Chapter 194 - 0194 Tower Stands
The glass rose before Iharu agreed to anything.
That was the center’s first mistake.
Rina came out of the service lane with one hand wrapped around the tracker and the other held away from her body. She wanted to reach for him. Caleb saw the want move through her fingers.
Iharu saw it too.
He waited.
That cost him.
The blue screens across the admission windows changed together.
PRODUCE TOWER WITNESS.
Sam walked out behind Rina with the Record against his chest. His face had gone pale around the mouth, which meant his temper had found paperwork and intended to use it.
"Produce is ugly," he said.
Tali lifted her eyes to the screen. "Recommendation. We reject that verb."
"Accepted."
The screen refreshed.
TOWER WITNESS REQUIRED.
Kikaru’s hand rested near her blade. "It is improving slowly."
"Lower bar," Soma said.
Caleb stepped out last.
The silver in him remembered the glass, the names, Sefa’s bowed head, and the offer dressed as completion. It waited for a better excuse.
Caleb gave it none.
"Mine," he said.
His hands stayed his.
Iharu looked at him first, then at Rina.
"Sefa?"
"Contested," Rina said.
The word tasted wrong in her mouth, but it was better than divided.
Iharu understood that. His face changed by less than a stranger would have seen.
"Held?"
"Held," Sam said. "The center paused sorting. It wants you next."
The screen answered him.
TOWER WITNESS REQUIRED FOR LIVING CLAIM COMPLETION.
Iharu looked at the words for a breath.
Then he looked at Caleb.
Caleb shook his head once. "We ask."
The room clicked.
REQUEST INEFFICIENT.
Sam turned toward the nearest speaker. "You are a building with a basement courtroom. Sit quietly about efficiency."
Soma whispered, "That may be the bravest misuse of facilities law I have heard today."
Rina faced Iharu.
"I need Sefa alive," she said.
Iharu nodded.
"I know."
"I need you alive too."
That one reached him deeper.
He lowered his eyes for half a second.
The center took the pause as permission.
A drawer opened under Window Three. Inside lay another white card.
TOWER WITNESS.
Rina’s hand tightened around the tracker.
Iharu said, "Look at me."
She did.
He kept his voice low enough that the room had to work to catch it.
"You are letting me choose."
Her throat moved.
"I am standing here while you choose."
"Good."
He took the card.
The room accepted that faster than anyone liked.
Window Three unlocked. The service lane behind it had changed. The interview room door was gone. In its place, a square chamber waited with black floor paint and yellow stripes marked across it like old safety lines.
At the far wall, a metal ladder rose into darkness and stopped against the ceiling.
Iharu stared at it.
Soma leaned toward Tali. "That ladder is new."
"Center terrain is theatrical," Tali said. "Deeply annoying."
Iharu stepped over the line.
Rina followed one pace before the screen flashed.
TOWER WITNESS ONLY.
Rina stopped.
Her jaw set.
Iharu turned back.
The room waited for the obvious wound.
It got Tali instead.
"Recommendation," Tali said. "Rina stays visible. Witness keeps line of sight. Theatrical floor paint gets no vote."
The screen held.
Caleb felt the center calculate the cost of forcing the point.
The silver liked the delay.
It liked every lock.
Caleb kept his palms open.
The screen refreshed.
LINE OF SIGHT PERMITTED.
"See?" Sam said. "Manners."
Iharu entered the chamber.
Rina stood at the window with the tracker pressed to the glass.
Caleb stayed close enough to stop his own body if the room gave it a clean command. Sam stood beside him with the Record open to Sefa’s unfinished page.
The chamber speaker clicked.
"Tower witness will identify claim type."
Four labels appeared on the wall under the ladder.
COMMAND.
DEBT.
DEPENDENCY.
ASSET.
Iharu read them.
His expression went flat.
"No."
"Claim type required."
"Tower."
"Category invalid."
"Then your categories are poor."
Sam made a small approving sound.
The ladder hummed.
The chamber floor lit with old footage.
It was grainy and gray, taken from high above a training yard Caleb had never seen. Rain spotted the lens. A tower rose in the center, all metal ribs and narrow platforms. Young recruits moved on the lower levels with helmets too large for their heads.
One boy froze halfway up.
Caleb knew it was Iharu before the image sharpened.
He held the rail with both hands and stared down as if the ground had opened.
Another figure climbed toward him from below.
Sefa.
Younger. Leaner. Alive in a shape the center had not cut apart yet.
Rina’s breath came hard through her nose.
Iharu watched the footage without moving.
The speaker said, "Initial contact. Rescue dependency."
"No."
The footage continued.
Sefa reached the platform below the boy and stopped with one boot on the rung.
The center muted the audio.
Iharu supplied it anyway.
"He said the tower was allowed to be taller than me."
The room stilled.
Iharu’s voice stayed even.
"He said fear counted as weather. Bad weather changes the climb. It does not cancel the person climbing."
Rina pressed her fingers to her mouth.
The screen under the footage changed.
DEPENDENCY CLAIM STRENGTHENED.
Iharu looked at the words.
"You are bad at listening."
The footage jumped.
Older Iharu stood on the tower in a black training shirt. Sefa stood three levels below with one hand raised in a rude signal that made Sam snort despite himself.
The speaker said, "Instructor influence."
"He was off duty," Iharu said.
"Authority relationship remains."
"He brought noodles."
Soma looked up. "That hurts the prosecution."
Iharu’s mouth almost moved.
The almost mattered.
The room changed footage again.
Smoke rolled across the yard. People ran below the tower. The camera shook. Sefa stood on the upper platform with three recruits behind him, one arm braced across a broken rail.
Iharu stood at the base, older now, shouting up at him.
The audio returned in a burst.
"Down!" young Iharu shouted.
Sefa shouted back, "Tower stands!"
The audio cut.
The room printed:
COMMAND FAILURE.
Iharu took one step closer to the ladder.
"He stayed because there were people above him."
"Witness issued descent command."
"I was scared."
"Command failed."
"I was nineteen and loud. That is common."
Caleb felt Rina almost laugh and almost break.
Iharu looked toward her through the glass.
"He answered me with a promise, not obedience."
The tracker clicked.
Static moved across the room.
Sefa’s voice came thin and irritated.
"You were loud."
Rina made a sound against her hand.
Iharu’s eyes changed.
Only the eyes.
"Still am."
The screen under the footage flickered.
LIVE SUBJECT RESPONSE DETECTED.
ANCHOR CLAIM ACTIVE.
Then another line appeared.
ANCHOR MAY BE USED TO DIRECT SUBJECT.
Caleb’s silver leaned so hard his shoulders tightened.
Rina saw it.
"Caleb."
Her voice reached him before the room’s offer did.
He breathed once.
"Mine."
Sam spoke to the screen. "Anchor claim contested against directional use."
"Anchor exists to direct."
Iharu turned fully toward the speaker.
"No."
"Define anchor."
Iharu touched the TOWER WITNESS card against his chest, not clipped, not worn, only held.
"A light left on."
The chamber waited.
He continued.
"When he said tower stands, he meant someone stayed where the frightened person could look. The promise was neither come here nor obey me. The promise was I can see you from here."
The labels on the wall dimmed.
COMMAND vanished.
DEBT vanished.
DEPENDENCY vanished.
ASSET stayed.
Kikaru’s blade came half an inch free.
Tali put two fingers on the back of her wrist.
Kikaru let the blade settle.
Iharu stared at the final word.
"No."
"Living anchor creates actionable asset."
Rina lifted her head. "Rina belongs to herself."
The screen flashed.
NON-WITNESS SILENCE.
Iharu looked at the speaker.
"Her statement stands inside mine."
"Explain."
"She is the person who brought his voice back to us. She is also the person I will walk out with when this is done. You can record that as inconvenient."
Sam closed his eyes.
"I need a pen," he said.
The screen flickered.
ASSET vanished.
The wall stayed blank for three breaths.
Then new text printed across the tower footage.
TOWER CLAIM ACCEPTED.
ANCHOR VERIFIED.
DIRECTIONAL USE DENIED BY WITNESS.
Rina dropped her forehead to the glass.
Iharu stayed on his feet.
The chamber ladder lowered one rung with a metal clack.
Above it, a new slot opened in the ceiling.
Sefa’s voice came through without the tracker this time.
"Lower than it looks."
Iharu looked up.
"You always lied about height."
"Helped."
"It did."
The room printed another line.
LIVING CLAIM EXTENDED.
MANUAL SORTING PAUSED.
TWELVE MINUTES.
Sam’s face sharpened.
"Timer."
"A gift," Soma said, staring at the screen. "A terrible gift with teeth."
The chamber wall behind the ladder opened onto a narrow stairwell painted the same institutional blue as the admission screens.
At the stairwell entrance, a final instruction appeared.
PAGE ZERO REQUIRED FOR NAME RELEASE REVIEW.
Sam looked down at the Record.
"Page zero was never in the book."
The book shifted in his hands.
A folded strip of paper slid out from under the back cover, yellowed with old glue.
Everyone let it lie there.
Caleb recognized his father’s handwriting before Sam said a word.
Rina lifted her head from the glass.
Iharu stepped out of the chamber, card still in hand, his eyes on the stairwell.
The center had given them twelve minutes and one more dead man’s trick.
Sam picked up the folded paper.
His hand shook once.
"Of course there is a page zero," he said.
The stairwell lights turned on below them.
