Chapter 74: [75]: Champion’s Reward

Sponsored

Day Eight. Evening. Grand Hall.

The ceremony was shorter than expected. M stood on stage. Said his name. The room reacted. Some clapped. Some scowled. Marcus Cole sat in the front row with his hands folded and his jaw tight enough to crack walnuts.

"Not because he accumulated the most points. Not because he conquered the most targets. Because he demonstrated genuine connection despite extraordinary ability." M’s voice carried across the marble. "He wins because he was honest when honesty cost him something."

She extended a silver case. Inside: a card. Blank except for a single phone number.

"The Summit Network. Resources. Protection. Access." She closed the case. "Use it wisely."

Marcus approached after. Not angry. Assessing. That practiced smile dialed down to something almost genuine.

"You beat me."

"M chose me. Different thing."

"Same thing." He extended his hand. Grip firm. Dry. "Next year, Wright. I won’t make the same mistake."

"What mistake?"

"Thinking honesty was weakness." He released the handshake. "It’s not. I forgot that. You reminded me." He walked away.

Elena appeared first. Ice Queen melted. Tears on her cheeks. She didn’t care who saw.

"You won."

"We won."

She punched his arm. Hard. "Don’t get sentimental. I’m still furious about the Isabella night."

"Point noted."

Victoria was taking notes. Actual notes. In a notebook. At a secret society victory party.

"A blog post?"

"no." Diana replied.

Yuki was already texting someone about mochi ingredients. "Lucas-kun champion! I make celebration mochi! Very special! Gold leaf!"

Diana checked her phone. "My stock went up three percent from the association. So. Thank you."

Sarah raised her hand. "Does this mean I’m dating the Summit champion? Can I put that on my resume?"

"Absolutely not."

Isabella found him last. Kissed his cheek. Brown eyes warm.

"Congratulations."

"I didn’t conquer you."

"No. You did something better." She squeezed his hand. "When you’re back in the real world. Look me up."

"That sounds like you’re asking me on a date."

"It sounds like that because it is that. I’m a diplomat. I know how to ask things."

Back at Villa Seven. Midnight. Celebration.

Yuki had made mochi. Gold leaf on top. It was transcendent. Diana provided champagne that cost more per bottle than Lucas’s monthly grocery budget. Victoria got tipsy and started reciting Neruda poems. Sarah fell asleep on the couch with her shoes on.

Elena watched it all. Arms crossed. Wine in hand. That little furrow between her eyebrows gone for the first time in a week.

"You look happy," Lucas said.

"I look drunk. Different thing."

"Same thing."

She almost smiled.

The champagne flowed. Diana’s second bottle. Victoria’s third glass. Yuki had switched to sake she’d apparently smuggled through airport security in a water bottle. Elena was on wine. Sarah had woken up and joined in with enthusiasm that exceeded her tolerance.

By 1 AM, the villa had achieved a specific frequency of drunk. The kind where laughter came too easy and personal space had collapsed and someone was always touching someone.

Victoria was lying on the couch with her head on Sarah’s lap. "I’m just saying. Neruda understood body as landscape. ’I want to do with you what spring does with the cherry trees.’ That’s not metaphor. That’s instruction."

"Prof. Sterling," Sarah said, patting her head. "You’re slurring Neruda."

"Poetry is meant to be slurred. Sobriety kills meter."

Diana sat in the armchair. Legs crossed. Whiskey now. Ice clinking. She’d loosened her collar. First time Lucas had ever seen her look less than fully armored. Her cheeks were flushed. She kept looking at him over the rim of her glass.

Yuki was on the floor. Cross-legged. Sake cup in hand. Humming. She’d removed her cardigan at some point. The tank top underneath left little to imagination. Her breasts pressed against the thin fabric with every breath. She caught Lucas looking. Smiled. That knowing smile.

Elena sat beside him. Close. Her hand on his thigh. She’d finished her wine and moved to Diana’s champagne. Her cheeks were pink. Her eyes soft. The Ice Queen thoroughly melted.

"You know what I think?" Elena said. Loud enough for the room.

"God. Here we go," Victoria murmured.

"I think our champion deserves a proper reward." She squeezed his thigh. "Not mochi. Not champagne. A real reward."

Diana set down her glass. "Define real."

Elena stood. Walked to the center of the room. Addressed the room like she was presenting a property lease.

"We’ve spent a week on an island watching our boyfriend compete against forty men to prove he’s the best at loving us. He won. He’s ours. And I think—" She pulled her sweater over her head. Standing in her bra. 36DD straining the clasp. "—we should show him what winning feels like."

Silence.

Then Yuki stood. Dropped her cardigan fully. Tank top off. Standing in a sports bra and jeans. "Yuki agree. Champion deserves reward. Yuki very generous."

Victoria sat up. Glasses askew. "This is... academically unprecedented. I should take notes."

"Victoria," Elena said. "If you take notes, I will end you."

"Right. No notes." She removed her glasses. Set them on the nightstand. Started unbuttoning her blouse. "Experiential learning only."

Diana stood. Smoothed her suit jacket. Removed it. Folded it. Placed it on the chair. Because Diana Blackwood folded her clothes even when she was about to participate in a champagne-fueled victory orgy.

"I didn’t come to this island to lose," Diana said. She unbuttoned her blouse. "In anything."

Sarah looked around. "I’m... I’m the newest. Is this—I mean, is this what we do? Group—"

"Sarah." Diana took her hand. "You’re part of this. You earned it." She pulled Sarah to her feet. "And that dress looks expensive. Take it off before someone ruins it."

Sarah swallowed. Pulled the zipper down. Stepped out of the dress. Stood there in underwear. Looking terrified and thrilled.

Five women. Undressing in his villa. For him.
