Chapter 412. He was lucky
(A Few Days Later...)
Asher lay flat on his back in his tiny security guard quarters, staring blankly at the ceiling. His expression was that of despair.
Two dark shadows coalesced on the floor beside his bed, tearing open as Rex and Ifrit materialized. Asher bolted upright, a flicker of hope igniting in his eyes.
"Did you find them?" he asked, his voice rasping.
The two demons lowered their heads, refusing to meet his gaze.
"We apologize, Master," Rex murmured quietly. "Without a personal item to trace, relying purely on scent across this city is proving... difficult."
Asher’s jaw clenched. "Damn it! It’s been four whole days!" He threw his head back, waving a hand dismissively as he averted his eyes. "Just... keep looking. Please."
"As you command, Master," they replied in unison before melting back into the shadows.
Asher pinched the bridge of his nose. Cold anxiety twisted in his gut. Had they survived? Or had they been incinerated when Akira pressed that detonator and brought the entire underground facility crashing down?
His mother... his father. His ex-wife. Zero and his mutated child.
"They have to be alive," he told himself desperately. Zero had a head start. He had a concrete escape plan. He must’ve grabbed Asher’s parents, and rendezvous with Karen in the secondary tunnels.
Letting out a ragged breath, Asher fell back onto his mattress.
When he first returned to Earth, his sole purpose had been to exact a merciless revenge on Karen. That rage had been his purpose. It was the burning fuel that made her to keep going.
But Earth had forced a bitter lesson upon him.
Karen had cheated. She had betrayed him. No matter how tragic her circumstances were, nothing could erase the pain of walking in on her that night.
Then there was Akira, his own flesh and blood. A brother who had sacrificed their parents, turned himself into a monster, and drenched his hands in innocent blood, all to prove an obsessive, twisted definition of "brotherly love."
And suddenly, Asher felt lost in the grey.
Love was an unsettling force. It could inspire someone to perform miracles, or give a broken soul a reason to smile again. But it could also warp into something selfish, cruel, and monstrous. It drove people to cross lines they once swore they would never touch, turning them into demons just to shield the ones they cherished.
That was what had happened to Karen.
She wasn’t trying to destroy Asher for pleasure; she was desperately trying to buy back her husband’s freedom and save her dying child. So she dragged herself through the mud. She used him, an innocent man. She sold pieces of her soul and swallowed her dignity, all to keep her family breathing.
None of it made her betrayal right of course. It didn’t erase the sleepless nights where Asher had questioned his own worth, nor did it heal the wound in his chest. But for the first time, he could finally understand why.
Asher stared at the ceiling as his eyes welled with quiet tears. He had spent months viewing Karen as an irredeemable villain. Perhaps she wasn’t. Perhaps she was simply a desperate human being cornered by cruel fate, making choices he could never accept.
And perhaps, if the roles were reversed and he had been stripped of everything... he might have made choices he hated, too.
Asher closed his eyes, letting a heavy breath slip past his lips. "Love..."
He finally understood why Ifrit treated the word with such utter contempt. Love was a blessing, but it was also a curse. It could make someone lay down their life for another and it could make them casually ruin a stranger’s life without a second thought.
He turned onto his side. The grand revenge he had craved for so long no longer brought a pulse of satisfaction. It didn’t feel meaningless, either—it simply felt hollow.
He had spent countless nights imagining Karen weeping at his feet, begging for mercy, finally realizing the magnitude of what she had destroyed. He had wanted to stand over her, cold and triumphant.
Now? He didn’t care for the spectacle. He still despised what she had done, and a part of him always would. But he no longer carried a burning hatred for her humanity.
It wasn’t a grand, cinematic forgiveness that erased the past or pretended the scars weren’t there. It was the quiet, necessary kind—the kind that allowed him to finally stop carrying her sins on his own back. He didn’t need to forgive Karen for her sake. He needed to let go for his own.
Click.
The door to his room swung open, breaking the silence. Loona stepped inside, a warm, radiant smile gracing her lips as she carried a wooden tray.
Asher quickly wiped his eyes and forced a gentle smile onto his face, refusing to burden her with his gloom. She had already suffered enough at the hands of the Shinigami.
"Wakey, wakey!" she hummed softly, setting the tray down beside him on the narrow bed. "I cooked you some fresh herb porridge."
Asher raised an eyebrow, letting out a soft chuckle. "Porridge? Out of all the things you could make?"
"Yup!" Loona giggled, picking up the spoon. "You’re recovering, Master, so you need something light and soothing. Now... open wide. Say ahhh..."
Asher complied, letting her feed him. The porridge was warm, its gentle heat spreading through his chest and easing the knot in his stomach.
Looking at Loona, Asher realized something. He was lucky. He had been granted a System, a second chance at life, and genuine loyalty from people who truly cared for him. Chasing a ghost just to watch an ex-wife grovel suddenly felt remarkably small.
After he finished eating, Loona guided him to her quarters, where she had prepared a steaming bath. She gently scrubbed the tension from his back before helping him into clean clothes.
Lying back together on her bed, they sought comfort in each other’s warmth. Through their quiet, intimate lovemaking, Asher slowly replenished his depleted reserves, building up the Pleasure Points required to eventually tear open a portal and return home. To the fantasy world where he belonged.
