Chapter 196 - 0196 Original Harm
The room had twenty beds and no sheets.
Each bed had a number plate bolted to its foot.
V-01.
V-02.
V-03.
The numbers continued down both sides of the room until they reached V-20 near the clean light.
Only one bed had straps.
V-07.
Caleb saw it.
Sam saw it too and shut the Record against his chest.
"Nope," he said.
The woman in the chair smiled like she had practiced gentleness until it became another tool.
She looked younger than Iris and older than any living face Caleb trusted. Her hair was pinned at the back of her neck. Her hands rested in her lap. A white visitor badge hung from her blouse with no name printed on it.
The room speakers used her voice when she spoke.
"Caleb."
The silver answered before he did.
It wanted the chair.
It wanted the light.
It wanted every numbered bed folded small enough to fit inside a fist.
"Mine," Caleb said.
His hands stayed open.
Sam stepped half a pace ahead of him.
"Review subject is Sefa Amadi."
The woman turned her eyes to the Record.
"Samuel."
"No."
"You have your father’s mouth."
"And his paperwork."
The badge on her chest flickered.
ORIGINAL HARM ADMISSION.
Rina stood with Iharu at her side. She held the tracker as if Sefa could still hear through the dead plastic.
"He said not to let you apologize."
The woman lowered her head.
"I am sorry."
Every bed light turned blue.
APOLOGY OFFERED.
Rina’s face drained of color.
Sam opened Page Zero with one hand.
"Rejected."
The lights blinked.
APOLOGY OFFERED.
"Rejected harder."
Tali moved to Sam’s left. "Recommendation. Original harm admission requires action, subject, and responsible party."
Soma swallowed. "Nouns and verbs. No perfume."
The woman looked at him with mild interest.
"Perfume?"
"Sorrow used to hide a mechanism."
Her smile thinned.
Caleb liked Soma for that and hated that there was room to like anything.
The woman rose from the chair.
Kikaru’s blade cleared its sheath by an inch.
The room lights brightened above V-07.
"I tried to save what would have been lost," the woman said.
Sam slapped Page Zero against the Record.
"Motive. Rejected."
The screen beside the bed wrote:
MOTIVE STATEMENT LOGGED.
HARM ADMISSION INCOMPLETE.
The woman’s gaze moved to Caleb.
"You know what it costs to carry the lost."
"Wrong subject," Caleb said.
The silver liked the sharpness in his voice.
He softened nothing.
"Sefa Amadi."
The lights over V-07 pulsed.
The woman turned toward the strapped bed.
"Sefa was stable."
Rina made a small sound.
Iharu’s hand waited beside hers.
She took it.
Sam said, "Stable is not harm."
"His witness line held under rupture."
"Still not harm."
The woman looked at Sam then, and for a second the practiced gentleness cracked into irritation.
Good.
Caleb wanted the crack.
"I used his witness line to hold unsorted returns," she said.
The Record warmed under Sam’s palm.
The wall wrote:
HARM ADMISSION PARTIAL.
Rina stepped forward.
Iharu moved with her, not ahead of her.
"Say his name."
The woman looked at Rina as if seeing a clerk instead of a blade.
"Sefa Amadi."
The tracker clicked in Rina’s hand.
Static breathed once, then stopped.
"Again," Rina said.
"Sefa Amadi."
The wall added:
SUBJECT NAMED.
Tali’s eyes stayed on the timer that had returned above the door.
6:19.
6:18.
"Continue," she said.
The woman walked to V-07 and touched the metal footboard.
Kikaru’s blade came another inch free.
The woman removed her hand.
"I divided Sefa Amadi’s return into usable functions."
Sam’s voice cut in. "Translate."
"Voice. Witness. Light. Claim. Index. Anchor."
The six words appeared above the bed.
Rina shook her head once, hard.
"He is not a drawer."
"No," the woman said.
The bed lights flickered.
APOLOGY OFFERED.
Sam pointed at the screen. "Try that again and I start annotating."
The apology line vanished.
Soma whispered, "Threat level: marginalia."
"High," Sam said.
The woman looked toward the ceiling.
"I divided Sefa Amadi’s return into voice, witness, light, claim, index, and anchor. I placed those functions where the center could preserve names awaiting release."
The wall wrote faster now.
HARM ADMISSION PARTIAL.
RESPONSIBLE PARTY IDENTIFIED: I.
Caleb felt the room shift at that one word.
I.
The center hated it.
Page Zero loved it.
The Record warmed again.
Sam’s knuckles tightened around the cover.
"Where did you place his light?" Rina asked.
The woman closed her eyes.
Caleb heard Sefa’s warning in the pause.
Do not let her apologize.
"Answer," Caleb said.
The silver stayed behind the word.
The woman opened her eyes.
"I placed his light inside the first vessel remnant."
Rina’s hand flew to her mouth.
Iharu’s face went still.
Caleb saw the Child again under Cutter Lane, four marks lit, Sefa’s light behind its ribs.
Sam read the wall.
FIRST VESSEL REMNANT CONFIRMED.
"VOSS-07," he said.
The woman’s jaw tightened.
"Yes."
The Record printed a line across the inside cover in Marcus’s old ink.
LIGHT PLACEMENT ADMITTED.
The timer read 5:02.
The room changed.
The beds folded down into the floor one by one except V-07 and the woman’s chair. Under each bed, names had been written on the concrete in black marker. Too many to read. Too many to pretend they were data.
Rina stared at them.
"These are the people in him?"
"Some," the woman said.
Sam snapped, "Subject, verb, object."
The woman inhaled through her nose.
"I stored unsorted names in Sefa Amadi because his tower claim kept him from collapsing."
The wall wrote:
ORIGINAL HARM ADMISSION COMPLETE.
Then another line appeared below it.
APOLOGY MAY NOW BE ACCEPTED TO CLOSE REVIEW.
The woman turned to Caleb with wet eyes and no tears.
"I am sorry."
The silver moved.
Not toward her.
Toward the apology.
It wanted to take it, finish it, make the room stop hurting.
Caleb understood why Sefa had warned them.
An accepted apology would close the review with the harm named but owned by her sorrow. It would make release a gift from the person who had broken him.
Rina lifted the tracker.
"No."
Her voice shook hard enough to scrape.
Iharu’s hand closed around hers.
She kept speaking.
"Your apology does not close him."
The wall blinked.
APOLOGY PENDING.
Sam opened the Record to Sefa’s page.
"Custodian rejects closure by apology."
The wall flashed red.
CLOSURE REQUIRED.
Tali said, "Recommendation. Substitute claim response."
"Yes," Sam said.
He looked at Rina.
Rina looked at Iharu.
Iharu nodded once.
She faced the bed.
"Sefa Amadi is claimed by people who heard the harm and reject ownership by the one who caused it."
The Record warmed.
The tracker in her hand spoke with Sefa’s voice, small and bright with pain.
"Louder."
Rina laughed once, broken and fierce.
"You are claimed," she said.
Iharu added, "Tower stands."
Sam pressed Page Zero flat against the Record.
"Custodian witnessed."
Caleb looked at the woman.
She was still offering him sorrow like a cup.
He let it sit in her hands.
"No intake."
The wall changed.
CLOSURE BY APOLOGY DENIED.
CLAIM RESPONSE ACCEPTED.
SEFA AMADI RELEASE REVIEW ADVANCED.
Rina took one step toward V-07.
The straps unlocked.
Nothing appeared on the bed.
That was almost worse.
Then the floor beneath it opened, revealing a glass case sunk below the frame. Inside it, a strip of green light moved like breath through six separate rings.
Sefa’s voice came from the case.
"Do not pull."
Everyone froze.
The woman sat back in her chair.
Her practiced face looked tired now.
Caleb ignored the face and watched the rings.
The screen above the bed printed:
FINAL RELEASE REQUIRES VOLUNTARY REASSEMBLY.
VESSEL PROXIMITY REQUIRED.
Caleb felt the silver smile inside him.
Sam saw his hand twitch.
"Caleb."
The name caught.
The rings turned, slow and waiting.
Sefa spoke again.
"Ask me."
Caleb kept his hand open.
"Then we ask."
