Chapter 87: [88]: Zero Abilities Active, The Broken Three
Monday. 9 AM. Private facility. Upstate.
The building looked like a spa that had given up. Beige walls. manicured hedges. The kind of place rich families sent daughters when they didn’t want to explain what happened. M’s money. M’s discretion.
Lucas checked in at reception. A nurse with tired eyes and a name tag reading "Annette" led him down a corridor that smelled like antiseptic and lavender. Someone’s idea of comfort. The lavender wasn’t working.
"No abilities," he muttered to himself.
"I’m sorry?" Annette said.
"Nothing. Talking to myself."

I can analyze. I cannot influence.
This is the first time since
activation that I’ve been
completely passive.
It feels like wearing a blindfold
and earplugs at the same time.
But you don’t need eyes to listen.
Listen, Master. That’s all
we can do today."]
```
First woman. Room 114.
Annette stopped at the door. "Maria Santos. Thirty-four. She was his primary target. He had her for eight months. She hasn’t spoken in eleven days. She doesn’t eat unless prompted. She doesn’t sleep without medication. She stares at walls."
"Has anyone tried therapy?"
"Three therapists. She doesn’t respond. She was amplified supernaturally. Normal therapy bounces off."
"What did he do to her specifically?"
"Built her desire to a level her body couldn’t sustain. Then cut it off. Cold. The withdrawal is physical. Not just psychological. Her body is craving something that doesn’t exist in nature."
Supernatural pleasure withdrawal. He amplified her until she was addicted to the feeling. Then took it away. Like getting someone hooked on a drug only he could provide. Then disappearing.
He opened the door.
Maria Santos sat in a chair by the window. Curled into herself. Knees to her chest. Arms wrapped around her shins. She was thin. Too thin. The hospital gown hung off her frame like a tent. Dark hair, unwashed, falling across her face. Brown skin, golden undertones faded to gray. She’d been beautiful once. You could see it in the bone structure. High cheekbones. Full lips. Wide-set eyes that might have been warm. Now they were empty. Staring at nothing.
She wore no makeup. No jewelry. Her fingernails were bitten to the quick. A scar on her left wrist. Old. Not recent. She’d been hurting before Crane. He’d just found the wound and poured salt in it.
He didn’t speak. He walked in. Sat on the floor. Cross-legged. Three feet from her chair. Below her eye line. Non-threatening. Small.
He sat there for forty minutes.
She didn’t look at him. Didn’t acknowledge him. Her breathing was shallow. Mechanical. The breathing of someone who’d forgotten why breathing mattered.
At minute forty-one, she spoke. One word.
"Different."
Her voice was rust. Disuse. A throat that hadn’t vibrated in eleven days.
"What?" He kept his voice soft. Neutral.
"You feel different. From him." Her eyes didn’t move. Still staring at the wall. "He felt like fire. You feel like..." She trailed off.
"Like what?"
"Quiet."
I feel like quiet. After months of abilities humming in my chest, after Charm Aura and Pleasure Touch and Pheromone Burst, I feel like quiet to her. Because I turned everything off. Because for the first time since the System activated, I’m just a person.
"Is quiet okay?"
"Quiet is safe." Her eyes moved. First time. Looking at him. Brown. Empty. But looking. "Fire burns."
"I won’t burn you."
"Everyone burns."
"Not everyone."
She looked away. Back at the wall. But her breathing had changed. Slightly. Marginally. Deeper. The breathing of someone who’d registered a presence and decided not to flee.
Progress.
[Name: Maria Santos]
[Age: 34]
[Condition: Supernatural withdrawal]
[Status: SPOKE. First words in 11 days.]
[Method: Presence. Silence. No abilities.]
[Duration: 47 min]
[NOTE: "She said I feel different.
She said I feel quiet.
She hasn’t spoken in 11 days
and she spoke to me.
No abilities. No charm.
Just a boy sitting on a floor.
This works. This WORKS, Master.
More than any phase. More than
any taming percentage. This works."]
Second woman. Room 208.
Annette stopped at the door. Held up a hand. "Jennifer Chen. Twenty-nine. She’s aggressive. Violent with male staff. She broke a nurse’s nose last week. We keep male staff out of her wing."
"How do you want me to approach?"
"We don’t. She does. She screams through the door sometimes. Asking if anyone is there. But when someone opens it, she attacks."
"What did Crane do to her?"
"Trust. He made her trust him completely. Amplified the bond until she couldn’t question him. Then he used that trust to violate every boundary she had. When she finally broke, he left. She can’t be in the same room as a man without interpreting everything as a precursor to violation."
He weaponized trust. The most fundamental human need. Connection. Safety. He took it, amplified it, and turned it into a trap.
Lucas stood outside the door. Didn’t open it. Leaned against the wall.
"Jennifer."
Silence.
"My name is Lucas. I’m not a doctor. I’m not a therapist. I’m not here to make you do anything."
Silence.
"I know what he did. Not exactly. But I know what it feels like to have something inside you that makes people trust you. I have it too. He used it to hurt you. I want to understand how."
A sound from inside. Movement. Then her voice. Muffled through the door. Young. Sharp. Frightened.
"You have it too. The feeling."
"Yes."
"Then you’re dangerous."
"Yes."
"Why should I talk to you?"
"You shouldn’t. Not yet. I just wanted you to know someone is out here. And that the door stays closed until you want it open."
Silence. Long. He waited.
"Are you still there?" she asked. Quieter now.
"I’m still here."
"Don’t leave."
"I won’t."
He sat against the wall. She sat against the other side of the same wall. They couldn’t see each other. She preferred it that way.
"What’s your name again?"
"Lucas."
"Lucas." She repeated it. Testing the shape of it. "He said his name was Victor. Said it like he was winning something."
"Sounds about right."
"He made me feel safe. That was the worst part. Not the fear after. The safety before. Because it wasn’t real. None of it was real."
"The safety or the feeling?"
"Both. Neither. I don’t know." A sound that might have been a laugh. Broken. "I can’t tell anymore. What’s real. What’s amplified. What’s me."
"That’s why I’m here. To help you figure out what’s you."
"You can’t even figure out your own stuff. I can hear it in your voice."
"You’re right. I can’t. But I can sit on this side of the wall until you’re ready to open the door."
She didn’t respond. But she didn’t tell him to leave. And when he stood to go an hour later, she said: "Same time tomorrow?"
"Same time tomorrow."
[MENDING LOG — PATIENT 2]
[Name: Jennifer Chen]
[Age: 29]
[Condition: Trust violation trauma]
[Status: COMMUNICATING through door]
[Method: Honesty. Wall. No physical contact.]
[Duration: 62 min]
[NOTE: "She said ’don’t leave.’
Two words. From a woman who
broke a nurse’s nose.
She told me I was dangerous.
She was right. She told me
I couldn’t fix my own stuff.
Also right.
But she asked for tomorrow.
That’s everything."]
```
Third woman. Room 312.
Annette stopped outside. Her face changed. Something softer. Sadder.
"Patricia Webb. Forty-one. She’s different from the others. Maria won’t speak. Jennifer can’t stop reacting. Patricia feels... nothing. At all. She was a painter. He amplified her creative passion until it consumed her. Then withdrew. Now she can’t feel passion for anything. Not art. Not people. Not food. Not anger. Nothing. She sits. She breathes. She exists. That’s all."
He took passion from a painter. Amplified it until it was everything. Then removed it. And left a woman who can’t feel anything at all.
Patricia Webb sat in a chair in the center of the room. She wasn’t curled up like Maria. Wasn’t hiding like Jennifer. She was just... there. Present in body. Absent in everything else.
She’d been beautiful. Still was, technically. Tall. Five-eight. Red hair, once vibrant, now dull. Washed but not styled. Falling past her shoulders without intention. Green eyes that should have burned. They didn’t. They reflected light and nothing else. Pale skin. Irish heritage. Freckles across her nose and shoulders. The hospital gown was too big. She’d lost weight. Her collarbones jutted. Her wrists were thin. The hands of a painter. Long fingers. Ink-stained. She hadn’t painted in months.
He sat across from her. She didn’t look at him. Didn’t not look at him. Simply didn’t register his existence as relevant.
"Patricia."
Nothing.
"I’m Lucas."
Nothing.
"I have something inside me. Similar to what he had. The thing that lets you feel too much. I turned mine off today. So right now, I’m just a person."
Her eyes moved. Slowly. Finding him. Not with interest. Not with fear. With the mechanical attention of someone who’d been told to look at something.
"You’re the first one who said that."
"Said what?"
"That you turned it off." Her voice was flat. Monotone. The voice of someone speaking from inside a glass jar. "They all say they understand. The therapists. The nurses. They don’t understand. They can’t. But you said you turned it off. Which means you know it’s on."
"I know."
"He made me feel everything. All at once. Every emotion. Every sensation. Like being thrown into the sun. And then nothing. Like the sun went out and left me in the dark." She looked at her hands. The painter’s hands. "I used to see color. Now I see categories. Red is a wavelength. Blue is a frequency. I know what they are. I just can’t feel what they mean."
He reached across. Slowly. Giving her time to pull away. She didn’t move. He took her hand. Just held it. No Pleasure Touch. No ability. Just warmth. Human warmth.
She looked at their hands. His around hers. Warm. Hers cold.
"I can feel that you’re warm," she said. "I can’t feel that it’s nice."
"That’s okay. Nice can come later."
"Can it?"
"I don’t know. But I’ll sit here until we find out."
She didn’t respond. But she didn’t pull her hand away. And thirty minutes later, she cried. Silently. Tears running down her face. No sound. No expression change. Just water. Leaking from eyes that had been dry for weeks.

[NOTE: "She cried. No sound.
No expression. Just tears.
Her body remembered something
her mind hasn’t found yet.
I held her hand. That’s all.
Just held it. And her body
responded to warmth.
This is what I was meant for.
Not taming. Not phases.

HEALING.

```
He drove back to the hotel. Exhausted. Drained in a way that stats couldn’t measure. No TP earned. No progress tracked. No phases completed.
Just three broken women. And a boy with a turned-off System sitting on floors and holding hands.
His phone buzzed. Elena.
"How was it?
He typed for a long time. Deleted. Retyped.
"She spoke. Eleven days of silence and she spoke to me. And another one cried. And the third one asked me to come back tomorrow.
Elena: That’s my boy.
Lucas: I didn’t do anything. I just sat there.
Elena: That’s everything. That’s the whole point. You just sat there. And it was enough.
He stared at the message. Tomorrow, he’d go back. And the next day. And the next. Until Maria could speak in sentences. Until Jennifer could open the door. Until Patricia could feel that warmth was nice.
No System. No abilities. No phases.
Just Lucas.
The kid who faked a sink leak because he couldn’t stand being lonely.
Turns out, that kid was enough.
