The center tried to swallow the claim.

Mina Cho’s name flickered on Rina’s tracker, green to white, white to green, as if something had taken it between teeth and failed to bite through.

PUBLIC MEMORY CLAIM INITIATED.

EXTERNAL RESPONSE REQUIRED.

The screen above V-07 added a third line.

CONTAINMENT FILTER ACTIVE.

Soma made an ugly sound.

"That is how cowards spell panic."

The woman in the chair looked at him.

"Containment protects unverified persons."

Sam lifted the Record. "Mina verified herself."

"Internal verification cannot create external standing."

"Watch us."

Page Zero warmed under his hand.

Caleb felt Sefa’s light ring tighten around his wrist.

The silver under his skin leaned toward the tracker, toward the claim, toward the invisible route leaving the room.

Route.

He held that word carefully.

"No intake," Caleb said.

The ring stayed outside his skin.

Tali took one step to the side, putting herself where she could see the woman, the screen, and Rina’s hands.

"Recommendation. Keep the claim narrow. One name, one detail, one external answer."

"Accepted," Sam said.

Rina held the tracker flat on her palm.

"Mina, can you still hear me?"

The speaker crackled.

"I hear your hand."

Rina’s face twisted, almost a smile and almost pain.

"Good. Stay with the claim."

"Trying."

The tracker pulsed again.

Soma crouched close without touching it.

"My tablet is irrelevant. It is using her claim and the Record copy network."

Sam looked up. "Which copy?"

The tracker answered before Soma could guess.

SAFE HOUSE COPY RESPONDING.

Hiro’s voice came through thin and annoyed.

"Someone explain why Sam’s dead-person book just grew a receipt."

Rina covered her mouth.

Sam closed his eyes.

"Hiro."

"That sounded guilty. Am I bleeding into a legal event?"

Tali’s shoulders lowered by one inch.

"Hiro, status."

"Horizontal. Irritated. Supervised by the polite statue."

The woman in the chair leaned forward.

The center screen flashed.

EXTERNAL RESPONSE UNAUTHORIZED.

Kikaru looked at her. "You seem bothered."

"The safe house copy was outside review scope."

"It is a copy," Sam said. "Copies are rude."

Hiro’s voice sharpened. "What name?"

Rina looked at the strip in her hand.

"Mina Cho."

The tracker carried a small hiss of static, then Hiro breathing through pain.

"I have the page."

Soma whispered, "He should not be moving."

Tali kept her eyes on the woman. "He will anyway."

Hiro breathed through his teeth.

"The statue is helping."

Caleb’s wrist tightened under Sefa’s light.

"How?"

"It put the VOSS-07 sleeve beside Mina’s page. Like a witness table."

Sam looked at the Record.

The page stayed blank for two seconds.

Then Marcus’s ink wrote:

RETURNED CHOICE MAY WITNESS PUBLIC CLAIM.

The woman in the chair folded her hands tighter.

Kikaru noticed that too.

"More dislike," she said. "Good room behavior."

Hiro spoke again.

"Mina Cho. Admitted as overflow. Released to memory claim. Hair cut crooked. Left side short. Brave."

The floor under V-12 flashed once.

Mina’s voice came through the room speaker.

"You read it."

Hiro answered, softer now.

"I did."

"Do you know me?"

The question cut all the clever out of the room.

Hiro took time.

Nobody filled it.

"No," he said. "I know your name now. I know your mother tried to fix your hair and made it worse. I know you called it brave. I can keep that."

The tracker screen wrote:

EXTERNAL MEMORY RESPONSE RECEIVED.

The center screen fought it.

NON-FAMILY RESPONSE.

PUBLIC MEMORY INSUFFICIENT.

Page Zero warmed.

Sam read the line as Marcus’s ink formed under his thumb.

"Public means a person may be remembered by witness, not ownership."

He looked at the wall.

"Witness, not family."

The center held the warning in red.

NON-FAMILY RESPONSE.

Rina lifted Mina’s strip.

"Mina, do you accept Hiro’s witness?"

Mina breathed through the speaker.

"Yes."

The red warning cracked into separate letters and went dark.

The tracker printed:

PUBLIC MEMORY CLAIM VALIDATED.

MINA CHO RELEASED TO EXTERNAL WITNESS.

Under V-07, the index ring turned easier again.

The change was small.

It was real.

Sefa made a sound from the case.

"Good."

Hiro heard him.

"Was that Sefa?"

Rina pressed the tracker closer.

"Yes."

"Tell him he sounds terrible."

Sefa answered before Rina could.

"You sound horizontal."

Hiro laughed once and paid for it.

The room lacked a category for that sound.

For half a breath, neither did Caleb.

Then the wall above V-07 printed:

RELEASE REVIEW EXTENDED.

PUBLIC MEMORY QUEUE AVAILABLE.

Mina’s name vanished from the floor.

Rina stared at the empty place.

"She is out?"

Sam checked the Record.

Mina’s new page had changed.

The line HELD had been crossed out by Marcus’s ink.

Below it:

REMEMBERED OUTSIDE CENTER.

Hiro said, "Her page is here too."

Soma’s head lifted.

"At the safe house?"

"Yes. It copied itself under the VOSS-07 sleeve. The statue is staring at it like it wants to file a complaint."

Caleb looked at his light ring.

VOSS-07.

The first failed vessel’s page, the kneeling statue, and Mina’s new page sharing the same table at the safe house.

The center had hated copies because copies made rooms outside its reach.

The woman stood again.

Kikaru raised her blade enough to make the point clear.

The woman stopped again, but this time her eyes stayed on Caleb.

"You are making an uncontrolled archive."

Caleb said, "No."

Sam’s mouth twitched.

Caleb continued, "We are making witnesses."

Page Zero warmed as if agreeing.

The center screen shifted.

UNCONTROLLED PUBLIC MEMORY MAY DESTABILIZE INDEX.

Tali read it aloud in a flat voice. "The center dislikes public witness because it destabilizes held inventory."

"I dislike how right you sound," Soma said.

"Professional burden."

The index ring stayed at the bottom of Sefa’s case, still crowded.

More floor names brightened.

Not all.

Five.

Then seven.

Then twelve.

Sam held up a hand. "Small stays small."

The lights froze.

Twelve names stayed green.

Sefa spoke through the case.

"Too many for Caleb."

Caleb’s wrist burned.

He swallowed the silver’s answer before it could become movement.

"One at a time."

The wall printed:

PUBLIC MEMORY QUEUE LIMIT REQUIRED.

Tali nodded once. "There. A rule we can use."

Soma tapped his tablet again, more from habit than hope. "The tracker is still our only route."

Hiro’s voice cut in. "I can read another."

Tali said, "No."

"Rude."

"You are injured."

"Still literate."

Sam leaned toward the tracker. "Hiro, you hold Mina. That is the job."

The line stayed open long enough for Hiro to sigh.

"Fine. I will be emotionally responsible and physically horizontal."

Rina looked down at the tracker.

"Thank you."

Hiro’s voice softened again.

"Bring him back mean."

Sefa muttered, "I am here."

"Then complain louder."

The tracker crackled.

The safe house line cut to a green dot.

CONNECTED WITNESS: HIRO KANE.

CLAIM HELD: MINA CHO.

The floor around V-12 stayed dark.

The center had lost one name.

The room knew it.

The woman knew it.

Caleb knew it too, and the silver inside him hated the slowness of the win.

Slow meant people kept hurting.

Slow also meant Caleb stayed Caleb.

He held Sefa’s light ring outside his skin.

"Next small name," Sam said.

The Record turned one page by itself.

Twelve green floor names rearranged into a line.

At the top:

PASCO RELL.

Caleb went still.

Sam stopped breathing for half a second.

Sefa spoke from the case, very quietly.

"That one knows you."

The index ring turned.

The center screen printed:

NEXT CLAIMANT SELECTED.

VESSEL MEMORY CONFLICT DETECTED.

Caleb looked at Pasco’s name on the floor.

The silver waited for grief to become useful.

He kept his hand open.

"Ask him," Caleb said.
