My Magic Has No Upper Limit

Chapter 250 - 249: The Association Intervenes

After hearing Zelir’s words, Mayor Lewis’s expression changed slightly.

He was no fool. What Zelir said was logical and convincing.

Mayor Lewis suddenly recalled Vance’s recent actions.

He hadn’t known about the multiple commissions, but Lewis had sensed that Vance was vaguely involved in the disappearances of nearby vagrants.

But they were, after all, just vagrants and criminals with no rights. Besides, Lewis was on good terms with Vance, so he hadn’t bothered to intervene.

But now, analyzing it through the lens of Zelir’s words, it all seemed quite suspicious.

"You’re full of shit! You made it all up! What damn Cult? Utter nonsense!"

Vance roared hoarsely.

"I’ve already explained my reasoning! The only reason I didn’t announce the deaths of the previous Adventurer Squad was that I thought you’d all be too cowardly!"

"Mayor Lewis, you know me. The Wenmier Clan has been established in Falling Leaves Town for centuries. I would never do something like collude with a Cult!"

"Besides, this guy is just a Junior Mage. Do you really believe the Mage’s Guild would intervene for him? He’s just bluffing you all!"

"Mayor Lewis, if you really don’t believe me, then just do as you suggested before! Let them rest at an inn. I’ll stay right here in Wenmier Mansion, I swear I won’t go anywhere!"

Vance had to grasp this last lifeline. The plan Mayor Lewis had just proposed was extremely advantageous for him!

From Vance’s perspective, Zelir’s sudden assault was deadly.

There was indeed a lot of evidence related to the Cult hidden in his study. Because everything happened so suddenly, he hadn’t had time to destroy it.

As long as Mayor Lewis could get them out of the way... even for just a little while.

’I could quickly return to my study and destroy the evidence.’

’Burn what needs to be burned, shred what needs to be shredded.’

’Without any evidence, at worst, they can only make things difficult for me for withholding commission details.’

’I’ll just have to pay some money. What else can they do?’

’Surely they can’t strip me of my title over something like this?’

"Dream on. You’re not going anywhere, and neither are we," Zelir sneered.

"Mayor Lewis! You are the very picture of justice!"

Vance stared at the mayor with fervent eyes.

"Don’t listen to their nonsense! I’m willing to cooperate with the investigation, but I absolutely will not tolerate these thugs running wild in my home any longer. Please make them leave! This is a matter of upholding the dignity of the Nobility!"

"Mayor Lewis... after all these years of friendship, don’t you trust me?"

Throughout all this, Mayor Lewis remained silent, his gaze shifting back and forth.

He looked at Zelir, then at Vance.

Reason told him that Zelir was telling the truth.

He had risked his own safety and presented so much evidence; no matter how you looked at it, his credibility was higher than Vance’s.

Vance, on the other hand...

...was pure desperation, like a clown trying to hide the fact he’d soiled himself.

’A simple search should turn up plenty of clues.’

However, Lewis took a deep breath and spoke slowly.

"Captain Darius."

"Sir!" Darius immediately responded.

"Follow my previous orders. Escort this Adventurer Squad to the nearest inn to rest. Without my command, they are not to set foot in here again."

"Mayor...?" Darius was stunned.

He had already begun to side with Zelir in his heart. He never expected Mayor Lewis to issue such a command.

’Even a fool can see that Vance is the problem, can’t they?’

"What? Did you not hear what I said?" Mayor Lewis’s gaze swept over him.

A chill went through Darius’s heart, and he could only nod.

"Yes, sir!"

"Mayor Lewis!"

Zelir’s expression darkened slightly. "Are you saying that even with all this evidence, you still don’t believe me?"

"I have more faith in Patriarch Vance’s character," Lewis said gravely.

A look of ecstasy erupted on Vance’s face.

’Finally... I’m saved!’

"His character is a pile of filth, and you’ve chosen to put your faith in filth!" Zelir said coldly.

"Watch your tongue!" Mayor Lewis snapped.

Inwardly, however, he was still nervous.

’To be honest, Zelir’s words are far more credible.’

’But...’

Mayor Lewis absolutely could not let news of a noble in his jurisdiction being involved with a Cult get out.

Not only would Vance be finished, but his own reputation would also take a massive blow.

He would never be able to shake the label of "negligent supervision and harboring a Cult." His political career could very well be over.

Not to mention he had turned a blind eye to Vance’s dealings with the vagrants and criminals. If this were truly investigated, it would be a dereliction of his duty.

In a way, he and Vance were in the same boat.

Separating the two warring factions and safely escorting one of them to an inn—while in reality this favored Vance, giving him time to destroy the evidence—was, on the surface, a completely faultless action.

Even if people from the Mage’s Guild did show up, Lewis would have a plausible explanation.

"I already told you, Vance. You’re not going anywhere!"

Zelir said coldly, "And we’re not going anywhere either. We’ll wait right here for the Mage’s Guild to arrive."

"I have shown you enough respect. Don’t push your luck."

Mayor Lewis narrowed his eyes. "This is Falling Leaves Town. This is my jurisdiction!"

"And if I don’t comply? What are you going to do, kill me?" Zelir retorted, matching his intensity.

"You’re forcing my hand...!"

Lewis’s eye twitched.

"Darius! Disarm them!"

He waved his hand angrily. "Just don’t kill them! I hear the Mage’s Guild has someone who knows the Healing Skill anyway."

"Yes, sir."

Darius acknowledged the order.

The surrounding Black Armored Guards slowly closed in. Darius and the two Middle Level Warriors behind him also advanced.

With the order not to kill, the Middle Level Rangers in their formation quietly shifted their aim from heads to arms or legs.

The tip of Zelir’s Night Peace Staff pressed against Vance’s throat.

His voice was just as chilling. "One more step, and I’ll run him through the neck. The Healing Skill won’t be able to save him from that..."

"You’re really courting death...!" Mayor Lewis was thoroughly enraged.

He had never met such an arrogant brat.

A powerful Magic Wave suddenly swept through the area, making everyone’s heart tremble.

The guards in the room staggered and stumbled, their formation instantly falling into disarray.

Even the chandelier overhead began to sway.

"This... This is..."

Darius, the strongest among them, looked toward the entrance of the main hall behind him, an extremely dangerous premonition suddenly rising in his heart.

He had never encountered such a tyrannical Magic Wave!

Zelir’s originally grim expression relaxed, and he too looked toward the door.

’Thank heavens.’

’The people from the Mage’s Guild are here!’

"Where is Zelir?"

A familiar female voice came from the hallway, her tone filled with obvious urgency.

When he saw who had arrived, Zelir’s face lit up with joy.

Flaxen hair was draped over her shoulders, her gentle face etched with anxiety. Her eyes darted around, searching for the person she wanted to see.

It was Instructor Manlin!

"Instructor Manlin!" Zelir immediately waved.

Instructor Manlin’s gaze passed over the crowd of people. When it finally landed on Zelir at the far end of the main hall, she let out a long sigh of relief. Zelir was all right. That was all that mattered.

A few hours ago, when she received Zelir’s handwritten letter from the gatekeeper, Manlin had been given a huge shock.

All this talk about a noble colluding with a Cult, and him having already launched a surprise attack on the noble’s estate...

Even Manlin had never encountered such a situation before.

Immediately after, another familiar figure appeared behind Manlin.

A tall, thin Mage wearing a monocle—Marvin.

"Instructor Marvin!" Zelir waved his hand and shouted again.

Zelir himself had never expected Instructor Manlin and Instructor Marvin to come in person.

Marcus and the others also breathed a sigh of relief.

Forget the status of an Upper Level Mage; based on power alone, Marvin and Manlin together could annihilate ten Security Teams like this one without a scratch.

’Finally, we can take a breather...’

Mayor Lewis looked at the two Mages who had suddenly appeared, his expression a mix of shock and suspicion.

That tyrannical Magic Wave from just now had completely shattered his side’s morale.

’The Mage’s Guild actually sent people?’

’And they look... very strong.’

"I am the mayor of Falling Leaves Town, Lewis Marshall."

Lewis suppressed the terror in his heart and was the first to ask, "And you are...?"

"Manlin, Upper Level Mage of the Black Stone Town Mage’s Guild."

Manlin flashed her badge, her attitude cold.

There was no need to question its authenticity; the exquisite, flawless jade alone was enough to confirm her identity.

"Marvin Koffler, Upper Level Mage of the Black Stone Town Mage’s Guild."

Marvin also spoke up. "We received a message from Zelir and have come to investigate."

Two Upper Level Mages!

It wasn’t just Lewis; everyone else present, including Vance, felt a chill run down their spines.

The arrogant air Lewis had moments ago vanished without a trace.

In terms of town status, Falling Leaves Town was already inferior to Black Stone Town.

Falling Leaves Town didn’t even have a Mage’s Guild, and it had only grown to its current size by relying on trade related to Black Stone Town.

Before today, Lewis had never even met an Upper Level Mage, and now he was seeing two at once.

’And they all came for Zelir?’

’Who the hell is this kid?’

Lewis grew uneasy.

’It seems I’ve messed with the wrong person...’

Without Marvin or Manlin even needing to speak, the surrounding guards automatically parted ways, even taking a few steps back.

"Zelir..."

Manlin strode forward, cupping Zelir’s cheeks in her warm palms. She looked him over from left to right, her eyes full of heartache.

"How did you end up like this?"

Before Zelir could even speak, a pure stream of Magic Energy emanated from Manlin’s body, enveloping him.

The Empowerment Magic cast by Manlin was far more effective than Zelir’s own.

The injuries his body couldn’t repair on its own began to mend rapidly, and his former vitality was restored.
