Chapter 244 - 243: Don’t Do Anything Stupid
Zelir smiled and spread his hands, showing he meant no threat.
At his words, the two guards thought for a moment, and their faces lit up with recognition.
"Oh... it’s you."
The young guard breathed a sigh of relief.
They had a rather deep impression of Zelir, always feeling he had a special, friendly aura about him.
But then they looked at the people behind Zelir.
The guard they’d just let down went right back up.
These people looked less like they were here to report on a mission and more like they were here to take a life.
They clearly looked like they had been through a bitter fight. Their Armor was battered, their clothes were dirty, and they were spattered with bloodstains.
And judging by their expressions, they all seemed rather angry.
"We have urgent business to report to Patriarch Vance."
Zelir’s expression turned serious. "The situation is urgent. Please let us in."
The young guard hesitated for a moment but still held out a hand to stop them.
"Wait a moment... According to the Wenmier Clan’s regulations, for any unannounced visitors, we must first report to Patriarch Vance."
As he spoke, he was about to head into the residence to find a superior to report to.
"The situation is urgent. There’s no time to wait for you to report."
Zelir’s gaze sharpened, and he took a step forward. "Please let us in now."
’Report?’
’Absolutely not.’
Of course, he couldn’t let the guard go and report.
’Who knows if Vance, upon being warned, would feign illness out of guilt and refuse to see them, or simply flee through some secret passage in the mansion?’
However, Zelir’s urgency aroused the old guard’s suspicion, and he spoke up.
"Didn’t we already tell you? If you want to go in, you have to wait to be announced. Just wait here."
Faced with the old guard’s renewed obstruction, the team members exchanged glances, having already made up their minds.
"Tsk... why be so rigid? There’s no need for all these procedures. We’re very familiar with Patriarch Vance."
Gray spoke up as well. "Take my advice: let us in, and we can all get along peacefully."
"No."
With the old guard’s stance made clear, the young guard also refused sternly.
His hand was already on the hilt of his sword. "Back away now, or we will treat this as an attack!"
"There’s really no need for this..."
Seeing the young guard’s action, Gray slowly shook his head. "I’ll warn you in advance: don’t do anything stupid."
The young guard gritted his teeth. Facing the group that still hadn’t backed down, a look of resolve flashed in his eyes.
He still chose to resort to force.
"SHING..."
The scraping sound of the Longsword being drawn was only half-finished when Gray’s Jab smashed into his face.
It was too fast; the young guard had no time to dodge.
"THUD!"
"URGH..."
With a muffled thud, the young guard fell to the ground, clutching his nose in pain as blood seeped through his fingers.
"See, I warned you," Gray said, shaking his fist.
The remaining old guard was aghast.
It wasn’t that he’d never encountered people trying to force their way into the mansion.
But most of them would back down after a simple threat. No one dared to truly violate the dignity of the Nobility.
’But these Adventurers... they actually attacked?’
’This is the Wenmier Clan’s territory!’
Since they had already made their move, there was no need to waste any more time.
The team began to force their way through the main gate!
The old guard tried to draw the sword at his waist while yelling "Intruders!"
But Maki didn’t give him the chance. He lunged forward and, with a clean headbutt, knocked him down!
Gray let out a loud whistle.
"Forcing our way into a noble’s mansion... I feel like this is even more thrilling than battling the Bone Centaur!"
"This is a serious crime for commoners. What are you so happy about?" Valles shot Gray a sideways glance.
"I don’t know, I just feel really excited!"
Gray’s face was animated with delight. "Maybe I was born to do bad things."
After breaking through the main gate, Zelir looked at the various paths before them, feeling a bit troubled.
He hadn’t paid much attention when they came here before, and on top of that, Zelir was naturally terrible with directions.
For a moment, he had no idea which way to go.
"Hss..."
Zelir scratched his head. "Where was the house that Vance lives in again? I forgot."
"This way!" Marcus immediately pointed in the right direction.
"I knew you were the most reliable when it comes to finding the way!" Zelir immediately followed Marcus’s lead.
The team began to move quickly, cutting straight toward their goal like a dagger to the heart.
It was now a relatively busy time in the early morning, and many servants and maids were up and working.
The team could have made it back to Falling Leaves Town by midnight.
But damn it all, the coachman who had sworn he would be waiting for them under the big tree was nowhere to be found.
So Zelir and the others had no choice but to travel back on foot, walking until dawn.
At first, Zelir and the others thought about trying to hide, but no matter how they tried to keep a low profile, the team was still quite conspicuous.
A young maid was humming a song, walking with a basket full of bedsheets.
Suddenly, she ran right into this group of menacing intruders.
Time seemed to freeze in that moment.
The maid’s eyes widened in terror, the basket fell from her hands, and then came a scream.
"AHHH!!!"
The sharp shriek burst out, piercing enough to make one’s eardrums ache.
That one scream was like water thrown into boiling oil; the situation exploded in an instant.
A nearby gardener, passing servants, and other attendants all turned their gazes toward them.
After getting a clear look at the team, they were all scared out of their wits and thrown into a panic.
"AHHH!!!"
"Shh! Shhh! Shhh!"
Even though Maki kept making hushing gestures at them, the people kept screaming.
"Don’t waste your energy. You’d be screaming too if you were them," Zelir sighed.
"Do these people not have brains? What is there to scream about?"
Maki frowned. "It’s not like we’re after them."
"Probably because you look pretty scary right now?" Gray said, scrutinizing Maki.
He was already a burly man with a rough appearance, and now he was in blood-soaked clothes, sneaking around furtively.
It was hard not to think that some kind of deranged killer had broken into the mansion.
"Damn it," Maki cursed under his breath.
The waves of screams had already given away their position. With Stealth hopeless, the team stopped hiding and simply picked up their pace.
They rushed out of the winding garden path and rounded a corner.
They arrived at an open, white-stone courtyard.
All they had to do was cross this courtyard and pass through the corridor at the far end to reach the house where Vance lived.
However, the screams had indeed caused trouble.
"Form up! Stop them!"
Along with an angry roar, a group of fully armed soldiers poured in from the courtyard’s exit to the corridor.
There were about a dozen of them.
They were all uniformly clad in half-plate armor, with the Wenmier Clan’s crest emblazoned on their chests, wielding Long Halberds or swords.
