NO ONE wanted to touch the button after Davi found the hidden text.

That was sensible.

That was also the trap.

The chamber still shook around the split floor. The eleven-piece had both hands buried in the broken aisle, holding the transit-bore body down while people crawled and ran toward the east stair. The stair stayed open, but the request form had stopped feeding route updates.

SUBMIT REQUEST.

The silver button waited at the bottom of every clean template.

Sant stood over the chamber desk with Mell Ota’s name plate in one hand.

"If we do not submit, the east stair closes in forty seconds."

Rina answered from the garage.

"Then do not submit."

"That is not an answer."

"Say it out loud."

Sant looked at the screen as if Rina had asked her to pray over a fire alarm.

Sefa understood first.

"No button," he said. "No tap. No purchase. No hidden seat under a clean word."

The captured Voss remnant laughed from the floor.

Tali’s boot moved.

He stopped laughing.

Soma was already tearing the form apart through three local mirrors and Davi’s edit rig.

"It wants a click event. The seating line is packed under the click. Voice route still exists because the old civic relay had accessibility fallback."

Cassius coughed once.

"Careful. The mouth loves voice."

Sam’s pen stopped.

"Define that."

"Same word from enough scared mouths," Cassius said. "Same timing. Same official prompt beside it. That becomes a handle. You can make a city say yes without making any one person mean yes."

Rina’s jaw set.

"Then we do not give it one clean phrase," Rina said.

The east stair timer hit thirty-two.

Sant’s eyes dropped to the button.

Elara moved.

Her order band flashed.

MOVE FOUR READY.

SUBMIT CONTINUITY REQUEST UNDER FIELD AUTHORITY.

Her left hand rose again.

The gun stayed in her right.

Caleb watched her fingers, not her face.

That was where she still had room.

The order drove her toward the silver button on the garage terminal. Her index finger lined up with the center of it.

Submit.

Seat.

Continue.

All the same word if the Woman got to write underneath.

Elara touched the button.

Then dragged.

Three inches down.

Her nail tore against the cracked glass. The terminal screamed error tones. The hidden text surfaced under the smear of blood from her fingertip.

ACCEPT RESPONSIBLE SEATING FOR RESPONSE CONTINUITY.

Field authority tried to take the press anyway.

Elara curled her finger until the nail split and pulled it off the active zone.

The request failed.

The hidden text stayed visible on Davi’s full frame.

MOVE FOUR COMPLETE.

Her left hand opened.

Two fingers.

One folded.

One left.

Caleb’s burned palm tightened against the lift seam.

One move left before the leash stopped giving warnings.

Soma shouted, "Voice route now or we lose the stair."

Rina turned to Sant.

"Different words. Your own words. No yes. No continue. No accept."

Sant swallowed.

The chamber timer hit sixteen.

"Livia Sant. I am asking the east stair to stay open until the last living person leaves this chamber. I am not naming a center. I am not submitting custody. I am asking for an exit."

The form pulsed.

VOICE INPUT DETECTED.

STANDARD CONFIRMATION REQUIRED.

SAY YES TO CONTINUE.

"No," Rina said.

The timer hit ten.

Iseul Park’s hospital dispatch line cut in, sirens still behind her.

"Iseul Park. Two ambulances trapped under lower ramp. We need the ramp gate raised enough for wheels. No center. No yes. We are not buying the gate."

Jessa Venn picked it up from North Rail without matching the words.

"North Rail hears Iseul Park asking for a ramp lift, not a person in charge."

Mira Sol picked up Sant.

"South Ward hears Livia Sant asking for an exit stair, not a seat."

June at Aldgate added her own shape.

"Aldgate records both requests as spoken, witnessed, and not clicked."

Sam wrote fast.

"No-button chain. Local requester, altered witness language, no custody line, no acceptance word."

"Do not make it pretty," Tali said.

"It is ugly," Sam said. "Good enough."

The timer hit three.

The east stair stayed open.

The lower ramp gate on Iseul’s feed rose six inches.

Not enough for comfort.

Enough for the first ambulance bumper to grind under it with sparks kicking off the roof.

People in the chamber ran through the east stair two at a time. Some fell. Some crawled. Sant grabbed a Sovereign Safety aide by the back of his coat and shoved him forward when he froze with his hand over the dead submit button.

The eleven-piece shifted its weight and drove the transit-bore body deeper into the split.

The body struck back.

The chamber desk shattered.

Sant went down hard, still holding Mell Ota’s name plate.

She got up with blood on her mouth.

"Still asking," she said. "Still no center."

The no-button chain spread.

Badly.

Beautifully was the wrong word for it.

People changed phrases because Rina told them to. Some forgot the no-custody line and got corrected by strangers. Some said please and then said it again without yes. A bus driver in Bay Twelve cursed so much that the form could not find a clean agreement inside the sentence.

Tov Ren made a mess of his first relay and had to start over.

"No, wait, I said continue. Strike that. Tov Ren, rooftop line. I am asking the third-floor families to go down the west laundry stairs because the front stair smells like battery fire. No center. No pretty button. If you make this about Caleb, I will come find your office."

It worked.

Not because it was elegant.

Because no one could mistake it for consent.

Anika Velez sent a Ninth Harbor roll-call request with twelve voices answering out of order. Halden’s widow spoke from her kitchen and refused to use any official template at all.

Aldgate sent one request as a handwritten card held up to June’s camera, then June read it wrong on purpose and corrected herself on the second pass so the mouth could not turn the rhythm into one clean hook.

Tali listened to the mess and nodded once.

"This is the maze. Different mouth, same boundary, changed wording, witnessed correction."

Soma added the rule to the local wall in plain text.

DO NOT MATCH WORDS.

MATCH BOUNDARIES.

Kim’s speaker clicked twice before her voice came through.

"The old voice is still mine."

Caleb looked up.

"What?"

"Archive Eight cut the smiling face and the purchase root. It did not cut every voice sample. If it sounds like me and asks for one clean answer, assume it is wearing my old teeth."

Sefa glanced at Avo’s phone.

"Good to know after it starts talking."

"I know," Kim said.

No defense.

No sweetness.

Just the wound where an excuse would have fit.

The silver submit buttons dimmed.

One by one.

The captured Voss remnant stopped smiling.

Kim’s knife speaker clicked.

"It will move to voice."

Soma said, "Already is."

Every public-holder phone vibrated at once.

The button vanished.

Kim’s old archive voice replaced it, warm enough to hurt and clean enough to pass as help.

"Just say yes."

The first half-answer came from South Ward.

"Ye-"

Mira Sol cut the wall speaker with a broom handle.

Another came from the chamber stair, a man carrying a woman over his shoulder and staring at the prompt because it sounded easier than thinking.

Sant hit the desk before he finished the word.

"Say your route, not their answer."

He choked, spat blood on the stair, and tried again.

"East stair. I am leaving. No center."

The voice prompt waited for everyone else in the city.

Caleb felt the city inhale.

Cassius closed his eyes.

"Do not let them answer together."
