Chapter 112: Phase 1 Complete, Midnight Confession at the Diet

Thursday. The dojo again. She’ll pretend nothing happened. I’ll let her pretend. And every time she picks up that shinai, her fingers will remember what my skin felt like.*

*The vault has three cracks now. And cracks don’t close. They widen.*

---

February 18th. 11 PM. Peninsula Tokyo.

Tomoe’s text arrived at 11:03 PM. Not through Diana. Direct. Her number saved in his phone after the dojo session. She’d programmed it herself. Took his phone. Typed it in. Handed it back without comment.

Three lines. Punctuation precise.

*Are you awake?*

*I’m in my office. Working late. I find myself not wanting to be alone tonight.*

Lucas stared at the screen. Tomoe Ito does not text. She emails. She calls. She schedules through intermediaries. Texting at 11 PM was the equivalent of Elena showing up in his hoodie at midnight. It meant the walls came down while nobody was watching.

Elena rolled over in bed. Read the screen over his shoulder. One eye open.

"She texted you. Directly. At 11 PM."

"I know."

"That’s not political. That’s personal."

"I know."

"Go." She closed her eye. "Come back. Don’t do anything I wouldn’t do."

"That’s a wide category."

"It’s intentionally wide. Use your judgment." She pulled the blanket over her shoulder. "She’s lonely, Lucas. Lonelier than I was. At least I had Persephone."

He dressed. Dark jeans. Sweater. No suit. Not a professional visit. Not a consultation. A human being answering another human being’s 11 PM confession of loneliness.

The Diet building at midnight was a different creature. Daytime bustle gone. Corridors echoed with his footsteps. Security nodded him through. Diana’s clearance. His visitor badge felt like a lie. This wasn’t official.

Tomoe’s office. Light under the door. He knocked. Once.

"Enter."

She sat at her desk. The lamp on, overhead lights off. The room reduced to a pool of warm yellow around her workspace. Blazer removed. Charcoal blouse. Sleeves rolled to her elbows. Forearms bare. The forearms she’d wrapped around his three days ago.

Her hair was down. First time he’d seen it down outside Hakone. The severe style gone. Silver-streaked black falling past her shoulders. Transforming her face. The sharp angles softened. She looked younger. Or older. Or just less defended.

*Hair down at midnight in a dark office. She’s not Representative Ito right now. She’s just Tomoe. The person who exists when the title comes off.*

Two cups of tea on the desk. Green. Already poured. She’d expected him to come. She’d prepared tea for two at 11 PM because she knew he’d say yes.

"Sit." She gestured to the chair. The short chair. Then paused. Reached behind her desk. Pulled out a different chair. Same height as hers.

"You said not to let Hiroshi seat me in the short chair."

"You remembered."

"You remembered first."

Something crossed her face. The ghost of amusement. There for a moment. Gone. But taking longer to fade each time.

He sat. She sipped her tea. Set it down. The silence stretched. Not uncomfortable. Heavy. The weight of things about to be said.

"I don’t do this," she said finally.

"Do what?"

"Ask people to come. At night. To my office. I don’t need company. I don’t seek it. I function alone. I have always functioned alone." She looked at her tea. "Tonight I couldn’t."

"What changed?"

"I lost a vote today. Ethics amendment. Transparency provision. Killed by a coalition I can’t prove was bribed." Her voice was steady but the edges were frayed. Like a rope that had held too much weight for too long. "I gave sixteen years to this institution. And one bribe undoes it."

"The institution isn’t the work. The work is the work."

"What’s the difference?"

"The institution is the building. The work is what you do inside it. Buildings fall. Work endures."

She looked at him. Not evaluating. Not assessing. Seeing. The same way she’d looked at him after he said "connection" at dinner. Like he’d spoken in a language she’d forgotten she knew.

"You say things that I used to believe." She stood. Walked to the window. The Diet gardens dark below. Bare trees. February frost. "Before I came here, I was a philosopher. I studied Aristotle. Machiavelli. I wanted to understand power. Not wield it. Understand it."

"What happened?"

"I entered parliament. And power understood me." She pressed her fingertips to the glass. Cold. "I became what I swore I wouldn’t."

"Which was?"

She turned. Leaned against the window. Arms crossed. The posture of someone about to confess something they’d never said out loud.

"My mother was a traditional wife. No career. No voice. No identity outside of husband and children. She existed to serve our family. She was invisible her entire life." Tomoe’s voice dropped. "I watched her disappear. Inch by inch. Year by year. Until there was nothing left but a woman in a kitchen who couldn’t remember who she was before marriage."

"You became a politician to not be her."

"Yes. I fought. I clawed. I became the youngest woman elected from my district. I built a career on being visible. On having a voice. On never being invisible." She laughed. One short, bitter sound. "And I succeeded so completely that I became invisible in a different way. Defined entirely by one role. No life outside it. No self outside it. I became my mother in a better suit."

*She’s describing the exact trap Elena identified. The vault. The cage. Different architecture. Same prisoner. Tomoe locked herself in a parliament instead of a kitchen. But she’s just as trapped.*

"You’re not empty, Tomoe."

Her head snapped up. The name landing like a slap.

"Don’t call me that."

"What should I call you?"

"Representative Ito. In this building." Her voice tight. Controlled. The walls trying to rebuild.

"And outside it?"

Silence. Long. The kind of silence that has weight and texture and temperature. She looked at him with eyes that held sixteen years of loneliness and no framework for expressing it.

"Outside it," she said quietly. "I don’t know. I haven’t been outside it in sixteen years."
