Chapter 405. Swagger

(A Few Moments Earlier)

A chillingly familiar voice roared from the hallway, dripping with unbridled rage.

"Where is that ungrateful bitch?!"

Loona’s heart stopped. Josh.

When he slammed into the room where she was tied up, his face was contorted in fury, dark veins bulging against his neck. He lunged toward her before she could even brace herself.

"How DARE you?!" he roared, delivering a thunderous slap that sent her vision spinning.

SLAP! SLAP!

A brutal barrage of blows rained down on her.

"What possessed you to think you could sleep around behind my back?!" he spat, seething. "You’re my possession! My fucking whore! What kind of loser made you give away what belongs to me?!"

Loona couldn’t move. She couldn’t speak. She could only weep as the physical pain blended with the venom of his words.

Josh pulled his sleeves back, breathing heavily. "I suppose the saying is true—hungry dogs are never loyal. I dragged you out of your miserable life! You were living with a gambling-addicted father under a mountain of debt, and I brought you here so you could sleep with a full stomach on comfortable sheets every single night. I gave you a good life! And this is how you repay me? You ungrateful, brainless lizard!"

’A good life?’ Loona thought bitterly, though she didn’t dare say it aloud. ’You ripped me from my home, took my innocence by force, and trapped me in the role of a obedient housewife. Every day has been a cage. Deep down, I knew I was never meant for freedom or happiness—not after life took the only person who ever truly cared about me. My mother.’

Josh kept shouting, hurling insults and heavy slaps, but Loona slowly tuned him out. The pain was numb now; she had long since lost count of the beatings. In the quiet corners of her mind, a dark thought took root: ’Maybe it’s better to die now than keep living like this.’

Finally, the assault tapered off.

Loona was left a broken mess—her hair disheveled, one eye swelling purple, a slow drizzle of blood trailing from her nose down her swollen lips.

Taking deep, heavy breaths, Josh stared down at his handywork with twisted satisfaction. "As much as I’d love to kill you right now, I won’t," he muttered, turning his back on her. "You’re still human, and as Shinigami, we have standards. We don’t just execute people. No... we turn them into test subjects."

He paused at the doorway, a cruel smirk touching his lips. "Oh, and speaking of... your father missing fingers on both hands must make life pretty tough for him without anyone to care for him. Maybe I’ll send my boys to put him out of his misery."

Loona’s heart hammered against her ribs. Her father. As much of a jerk as he had become, he was still her dad. He had worked hard to take care of her and her mother when she was little. It was only when the economy collapsed and unemployment soared that he turned to gambling out of desperation, trying to make quick cash to feed them. He had spiraled into addiction, but like any other person suffering from addiction out there, he deserved a second chance to fix things. He didn’t deserve to die.

"Please...!" she sobbed, her voice breaking. "Please... do whatever you want with me. Turn me into a lab rat, anything! Just don’t touch my father!"

Josh whipped around, his expression contorting with renewed fury. "How dare you try to order me around!"

"I’m begging you... dear husband, leave my—"

"I am NOT your husband, you piece of trash!" he barked. "I have a real wife and a family. You are nothing more than a fuck toy and a convenient cover story to make society think I’m just a married corporate worker!"

Despair washed over Loona. Tears streamed down her face, and a single tear slipped off her chin, landing directly on the pendant of the necklace Asher had given her. A strange wave of warmth pulsed faintly against her chest.

Grasping at the last shred of hope, she whispered a desperate prayer: ’Please... help me, Master...’

"Boys!" Josh barked to his guards. "Take her to the transport! No special treatment—treat her like the rest of the prisoners!"

Before the lackeys could grab her, the shadows in the corner of the room swirled violently upward. A dense, unnatural darkness coiled together, coalescing into two figures.

The guards stumbled backward in shock. "What the hell?! What just happened?!"

"Is that... a kid and a puppy?" another gasped.

Standing in the dissipating darkness was a boy who looked no older than five, accompanied by a small puppy at his side.

"Good grief," a voice rasped from the shadows. It wasn’t the voice of a child—it was deep, resonant, and carried a chilling weight that rattled everyone’s bones. "How dare you puny mortals refer to me as a child? I should burn you into oblivion!"

Josh furrowed his brow, trying to mask his unease. "Who the hell are you? What kind of serum did you use to break into my domain?"

"Serum? What rubbish are you babbling, you worthless worm?" the deep voice snapped. "Not only did you lay your hands on what belongs to my master, but you dared to strike her. For that, you deserve the hellfire of decimation! No... that would be far too quick. How about the Eternal Flames of the Devil?!"

A beat of heavy silence blanketed the room. Then, the lackeys erupted into laughter.

"Oh man, what is this kid talking about?!"

"He must be some Commander’s kid who stole his dad’s experimental serum and is playing dress-up!"

"Tsk... kids these days really think they’re—"

SCHLICK!

The last guard’s vision suddenly flipped upside down as he watched the floor rush up to meet him. It wasn’t the room spinning—it was his head, severed clean from his shoulders.

"Stupid humans," the puppy grunted, shaking blood off its paw. "They lack morals even more than us demons. I couldn’t help myself."

The room froze. Everyone stared in absolute horror as the headless torso collapsed to the floor, spraying crimson blood everywhere, while the reality set in: the puppy had just killed a man and ...it talked.

The boy stepped forward as the remaining shadow dissipated. "Now, now, Rex. You didn’t have to kill the brat so quickly."

The puppy scoffed. "Tsk... don’t act like you didn’t want to wipe them out yourself. They struck a nerve, didn’t they?"

The boy flashed a sharp, shark-like grin, his spiky red hair catching the dim light. "Well, you’re not wrong! But we’ll have to apologize to Master for killing without his permission."

Terrified by the instantaneous execution, Josh and his remaining men backed away, sweating profusely. Josh’s mind raced—there were no P-series serums capable of giving animals speech or super-speed. What were these things?

Trembling, Josh clung desperately to his pride as a General Commander. "I don’t know who you are, but trespassing in my hideout makes you my enemies. Leave now, and I might let you walk out of here alive!"

The boy took a step forward, chuckling softly. He slicked back his hair and struck a dramatically haughty pose.

"I am Ifrit! Lord of the Smokeless Flames! The most feared demonic sword in existence! I fear no one! Do your worst, human!"

Rex covered his eyes with a paw in second-hand embarrassment. "How many times do I have to tell you? That pose isn’t cool. You look ridiculous."

"Shut your trap, you stinking hellhound! You’re just jealous of my swagger!"

"Swagger? From a glorified talking sword? I’d rather be jealous of a rock."

While the two squabbled, Loona sat frozen in terror alongside the guards. Catching her wide-eyed stare, Ifrit clicked his fingers. Instantly, the ropes binding her turned to ash and drifted away.

He offered her a surprisingly gentlemanly hand, pressing his other palm to his chest. "Apologies for startling you, my lady. We are here to rescue you—by order of our master."

"Master...?" Loona whispered.

"Yes," Ifrit smiled warmly. "Master Asher Reynolds."
