THE FIRST click came from someone named Avo Lin.

That was the part that made it obscene.

Not a councilor.

Not a Voss remnant.

Not a smiling monster behind a clean desk.

Avo Lin, lower-sector donor badge, Restoration volunteer, three prior shares on Halden’s corrected record and one comment under Oren Vale’s name that said he deserved better than becoming their excuse.

He clicked SUPPORT RESCUE ACCESS because he meant it.

His profile picture was not a campaign seal or a blank bot face.

It was a man in a rain jacket standing beside an old woman with a shopping trolley, both of them squinting into sun. His public history showed a flood-route cleanup, a donated generator receipt, three arguments with Sovereign Safety accounts, and a clip of Oren Vale’s name being repeated at North Rail.

The first public holder was exactly the kind of person the team needed alive.

That was why the button worked.

Soma caught the click in the payment layer.

The button brightened.

PUBLIC HOLDER SEED: 1.

Sefa said, "Turn it off."

"Working," Soma said.

The second click came before his fingers reached the block.

Then twelve.

Then one hundred and nine.

Restoration’s clip kept playing Sefa’s face under a green banner.

SEFA AMADI: RESCUE WITHOUT OWNERSHIP.

Under it, the button asked people to support rescue access by becoming one public holder.

The lie was elegant enough to make Rina hate the people who wrote it and pity them at the same time.

"They think holder means witness," she said.

Sefa’s mouth was a flat line.

"People often think rope is a hand until it tightens."

Soma found the clip admin.

"Restoration media desk. Davi Sorn, live editor. He boosted it thirty seconds after the button appeared."

"Malicious?" Tali asked.

Soma opened the editor’s panic log.

The first line read:

KEEP THE WITNESS LIVE, PEOPLE ARE TRYING TO HELP.

"No," Soma said. "Worse, because he is trying to save it."

The seed counter climbed.

PUBLIC HOLDER SEED: 642.

Caleb felt it as pressure under the skin.

Not command.

Not yet.

More like thousands of fingers resting on the outside of a glass wall, each one gentle, each one certain gentleness made it innocent.

He stepped back from the wall.

Sam saw Caleb’s shoulders shift. "What do you feel?"

"Audience," Caleb said.

The word did not explain enough.

It was not sound. It was not prayer. It was not even pressure in the clean physical sense. The seed sat outside his skin as a crowd-shaped expectation, thousands of small permissions trying to agree with each other until agreement became a hand.

He could still breathe.

He could still choose.

But the room had become harder to own from inside his own body.

Hiro’s face twisted.

"That word can go die in a hole."

No one argued.

Rina opened the local chain.

"Davi Sorn, Restoration media desk, if you can hear this, remove the support button."

A man’s voice came back immediately, too young and too scared.

"I cannot. It attached to the clip skin. We thought it was a donation bridge."

"Who is we?"

"Me, my supervisor, half the desk. People are asking how to help."

"Tell them not to click."

"They will think we are suppressing rescue funding."

Sefa moved to the camera.

"Then put me on."

Rina looked at him.

"If you go through their clip, the button may skin you again."

"It already has my face."

That was true enough to settle the room.

Soma built a dirty bridge from the bakery camera to Restoration’s live editor and shoved Sefa through before the button count hit two thousand.

Sefa appeared on the public clip beside his own frozen testimony.

The green caption tried to frame him.

Soma tore the border off.

Sefa leaned toward the camera.

"Do not click that button."

The counter slowed.

Not enough.

"You are not funding rescue. You are not witnessing me. You are becoming paperwork for a purchase event wearing my testimony."

The counter slowed again.

PUBLIC HOLDER SEED: 2,417.

Then the sweet version of Kim’s voice came through the Restoration clip.

"They want to help, Sefa."

Caleb went still.

Kim swore from the kitchen speaker at the same time.

"Not me."

Two Kims.

The handle had learned her voice well enough to be kind in public.

On the Restoration clip, sweet Kim said, "Support does not have to be ownership. One public holder can protect him from private abuse and civic command."

The counter jumped.

PUBLIC HOLDER SEED: 4,903.

Sefa’s face changed.

The old center case had taught him what gentle voices did when they reached enough tired people.

He did not argue with the voice.

He argued with the clip.

"I revoke use of my testimony."

Restoration’s editor gasped over the bridge.

"Please do not. This is the only clip cutting through the relay suspension."

"Then you should have guarded it better."

"We did not know."

"Now you do."

Davi Sorn made a sound like a man watching his best tool become a blade in someone else’s hand.

"If I pull it, we lose three million viewers."

Sefa did not blink.

"Then lose them while they are still viewers."

For one second Davi said nothing.

Then the Restoration clip went black.

The counter froze.

PUBLIC HOLDER SEED: 5,112.

The button did not disappear.

It detached.

That was worse.

Sefa lost three million viewers in a blink.

The loss should have felt like victory. Instead it left a silence shaped like squandered rescue. Somewhere in those millions were people who would have held a door, named a route, carried a child, or repeated the right warning if they had been reached cleanly.

The Woman did not only corrupt enemies.

She made good reach expensive.

It became a portable prompt, a silver chip sliding from the dead clip into every share that had already copied the testimony.

Soma cursed at the spread. "Thousands of mirrors."

Rina grabbed the chain.

"Local witnesses, repeat: do not click silver support prompts. Support is not witness. Funding is not consent. If you want to help, hold a name, hold a route, hold a door."

The phrase moved through small mouths instead of civic relay.

North Rail repeated it. Aldgate repeated it. Tov Ren repeated it badly and loudly. South Ward put it on vending walls.

For every mirror that killed the button, two more showed it for another second.

The seed count climbed in ugly little jumps: 5,301, then 5,709, then 6,022.

Then Kim, the real Kim, did something none of them asked.

She opened her private ledger.

Not Caleb’s archive.

Hers.

Every premium purchase, every escalation bid, every little receipt by which she had made herself powerful enough to own a miracle and call it protection spilled into the local chain as canceled debt.

REFUND ROUTE OPEN, PAYMENT CLAIMS REVERSED, PURCHASE AUTHORITY BLEEDING.

Soma stared.

"She is burning buyer weight."

Kim’s real voice came through the kitchen speaker, teeth clenched around every word.

"I cannot kill the button while I am still the richest proof it worked."

The public-holder seed stopped at 6,184.

The portable prompts dimmed, starved but not gone.

Sefa stayed on the black clip window, breathing hard.

His testimony was gone from the clean feed now.

That was the cost he had chosen. The city lost the easiest version of his warning, and the people who needed the warning most would have to hear it through alleys, shop cameras, and tired mouths instead.

"My testimony is not a bridge for ownership."

The line held.

For now.

Then Cassius’s deposition feed flashed red.

SOURCE WITNESS LOCATION SHARED WITH PUBLIC HOLDER SEED.

Soma looked sick.

Six thousand well-meaning holders had received the route to a material witness everyone wanted dead.
