Chapter 299 - 298: You Can’t Expect Me to Call You Brother, Right?
The people in the car gradually woke up, their eyes first confused and hollow, as if their souls were still trapped in the horror they had just witnessed.
It was a long time before they began to recover, gasping for air in deep, ragged breaths, their bodies still shaking uncontrollably.
Xiong Jie watched everyone slowly regain consciousness, took a deep breath, and solemnly told them, "The passage is open. The Evil Spirit Lord has already entered this world."
Someone asked, their voice trembling, "All of them?"
Xiong Jie nodded with a grave expression and replied, "All of them."
The car instantly fell into a deathlike silence, fear and despair written across every face.
"Wh-what are we supposed to do now? Isn’t this the end of the world?" someone cried, their voice choking with tears.
"Yeah, where can we even hide?" another added in panic.
At that moment, everyone suddenly recalled the terrifying monster who had just turned and left, remembering how it was for Ding Ning’s sake.
That scene kept resurfacing in their minds, leaving them with conflicted emotions.
"We... we can still go back home..." someone stuttered, a hint of post-survival gratitude and uncertainty about the future in their voice.
"Yeah, we can still go back home..." the others echoed, filled with sighs and hope.
By "home", they meant returning to Jiang Che’s dungeon.
In their hearts, it had become the last haven.
The few who had been forced out were stunned when they heard this, but before they could speak, Xiong Jie cut them off.
"When we go back this time, I’ll ask for you." He sighed, his tone laced with helplessness and exhaustion.
He had never met other Lords before; now, after his first encounter, he realized just how terrifying they were.
The overwhelming oppression and chilling aura still made his heart race with lingering fear.
Everyone in the bus kept silent, lost in their own thoughts.
The bus rumbled along, finally arriving at the nearest territory.
The group looked on, puzzled, as some of them had visited more than once to pick up people, but this time the atmosphere was much more severe and cold, the air thick with murderous tension.
Outside the territory was a specially built gate, guarded by someone.
He was expressionless, his eyes tired.
Xiong Jie and the others got off the bus, lining up in front of the gate.
The guard carefully checked their identities before letting Xiong Jie and his group inside.
This was a human territory. Since Leng Feng ordered all territories to be divided, they now separated residential and dungeon raiding areas.
The surplus people were all sent to Leng Feng’s side.
Here, by contrast, things were streamlined and efficient, gathering a group of strong and loyal members.
When Xiong Jie arrived, the human Lord of this territory came over for the first time.
He had something to discuss with Xiong Jie; after all, previously only drivers and ordinary people came, but this was Xiong Jie’s first time here.
Xiong Jie was no longer the rich, overweight man he used to be. After much hardship, he’d slimmed down, his once bloated body now much sturdier, his eyes sharper, no longer confused or hesitant.
After swallowing many Energy Pearls, he was now a level nine Survivor.
His presence was calm and restrained. Following Jiang Che, he moved with an air of confidence.
The Lord of this territory was level thirteen.
Xiong Jie was a bit surprised to see him waiting inside.
Upon seeing Xiong Jie, the Lord’s face broke into a warm, enthusiastic smile. He strode over, greeting Xiong Jie politely. "Brother Xiong Jie, I’ve heard so much about you. Meeting you today, you’re truly remarkable!" His voice was loud and hearty.
"Brother Xiong Jie, since you’re rare to visit, I happen to have something to discuss with you. Please do me the honor and stay for a meal!" he said warmly, not showing any disdain for Xiong Jie being only a level nine Survivor.
Xiong Jie looked at the people he’d brought; he was hoping to settle them in, and after experiencing life and death together, he wondered if he could negotiate with Jiang Che later to get them a second chance.
Thinking of this, he accepted the offer and nodded, "Then I’ll gratefully accept, thank you for your hospitality, Lord."
"No need to call me ’Lord’—I just got lucky leveling to thirteen. Just call me Brother Guo!" Guo Xu laughed loudly. He was a bit younger than Xiong Jie, but certainly not young enough for Xiong Jie to call him ’Little Guo.’
After getting stronger, everyone was reinvigorated; Xiong Jie himself looked much younger now.
Xiong Jie told everyone to stay overnight, and those who had come with him didn’t mind staying a day longer.
Knowing that the face of Jiang Che, the 9th Dungeon Lord, worked, they felt more at ease than ever.
Before, who could survive in front of an Evil Spirit Lord?
Most people would have died before even meeting them.
At the dinner table, after several rounds of drinks, the atmosphere grew even friendlier.
Brother Guo downed a cup, his cheeks flushed, his eyes showing determination as he said, "Brother Xiong Jie, I have a favor to ask. Please take my wife and son away, let them settle in Jiang Che’s territory."
After he spoke, he tilted his head back, gulped down his wine, and slammed the cup on the table.
With another drink, his emotions grew heated. He continued, "The people inside the dungeon haven’t realized what’s changed outside, but since yesterday, I’ve felt something strange, something horrifying."
As he spoke, his heart raced, that oppressive feeling like invisible hands slowly tightening around his throat.
Like a dagger hanging overhead.
He had a suspicion—people had been saying the passage between humanity and the Evil Spirit Realm was about to open.
No one knew how long "about to" meant.
Thinking back, it must have been fully opened, and the evil spirits had crossed over.
"I just can’t stop worrying about them." His voice trembled, filled with deep concern.
Xiong Jie looked puzzled and asked, "Brother Guo, should I take your parents as well? I remember they’re still alive."
There were plenty of seats left in the car; he could take everyone Brother Guo mentioned.
Guo Xu shook his head, his face bitter and helpless, sipping his wine slowly.
"I told them, but they won’t leave." He kept repeating it, his eyes empty, "They said they’re just ordinary people, and the more dangerous it gets, the more they need to stay."
His voice grew hoarser, like a worn-out bellows struggling to work.
"Because if the people realize my family all fled, their trust in the territory would shatter, too." He sighed heavily.
