we’ll definitely need to cultivate our own underlings, and once we’ve expanded our territory in the Dark Forest, we’ll send some strong folks out to garrison."
At this point, confusion flashed in people’s eyes, and someone murmured in puzzlement, "Isn’t it only thirteenth tier that can create a Dungeon, and even then you become the lord? Aren’t you afraid we’ll just betray you later?"
He believed Feihu’s words, since there really weren’t many people here. In other human Dungeons, whether opened by a 13th or 15th rank human, they all had at least some 12th rank powerhouses with them.
The Evil Spirit Dungeons also had tons of evil spirits. If a fight broke out, Jiang Che’s side would undoubtedly have the lowest combat power, so wanting to train up some experts made perfect sense.
But in human history, powerful nations have always had small vassal states nearby, and time after time, those little states end up overturning the tables.
Even they couldn’t promise that after opening a Dungeon themselves, they wouldn’t just want to go independent. Who knew if they’d still listen to Jiang Che by then?
After all, on your own territory, if another lord invades, you’re always at a disadvantage—not your home turf.
"That’s kind of true." Jiang Che caught onto Feihu’s point—Feihu also hoped he’d cultivate more subordinates.
"Like for newly explored territory, even someone at first tier can go garrison there."
"As long as the main Lord explores the land, his subordinates can garrison on that land, because technically, it’s still mine."
"But first tier is too weak. Any regular challenger could walk in and that lord would be done for."
"So anyone sent out has to be at least eighth tier. Not asking you to defend the Dungeon to the death or anything—if you really can’t hold out, just show the exit."
"First thing is, you guys need to stay alive."
As soon as Jiang Che finished, the people in front were breathing audibly harder.
None of this group had ever dreamed they could become a Lord in their whole life.
Becoming a Lord had all kinds of benefits. They grew faster than regular folks, because they could directly absorb the energy the Dungeon naturally took in, and use it to power up.
"But staying alive doesn’t mean you can open up the Dungeon without limits. Any newly explored area needs the Dungeon’s energy to keep running. If someone clears it, they’ll absorb your energy, and when the Dungeon runs out, for me it just means losing a small area, but for you, it could mean losing your life."
Jiang Che wasn’t trying to scare them.
Dungeons absorb energy daily, which splits four ways: one part for basic operation, one for storage, two parts for those managing the Dungeon, and the last part for the Lord at the top.
The Lord basically charges a kind of energy "rent" here.
"Got it, thanks for the explanation, Boss Jiang Che!" The ringleader lowered his head in a deep bow.
Looks like whatever Jiang Che builds in his Dungeon won’t affect them or threaten them in any way.
They could stay underground for now, and once they got stronger, ask Jiang Che to assign them to manage some other place.
Once you get your own place, won’t you be free to do whatever you want?
Now that they thought about it, Jiang Che had just the right amount of recruits—enough to keep construction going, and from time to time he could send people to garrison, with just enough energy orbs to go around.
"Looks like we’re just not as thorough as you, Boss. I was being petty." Someone from the back immediately dropped to one knee, eyes full of newfound loyalty to Jiang Che.
He’d even complained before—Jiang Che making them live underground, even when hiring laborers, you normally wouldn’t make them live down here.
But now, if they might go manage their own territory someday, there was really no reason to live up top. It’d just slow down construction anyway.
Jiang Che looked up, and at once raised his eyebrows.
There had been too many people before, so he’d been too lazy to check everyone’s strength.
This guy was actually twelfth tier!
He looked at Feihu and sent a voice message, "This guy is twelfth tier."
Feihu looked at the man in confusion, then shook her head at Jiang Che. She had no idea!
She was a low tier herself. Leng Feng just used whoever he had, throwing whoever into the cart and sending them over.
She’d really never expected a high-tier would sneak in.
Did Boss Leng even know about this?
There’s a twelfth tier human here now.
"Boss Leng knows. I used to work in design, so he sent me here on purpose." The man speaking seemed to have read Jiang Che’s confusion. At first, he thought he was just here to score points with Jiang Che, planning to finish the job and leave.
Now that he thought about it, it was way better to stay here than go back. Living underground? Fine with him!
Doesn’t anyone get how valuable room and board really is?!
