THE LAST stair was narrow enough for one person.

Of course it was.

Caleb stood at the top and looked down into white light.

Behind him, Sam shut the Record again, then opened it, then shut it. A nervous habit disguised as a tactical check.

"Say it," Tali said.

Caleb kept his eyes on the stair. "The room wants me alone."

"Recommendation," she said. "Declined."

The wall screen beside the stair answered:

FINAL CONSENT LEVEL.

VESSEL ENTRY ONLY.

WITNESSES MAY OBSERVE.

"Observe from where?" Soma asked.

The floor split around the stair and raised seven narrow panels of glass. Each panel held a reflection of one person on the team.

Sam.

Rina.

Iharu.

Kikaru.

Tali.

Soma.

Sefa.

At the safe house, the comm crackled, then cleared.

Hiro said, "It made a panel here too."

Soma checked his console. "Foundation witness and Hiro linked by copy. Iris line still outside. Eleven witness line above us."

"So everyone gets a window," Kikaru said.

"A witness box," Sam said.

The woman waited below, barely visible through the white.

"Witnesses comfort consent."

"Witnesses also catch lies," Rina said.

Caleb stepped onto the stair.

The first step took his weight and read his name.

REID.

The second read his silver.

SILVER SPREAD: 99 PERCENT.

The third read his status.

SECOND MIDDLE.

The fourth waited.

Caleb stopped before touching it.

"Body waits for me."

The silver in his mouth settled. It hated the command now. It wanted to be him faster than he could bear.

Sam’s reflection in the nearest panel put one hand against the glass.

"Still with you."

"I know."

"Know louder."

Caleb breathed.

"Still with me."

The fourth step lit.

SELF-COMMAND ACTIVE.

He descended.

The room at the bottom was small.

That was worse than the assembly chamber.

The crown ribs stayed above. The city map stayed above. The chair stayed above. This was a white room with a plain floor, one black line across the center, and a door painted on the far wall.

The painted door had blank paint where a handle should be.

The woman stood beside it.

"This is all?" Caleb asked.

"This is enough."

The witness panels formed a half-circle behind him. Each held one person watching from above, their reflections clear and trapped in glass that refused to become a cage.

Sefa leaned close to his panel.

"I dislike the room."

"Specific complaint?" Tali asked.

"It has the manners of a quiet contract."

The woman touched the painted door.

The black line on the floor woke.

FINAL CONSENT REQUIRES TRUE OFFER.

TRUE OFFER REQUIRES WANTED THING.

Caleb looked at the words.

His stomach went cold before the room changed.

Sam said, "Caleb."

The painted door opened inward.

Elara stood behind it.

Not a memory.

Not a projection the room admitted as false.

She wore her Defense Force coat with the collar buttoned wrong. Her hair was pulled back too tight. Her face was calm in that perfect smooth way Caleb hated more than pain.

Her eyes were wet.

The bridge had left the tears again.

Rina whispered, "Oh."

Kikaru’s blade scraped glass in his panel.

The woman stepped behind Elara and laid one hand on her shoulder.

Elara smiled at Caleb.

"Do I know you?"

Caleb’s body broke toward her.

One step.

The silver became light under his skin.

SILVER SPREAD: 99.4 PERCENT.

Sam hit the glass. "Caleb, line."

Caleb stopped with his boot over the black line and not across it.

The room hummed with disappointed hunger.

The woman bent near Elara’s ear.

"Tell him what you want."

Elara’s lips parted.

The leash spoke first.

"I want him to finish."

Caleb’s hands shook.

The center printed:

WANTED THING PRESENT.

LOVED CLAIM PRESENT.

CONSENT OFFER READY.

Sam said, "That is leash language."

"The leash is attached to a person," the woman said. "You keep forgetting that the cruel thing works because some part of it is true."

Elara blinked.

For half a second, fear moved under the calm.

Caleb saw the bridge.

Day seventeen.

Rain on the rail.

Her hand around his sleeve.

The first honest thing either of them had kept.

He could say the words again.

He could pull her up.

He could spend the last percent on the crack where the bar went in.

The room wanted that.

Of course it did.

Rina’s voice came through the panel. "Ask her."

Caleb swallowed metal.

"Elara."

Her eyes tracked to his face.

"The bridge. Day seventeen."

Tears ran down her face, but the smile stayed.

The woman tightened her hand on Elara’s shoulder.

"Do you want me to finish?" Caleb asked.

Elara’s mouth opened.

The leash said, "Yes."

Caleb held still.

"Do you want me?"

The smoothness cracked.

A breath came through that belonged to her.

"Caleb?"

The panels went quiet.

"I’m here," he said.

"Where am I?"

"Center."

Her eyes widened.

The woman leaned closer.

"Ask the last question," Sam said, voice raw.

Caleb did.

"Wanted direction?"

Elara trembled hard enough that the woman’s hand had to grip her coat.

The leash fought for her mouth.

Elara got one word through.

"Back."

The black line on the floor flickered.

TRUE WANTED DIRECTION DETECTED.

LOVED CLAIM CONFLICT.

The woman stopped smiling.

Caleb’s chest hurt.

"Back where?"

Elara’s eyes found his.

"Me."

The room shook once.

Sefa’s panel flashed green.

Rina said, "Claim belongs to her."

Sam wrote fast against the glass with his finger, as if the Record could feel him through it.

"Loved claim does not transfer custody."

The center fought back:

VESSEL MAY COMPLETE BY SAVING LOVED CLAIM.

CONSENT MAY BE GIVEN FOR RESCUE.

Caleb looked at Elara.

One percent left.

The cleanest offer in the world stood in front of him.

Take the last step. Open the host. Save her now.

Mercy as mechanism.

Again.

His whole body leaned.

The silver under his skin sang.

SILVER SPREAD: 99.8 PERCENT.

Tali’s voice cut through the hum.

"Recommendation. Define rescue."

Caleb dragged breath into lungs that felt made of wire.

Define rescue.

Marek’s lesson.

Listen before moving.

Caleb listened to Elara.

The true part wanted back to herself.

The leash wanted him finished.

The room wanted both counted as one.

He looked at the woman.

"You put the offer in the wrong mouth."

Her hand tightened.

Elara flinched.

Caleb’s silver surged.

He wanted to cross.

He wanted to tear the hand away.

He wanted the body big enough to make every leash in the world break at once.

The host behind the wall listened.

SILVER SPREAD: 99.9 PERCENT.

Sam’s voice broke. "Caleb."

Caleb closed his eyes.

Not to hide.

To find the line between rescue and taking.

He opened them.

"Elara chooses back to herself. I witness that."

The room held.

"I choose back to myself too."

The black line went dark.

For one impossible second, everything stopped climbing.

Caleb pointed at the painted door without crossing the line.

"That is the direction. Back. Not in. Not through. Back."

The witness panels flared.

Sam said, "Witnessed."

Rina said, "Witnessed."

Sefa said, "Witnessed."

Hiro’s voice came through the comm, hoarse. "Witnessed."

The eleven answered from above.

WITNESS.

The center screen split its own words apart.

LOVED CLAIM TRUE.

RESCUE DIRECTION: BACK.

HOST ACCESS DENIED BY DIRECTION.

The woman looked at Caleb as if he had struck her.

Then Elara screamed.

Not long.

One sound, torn free, fully hers.

The painted door slammed shut around her.

The room went white.

Caleb lunged and stopped at the dead black line with both hands open.

He had not crossed.

He hated himself for it.

He knew it had saved her from being used as the last key.

Both truths lived in the same breath and cut him differently.

The screen printed:

FINAL CONSENT WITHHELD.

HOST ACCESS DENIED.

VESSEL SELF-DIRECTION ACTIVE.

SILVER SPREAD: 100 PERCENT.

The number landed without sound.

Caleb remained Caleb.

The chair stayed empty above him.

He stood in the white room shaking, full of all of it, still himself by the width of a breath and every witness holding that breath with him.

The woman took her hand from the painted door.

Her face had gone empty.

"Then I will stop asking."

The witness panels cracked.

Above them, somewhere in the city, alarms began to wake.
