Chapter 192 - 0192 Lower Admissions
The elevator went down for too long.
B1 passed without a sound.
B2 made the floor hum under Caleb’s boots.
B3 smelled of bleach.
B4 made Rina’s tracker flash once and go dark.
Iharu’s hand moved to her elbow.
She reached back first.
B5 took the air out of the elevator until everyone breathed smaller.
Caleb kept his palms open at his sides. The silver wanted the walls. It wanted the cables above them. It wanted the useful answer of breaking anything that carried them deeper.
"Mine," he said.
The metal stayed metal.
Sam stood beside him with the Record tucked under one arm and both hands visible. He had wrapped the green cover in a gray hospital blanket from the truck, because the center had asked for a book and Sam had taken that personally.
"Blanket helps?" Caleb asked.
"It makes me feel rude."
"Then it helps."
Tali watched the floor lights. "Recommendation. No one steps out ahead of Sam unless the room requires violence."
Kikaru rolled one shoulder. "I can be required."
"I know."
Soma held his tablet against his chest. The screen had stopped updating at B3. "No signal. No cached map. No clock sync."
"Professional insult?" Sam asked.
"Personal attack."
The last button went dark.
B7 stayed lit.
The elevator opened into a waiting room.
That was worse than a lab.
Rows of plastic chairs sat in clean lines under old ceiling vents. A water dispenser stood in one corner with paper cups stacked beside it. The floor had been polished recently enough to catch their reflections in broken pieces. At the far wall, six admission windows waited behind thick glass.
Each window had a number.
Only one was lit.
WINDOW ONE.
Below it, a blue screen read:
CUSTODIAN FIRST.
Sam looked at it.
"No."
The screen refreshed.
CUSTODIAN FIRST.
"I said no with feeling."
Soma glanced at the ceiling corners. "No visible cameras."
"That has stopped mattering," Kikaru said.
Rina’s tracker clicked back on.
The green line pointed through Window One.
Her face went tight.
"He’s behind the glass."
Iharu stepped closer to her. "Close?"
"Not close enough."
Caleb felt the silver lean toward the window.
Glass. Frame. Lock. Weak seam near the bottom.
He closed his hand around nothing.
"Caleb," Sam said.
The name caught him.
"I know."
"Tell me anyway."
Caleb looked at the window. "The room is offering easy damage."
Tali’s pistol stayed low. "Recommendation. Declined."
"Accepted."
Sam walked to Window One.
No one liked letting him go first.
That was the point.
The room did not change until he reached the faded line on the floor. A drawer slid open under the glass. Inside lay a white form, a black pen, and a visitor badge with no name on it.
The badge read:
CUSTODIAN.
Sam picked it up and clipped it to his jacket upside down.
The screen paused.
Soma made a small noise. "I think you offended it."
"Good."
The speaker above the window clicked.
"Present original record for intake."
The voice was calm, female, and too clean to be alive.
Sam leaned toward the glass. "Review request."
"Present original record for intake."
"Custodian requests review."
The drawer nudged the form forward.
Sam looked down.
Caleb moved close enough to read over his shoulder without crowding him.
TRANSFER OF CUSTODY.
Under that:
All returned names shall be reconciled to central index for restoration eligibility.
Sam laughed once.
No humor came with it.
"Restoration eligibility," he said. "That is a pretty shirt for theft."
The speaker answered at once. "Central index can restore incomplete persons."
Rina inhaled through her teeth.
Iharu said her name.
She shook her head once and stayed on her feet.
Sam picked up the pen.
Caleb’s silver leaned toward the motion.
Write. Sign. Finish. Open.
"Mine," Caleb said, low.
His body waited.
Sam crossed out TRANSFER OF CUSTODY.
The pen tore paper.
Then he wrote beneath it:
CUSTODY DENIED.
REVIEW SEFA AMADI.
Attention moved through the room, cold and focused.
Every window lit at once.
Names appeared on the blue screens.
PASCO RELL.
DR. HALDEN VEY.
SEFA AMADI.
EMEKA OKONYE.
MAREK ALBRIGHT.
VOSS-07.
Then more names began to scroll.
Too many.
Some Caleb knew from the Record. Some he had only carried in the back of his skull since the yards. Some did not belong to him at all, old names with no dates, no families, no handwriting, only intake numbers and a status line.
HELD.
HELD.
HELD.
The room filled with paper sounds.
Drawers opened behind the windows. Printers woke under the counters. Thin white strips slid out with names printed in black.
Rina pressed both hands over the tracker.
"Stop," she said.
Caleb’s shoulders tightened.
The silver loved the word.
The printers jammed for half a second.
Sam snapped his head toward Caleb. "Caleb."
Caleb took the name like a handhold.
"Mine."
The printers resumed.
Rina looked sick. "I said it."
"It heard him wanting it," Sam said. "Not you."
Caleb hated that comfort because it helped.
Window Three flickered.
SEFA AMADI stayed on-screen while every other name moved.
The speaker changed voices.
The next breath came through rough.
"Tower?"
Iharu stepped to the glass so fast Tali shifted her stance.
"Still standing," Iharu said. "Still yours."
The screen under Sefa’s name changed.
CONDITION: DIVIDED.
Rina’s tracker buzzed until the cracked casing rattled.
She held it to her chest. "Sefa, can you hear me?"
The answer took time.
"Too many doors."
Caleb watched Sam’s hand tighten around the pen.
Sam had the original Record under his arm, the false transfer form under his palm, and six windows asking for all the names at once.
The center had built the room for surrender.
Sam used it for filing.
He drew a box around Sefa’s name.
"Review one case," Sam said. "Sefa Amadi. Custodian present. Original withheld. Copies distributed. No intake."
The speaker clicked.
"Incomplete review cannot proceed without central index."
"Then incomplete review can learn patience."
Tali’s mouth twitched.
Soma whispered, "That may be my favorite legal threat."
The room answered from the wall behind Window Three.
The glass stayed shut while a panel beside it slid aside.
A narrow service hall appeared behind the counter, lit by a line of floor lights that led away from the waiting room. At the end, something silver moved behind another pane.
Rina stepped forward.
Iharu caught her hand because she reached for him and because he had been waiting.
"He is there," she said.
"Part of him," Caleb said.
She looked at him.
He wished he had a softer answer.
"Enough to answer," he said.
That one she could use.
The speaker returned to the clean voice.
"Manual review granted. Custodian and vessel only."
Kikaru lifted her blade.
"No."
Tali’s answer came at the same time. "Denied."
The screen refreshed.
CUSTODIAN AND VESSEL ONLY.
Sam turned the visitor badge right side up.
Then he unclipped it and slid it through the drawer back to the room.
"Counteroffer," he said.
The drawer paused.
Sam took the copy packet from inside his jacket, Sefa’s page blank where the return line should have been, sealed in clear sleeve plastic and marked in Rina’s tight handwriting.
He slid it into the drawer.
"Custodian, vessel, and witness."
Rina went still.
The screen under Window Three flickered.
WITNESS UNREGISTERED.
Sam tapped the sleeve. "Registered now."
The room held the paper for three breaths.
Then the drawer shut.
MANUAL REVIEW AMENDED.
CUSTODIAN.
VESSEL.
WITNESS.
Kikaru looked at Rina. "That means you."
Rina swallowed.
Iharu still held her hand.
She looked at him.
He released her before she had to ask.
"Tower stands," he said.
Rina nodded, then stepped to Caleb and Sam.
The service hall lights brightened.
Behind the far pane, the silver shape moved again.
This time, the tracker speaker caught one thin line before static chewed it apart.
"Do not let them sort me."
Caleb looked at the hall.
The silver waited for an order.
He gave it a choice instead.
"We go to the witness."
