Chapter 80: [81]: Bond Frozen at 18%, The Portland Weekend
Saturday. Portland International. 9:14 AM.
Rain smearing the terminal windows. The city outside was gray and green.
Lucas walked out with his backpack and found her standing by the arrivals sign.
Margaret Chen. Different. Better. The dark circles that used to live under her eyes were gone. She wore a green dress that ended above her knees, flat sandals, a light denim jacket. Her auburn hair was longer, falling past her shoulders in loose waves instead of the tired bun he remembered from Sunset Vista. She was still 5’6". Still athletic with curves that scrubs used to hide. Still had those 34D breasts the green dress could not fully conceal. Still had the scar on her chin from a childhood bike accident. Still had the mole on her left collarbone visible above the neckline.
But she looked rested. Alive. Like someone who had finally stopped running.
"Lucas."
"Maggie."
They hugged. Her arms around his neck. His hands on her waist. She smelled like vanilla shampoo and rain. Not lavender. Just Margaret.
"You look good," he said.
"So do you. Taller."
"Same height."
"No. You stand different. Straighter. Like you figured something out." She pulled back. Studied him with those dark brown nurse eyes. The ones that checked vitals and saw through bullshit. "Something changed."
She can feel it. The edges of something she can’t name.
"Coffee first. Interrogation second."
Her apartment was small. Clean. First floor of a converted house in a neighborhood full of trees and craft breweries. One bedroom. A kitchen that smelled like ginger.
Biscuit sat on a cat tree by the window. Orange. Round. Enormous. He looked at Lucas with the expression of a judge who had already reached a verdict.
"Hey, Biscuit."
Biscuit allowed one pat. Then retreated up the tree with the offended dignity of a cat who remembered exactly what Lucas had done with his owner’s underwear three months ago.
"He remembers you," Margaret said.
"He remembers my crimes."
"Cats are like that." She poured coffee. Sat across from him at a tiny table. "So. Tell me. Everything. The Summit. The women. Whatever makes you... different."
He told her. Not everything. Not the interface windows. Not the stats. Not the TP shop. But the truth underneath. The loneliness. The prayer. Something answering. The abilities that made women notice him. Want him. The fear that the power was using him more than he was using it.
Margaret listened. The way she always did. Completely. Without interrupting. Nurse training. Patient intake.
"You’re telling me you have a supernatural power that makes women want you."
"When you say it like that it sounds insane."
"It sounds insane any way you say it." She sipped her coffee. "But I felt it. At the pool. At dinner. Something I couldn’t explain. Like gravity shifted."
"And you left."
"I left because I felt it and it scared me. I didn’t understand it. I still don’t." She set down the cup. "But I’m sitting here. So."
They spent the day together. Walking Portland’s bridges. Eating at food trucks. A bookstore where she bought three novels and he bought nothing because Elena had banned him from buying more books until he finished the ones he had. They talked about her new hospital. The ER was better organized. Staff was kinder. She slept regular hours for the first time in years.
"I miss Sunset Vista," she admitted on the Hawthorne Bridge. Rain had stopped. Sun breaking through clouds. "The pool. The mailboxes. The terrible water pressure."
"You miss the laundry room."
"I miss the laundry room where a boy called me beautiful and I ran away." She looked at him. "I shouldn’t have run."
"Maybe you needed to. Maybe running was the right thing."
"Maybe." She leaned on the bridge railing. Looking at the water. "Lucas. Whatever this power is. Whatever makes you different. I need to know it’s not all that you are."
"It’s not."
"Prove it."
He turned to her. She turned to him. The sun setting behind the Portland skyline. Orange and pink on the water. Her auburn hair catching the light.
He kissed her. Soft. Careful. She responded. Her lips parting. Her hand on his chest. Then her hand on his neck. Pulling him closer. The kiss deepening. Her body pressing against his.
His mouth tastes like coffee and something sweet. My body is responding like I’m twenty again. I’m thirty-eight years old, standing on a public bridge, and my pussy is throbbing because a nineteen-year-old is kissing me. I left Portland to escape this feeling and here I am, back in it, soaking wet and wanting and terrified.
His hands found her waist. Pulled her against him. She felt him. Hard. Through his jeans. Against her stomach. Her nipples tightened under the green dress. No bra. She’d stopped wearing one at home. Bad decision for bridge kissing. Every sensation was raw. His chest against hers. Her breasts compressed between them. The heat building between her legs.
His hands are on my hips and I want them lower. I want them under my dress. I want his fingers inside me. I haven’t been touched in months. And this boy, this stupid beautiful boy who has five other women, is the only person who makes me feel like my body matters.
His hand slid down. Cupped her ass through the dress. She moaned into his mouth. Grinding against him. Her pussy pressing against his thigh. She was soaked. Could feel it. Wet through her underwear. Her body overriding every rational thought.
"Lucas..." she gasped against his lips.
"Maggie."
"Stop."
He stopped. Stepped back. Both breathing hard. Her lips swollen. His jeans doing nothing to hide his erection. The sunset painting them both in gold.
"I can’t." Her voice shook. "I want to. God, I want to. But I need to know this is real first."
"It is real."
"Is it? Or is it the thing you told me about? The power? The gift?" She touched her lips. Looking at her fingers like they belonged to someone else. "When you kissed me just now, I felt something. Something I felt at the pool. Something that doesn’t feel natural."
She can feel the Charm Aura. Even suppressed. Even passive. It leaks through.
"I turned it off. Whatever it is. I turned it off for this trip."
"Can you? Really? Can you turn off a part of yourself?"
He didn’t know. He thought he had. But Margaret was smart. Margaret noticed things.
She straightened her dress. Took a breath. "I’m not saying no, Lucas. I’m saying not yet. I need time. I need to know that what I feel is mine. Not yours. Not your power’s. Mine."
"Okay."
"Okay?" She looked surprised.
"Okay. I’ll wait."
"You’ll wait." A laugh. Short. Disbelieving. "You have five women waiting for you at home and you’ll wait for me?"
"Five. And yes."
"Five." She stared at him. "You’re insane."
"Probably."
"And I’m insane for wanting to see you again."
"Definitely."
She took his hand. Not sexual. Just holding. They walked off the bridge. Into Portland’s evening. Two insane people holding hands in the rain.

Sunday. Airport. 6 PM.
Margaret walked him to security. Biscuit’s orange fur on his jacket.
"Come back," she said.
"I will."
"And Lucas? Whoever those five women are. They’re lucky."
"They’re complicated."
"Lucky and complicated. Same thing."
She kissed his cheek. Walked away. Didn’t look back.
His phone buzzed as the plane reached cruising altitude.
Margaret: Hey. I know you’re probably in the air. But I wanted to say thank you. For being honest. For not pushing. For being the kid who faked a sink leak.
I think I might be falling for you. Which is terrifying and stupid and probably a mistake.
But I’ve made worse mistakes.
See you soon?
—M
He read it three times. His chest tight.
She’s falling for me.
Aurora whispered: "Master. She said ’not yet.’ That means ’eventually.’ And she said she’s falling for you."
"I know."
"That’s the most valuable progress you’ve ever earned. And it’s not even in the System."
"I know, Aurora."
Elena’s text arrived next. How was Portland?
Complicated. Good. I’ll tell you everything tonight.
Did you kiss her?
Yes.
Did you sleep with her?
No.
Long pause. Then: Good. Come home, Lucas.
On my way.
