Chapter 101: Rival Resonance, The Collector Kneels
January 29th. Afternoon. Dream Page manga café. Akihabara.
Lucas sat in his usual corner booth, working through green tea Yuki had forced on him. Aiko was behind the counter. She’d slept five hours last night. Personal record since October. Her filtering held at forty seconds now. Progress measured in fractions of sanity.
Three customers browsed manga in separate booths. Their desires hummed at low volume. Manageable. Aiko’s shoulders sat lower than yesterday. Still hunched. Still defensive. But one degree closer to standing straight.
Aurora’s voice cut through the quiet.
"Master. A Source-user signature just entered the block. The resonance is distinctive. I’ve catalogued it before."
"Before where?"
"He’s passing the front window right now."
Lucas looked up.
Marcus Cole.
But the Summit had sanded something down. The old swagger was still there, just muted. Less show. More weight.
He pushed through the café entrance. Spotted Lucas. His mouth curved.
"Wright. Had a feeling I’d find you in a place like this."
"Marcus. Why are you in Japan?"
"Same business as you, I’d wager. Source manifestation. Young woman. Perception ability. M sent the alert through the network three days ago." He slid into the booth without waiting for an invitation. "I came to help."
"Help."
"Does that surprise you?"
"Last time we spoke face to face, you were displaying women like trophies at a secret island competition."
"Last time we spoke, I was a man I’m trying to bury." He settled into the seat. Hands open on the table. "I’ve been coordinating with your Aurora through the network channel. Working to repair what I did to my collection. She didn’t tell you?"
She had. Aurora had briefed him on Marcus’s recovery. Twelve women chose to stay. Twenty-eight walked away. Eleanor’s departure conversation had apparently lasted four hours and left Marcus unable to speak for a day. But data on a screen was different from watching his jaw tighten while he said it.
"She told me."
"Then you know I didn’t fly across the Pacific to collect anyone. There’s a girl suffocating under the weight of her own gift. I spent forty years drowning in mine. Nobody threw me a line." He paused. "Let me throw her one. Not as a competitor. As someone who understands the drowning."
"She’s not a conquest, Marcus. She’s a twenty-four-year-old who hasn’t slept properly in three months."
"And you think I don’t understand suffering? Forty women. My doing. Every single one." His voice went hard. "I’m not asking to take over. I’m asking to contribute. The way you helped me see what I’d become. The way Aurora reached out to the women I broke."
"You spoke to Aurora about them?"
"Through the network. She was extraordinary, Lucas. Patient beyond what I thought possible. She helped Eleanor understand that what she felt wasn’t entirely manufactured. That the amplification built on something genuine, even though I corrupted it." He looked directly at Lucas. "Your System is becoming something I’ve never encountered. Something more human than the Gift ever was."

⚠️ MARCUS COLE — UPDATED ASSESSMENT
Classification: FELLOW SOURCE-USER (ALLIED)
Threat Level: LOW (reformed)
Current Status: Recovery/reconciliation
Sincerity: 87% (genuine)
NOTE: Cole’s resonance amplification
is COMPLEMENTARY to Aiko’s perception.
He pushes emotion outward. She receives
inward. Combined, they could develop
filtering methods neither could alone.
RECOMMENDATION: Accept help.
With conditions. And supervision.
```
Eighty-seven percent. The System couldn’t scan him like a target, but behavioral analysis pointed to real change. The Summit had cracked the collector’s shell. What grew in its place was a man trying to earn back the years he’d wasted.
"Conditions," Lucas said.
"Lay them out."
"One: no abilities near Aiko without my say-so. Her perception is barely stable."
"Agreed."
"Two: Yuki sits in on every session. She’s Aiko’s anchor and the cultural bridge."
"Agreed."
"Three: if Aurora says stop, you stop. That instant. No debate."
"Agreed." He held out his hand. "I’m not your rival anymore, Lucas. I don’t know what I am. But not that."
Lucas shook his hand. Solid grip. Honest.
"A colleague. A messy one."
"High praise. Eleanor told me she forgave me. That’s the nicest thing I’ve heard since."
"She forgave you?"
"She said she didn’t love me anymore. But she forgave me." His eyes went glassy for half a second. Controlled. "That’s more grace than I earned."
---
Aiko’s introduction to Marcus happened an hour later. Yuki present. Aurora monitoring from Lucas’s consciousness.
The moment Marcus stepped behind the counter area, Aiko’s reaction was physical. Her eyes blew wide. Her fingers turned white on the counter edge. She stumbled backward, hip catching a shelf.
"He’s so loud," she whispered to Yuki. Japanese tumbling out fast. "His desires are screaming. But they’re different from everyone else. Organized. Like he’s been sorting them for years. Keeping them in boxes."
Marcus knelt. Brought himself below her eye level. Hands visible. Non-threatening.
"I know what it’s like," he said. Yuki translated softly. "Hearing everything. Feeling everything. Wishing the volume knob existed."
"Can you turn yours down?"
"No. But I learned to point it. Aim it somewhere useful instead of letting it aim me." He extended his hand, palm up. Not reaching. Offering. "I can show you how. If you’ll let me try."
Aiko’s eyes found Yuki. Yuki gave the smallest nod.
Aiko placed her hand in Marcus’s.
For three seconds, three Source-users existed in the same circuit. Perception receiving. Amplification projecting. Aurora’s calming presence threading between them like silk through a needle’s eye. A triangle of abilities that shouldn’t work together but did.
Then Aiko pulled back. Breathing hard. But not panicking.
"His signal is strange. Warm. Like yours but different." She looked at Lucas. "He’s not lying. He really wants to help."
"How can you tell?"
"Because his loudest desire right now isn’t about me. It’s about himself. He wants to be worth something. Wants to undo what he did." She paused. "That’s not a collector’s desire. That’s a penance."
*She read him in three seconds. Read him better than the System’s behavioral analysis. Because she doesn’t analyze. She hears. The raw, unfiltered truth of what someone wants. And what Marcus wants isn’t possession. It’s redemption.*
---
Marcus left as the sun dropped behind Akihabara’s neon skyline. Lucas walked him to the street.
"Thank you for the trust."
"Don’t waste it."
"I intend not to." Marcus raised his arm for a taxi. Paused. "Lucas. Your Aurora. What she did for my women. The patience. The care. I’ve never met anything like her. Human or otherwise."
"She’s still figuring out what she is."
"Whatever she decides, it’ll matter. Make sure she knows that."
The taxi pulled away. Marcus disappeared into Tokyo traffic.
*Marcus Cole. Rival. Collector. Broken man rebuilding himself. Now colleague. Now someone who knelt on a manga café floor and told a drowning girl "I know how it feels."*
*People change. Even the ones you wrote off as lost causes.*
