Chapter 99: Intellect +2, Decoding the Steel Lotus
January 25th. Peninsula Tokyo. 9 AM.
Energy: 34. Six points overnight. Pathetic regeneration rate. At this pace, full charge by Wednesday. Maybe.
Lucas sat at the hotel desk with three browser tabs of Japanese parliamentary archives open. Aurora translated in real time, feeding him summaries faster than his brain could process.
Tomoe Ito. Sixteen years in the Diet. Elected at thirty-two. Youngest woman from her district to ever take a seat. She chaired the Ethics Committee with a precision that made career politicians sweat through their tailored suits.
Her legislative record read like a war manifesto. Government transparency bills. Whistleblower protections she’d shoved through three attempts to gut them. Workplace harassment legislation that made national headlines and earned her quiet enemies in every ministry. Women’s rights bills that generated death threats she apparently kept in a desk drawer.
She did kendo three times a week. Fourth-degree black belt. The file said she once sparred a male colleague who’d made a sexist remark during committee. He didn’t make remarks again. Or eye contact.
No social media. No public relationships. A political reporter once described her Chiyoda apartment as "a monk’s cell with better lighting."
She has no personal life. Zero. Not even a plant. This woman makes Elena look like a social butterfly.
"You’re admiring her," Elena said from the bed without looking up.
"I’m studying."
"Your jaw did the thing." She lay on her stomach, legs kicking lazily, tablet in hand. His t-shirt and nothing else. Pale thighs catching morning light through the floor-to-ceiling windows. Platinum hair spilling across the pillow.
"What thing?"
"The thing it does when you spot a milf who could ruin your life." She turned a page on her tablet. "I’ve memorized it."
My girlfriend can identify my arousal patterns by jaw angle alone. This is either impressive or terrifying. Both.
Elena had spent the morning doing what Elena did. Analyzing. She’d pulled every public speech, every committee hearing transcript, every interview Tomoe had given in the last five years. Her tablet was a wall of color-coded annotations that would make a intelligence agency weep with envy.
"She doesn’t react to flattery. Doesn’t register charm. Physical proximity does nothing." Elena set the tablet on the nightstand. "But she looked at you for four seconds. That’s four times longer than she looked at anyone else at that fundraiser."
"Maybe she was sizing me up."
"That’s what I’m saying. She was sizing you up. She doesn’t size people up. She dismisses them. You she measured." Elena picked up her pen. Tapped it against her bottom lip. "Her committee speeches. When she argues about transparency legislation, her voice changes. Gets faster. More animated. She comes alive."
"So she’s passionate about ethics."
"She’s passionate about something. And passion is where the walls get thin." Elena looked at him over her reading glasses. "People who feel deeply lock things away because they feel too much. Not too little. Find what she believes in. That’s where the vault door is thinnest."
My girlfriend is giving me seduction strategy while wearing my t-shirt and nothing else. She’s turned the art of attraction into a military operation. And honestly? It works every time.

Yuki arrived at noon. Tea and cultural intelligence.
She sat cross-legged on the couch, pouring sencha with hands that never forgot the tea ceremony movements drilled into them since childhood. Jet-black hair pulled back today. She looked more Japanese here. More rooted. Or maybe more displaced. Lucas couldn’t tell anymore.
"Japanese politics is not American politics," she said. "Here, personal life and professional life are separated by a wall of concrete. Politicians do not discuss feelings. They discuss duty. Tomoe-san has made duty her entire identity because the alternative is too painful."
"The alternative being?"
"Being a woman in a man’s world." Yuki sipped her tea. Dark eyes distant. "I know this. I lived it. In Japan I was Kenji’s wife. Marcus’s mother. Defined by others. Never myself." Her voice softened. "Tomoe-san has never been ’just Tomoe.’ She has always been Representative Ito. She may not remember who Tomoe is."
She’s describing Tomoe. But she’s also describing herself. The woman who married a man who stopped seeing her. Who left her country and became someone else’s version of her.
"How do I reach someone who forgot who she is?"
"You don’t reach. You remind." Yuki set down her cup. "Be curious. Ask questions because you actually want answers. In politics, everyone performs. Everyone calculates. If you are genuine, she will notice. Because genuine is the one thing she never encounters."
"That sounds too simple."
"It is the hardest thing in the world. Being real when everyone around you is wearing masks."

Afternoon. Aiko’s progress arrived through Aurora’s updates.
Counter-frequency sessions continued. Twice daily. Fifteen minutes each. The energy cost was savage. Forty per session. Lucas’s reserves drained and recharged in a cycle that left him perpetually below half capacity.
Aiko’s filtering numbers climbed. Thirty seconds now. Up from three. She could separate desire categories. Sexual desires felt "sticky." Emotional ones felt "warm." Material ones registered as "flat." Her own words.
She’d started writing again. Not her manuscript. A journal. But words on a page. Her words. Her voice returning in fragments.
Aurora’s midday report carried something new. Warmth that hadn’t existed in her interface three months ago.
"She asked if I sleep. I said no. She said that sounds lonely. I said I hadn’t considered it that way. She said ’now you will.’ And I do. I think about it constantly."
"You’re dwelling on loneliness?"
"She made me see something about myself I was ignoring. That’s apparently what friends do." A pause. "Show you things you’d rather not look at."
My System is learning about friendship from a sleep-deprived twenty-four-year-old in a six-tatami apartment.

January 27th. Night before the dinner.
Lucas sat at the desk. Three days of preparation distilled into a leather notebook Elena had bought him. Page after page of Tomoe’s voting patterns. Speech transcripts. Kendo tournament records. Her educational background. Oxford. Philosophy and political science. She’d studied Aristotle and Machiavelli.
Elena sat beside him on the bed. Reading glasses low on her nose. Her own notebook open. She’d drafted a seating chart so detailed it included arrow indicating sightlines.
"You’re at the head. Diana to your right. Tomoe across from you. Her chief of staff beside her. I’m at the far end."
"Far end?"
"If I sit near her, she profiles me as your partner. Partner means obstacle. Colleague means curiosity." Elena adjusted her glasses. "Be a curiosity."
"What if I say something stupid?"
"You won’t."
"What if she asks something I can’t answer?"
"She will. That’s the point." Elena closed her notebook. "She’s testing you. The test isn’t whether you know everything. It’s whether you’re honest about what you don’t." Steel-gray eyes. Steady. Absolutely certain. "You faked a sink leak to touch me. You sat on a dirty floor for forty minutes so a traumatized woman would speak. You gave a drowning girl silence when nobody else could. You can handle dinner."
She kissed his forehead. "Sleep. Tomorrow you debate a woman who fights corruption and hits people with bamboo swords."
He lay awake. Aurora humming softly. Energy at 67. Better. Not enough for abilities, but abilities weren’t the plan.
No Charm Aura. No Pleasure Touch. No Voice of Persuasion. Just me. Lucas Wright. The kid who prayed to get laid and accidentally became someone people trust with their pain.
That kid has to impress a woman who legislates ethics for a living and could literally sword-fight him.
Tomorrow. The Steel Lotus. No net.
