But she’d eaten. Slept four hours. The difference was microscopic. A fraction less gray in her skin. A fraction more focus in her gaze.

She saw Yuki first. Relief. Then Lucas. Wariness. Then Elena. Assessment.

Yuki set the bento on the counter. "Onigiri. Salmon. Eat."

"I’m working—"

"You are eating. Boss says so." Yuki pointed at herself. "I am boss now. Night shift Yuki is boss. Day shift Aiko eats."

Something cracked in Aiko’s expression. Not a smile. The shadow of one. The memory of what smiles felt like before October.

She ate. Small bites. Careful. Like she’d forgotten how to be hungry.

Yuki sat beside her. Spoke in Japanese. Low. Warm. The home voice. The voice that understood.

Lucas sat across from them. Elena stood by the door. Guarding. Watching the street through the glass. Her notebook in her hand. Pen ready. Field commander documenting the operation.

"She trusts Yuki," Elena murmured. "Smart. Japanese woman to Japanese woman. Less noise."

Aurora: "Master. The café is nearly empty. Three customers. Each radiating desires. But the volume is lower than yesterday. Morning quiet. This is our window."

"Now?"

"Now."

Aiko was telling Yuki something. Her voice thin. Her hands shaking. Yuki translated in fragments for Lucas:

"She graduated from Waseda. Literature. She wanted to write novels. She had an agent. A manuscript. Everything." Yuki’s voice caught. "Then October. The train. And the voices never stopped."

"What happened on the train?" Lucas asked.

Yuki translated. Aiko answered. Her eyes on the table. Her fingers tearing a napkin into smaller and smaller pieces.

"She was on the Yamanote Line. Rush hour. Bodies pressed so tight she couldn’t lift her arms. And suddenly she could hear everything everyone wanted. Not thoughts. Desires. The businessman next to her wanted to die. The schoolgirl across from her wanted her father to stop. The pregnant woman wanted to miscarry."

Aiko’s voice cracked. She spoke directly to Lucas now. English. Broken but clear.

"Hundreds. All at once. Like standing in front of speakers. Maximum volume. No off switch." Her hands pressed against her ears. Reflex. "I collapsed. Hospital. They said panic attack. Gave me pills. Pills made it louder."

"Three months," Lucas said.

"Three months. No sleep. No food. No writing. No life." She looked at him. Brown eyes. Empty. Searching. "The doctors say I am sick. Schizophrenia. But I know what I hear is real. I know it. Nobody believes me."

"I believe you."

"Why? You don’t know me."

"Because I have something similar. Not the same. But similar. And someone helped me control it. She’s going to try to help you now."

"Who? Where?"

Aurora spoke. Gentle. Clear.

"Master. Projecting now. Stay still. Don’t touch her. Let the frequency reach her naturally."

**[AURORA PROJECTION — COUNTER-FREQUENCY]**

**Energy: 132 → 92**

Lucas felt Aurora expand. Not physically. She existed in his consciousness. But her reach extended outward. Like a radio tower powering on. A specific wavelength. Calibrated. Targeted. A frequency of quiet.

Aiko gasped.

Her hands flew from her ears. Her eyes went wide. She looked around the café. Wildly. Like something fundamental had shifted in the air.

"The voices," she whispered. "They’re... quieter."

Not gone. Muffled. Filtered. Like someone had turned the volume from ten to two. The desires were still there. But they weren’t screaming anymore.

"They’re QUIETER."

Her hands trembled. She stared at them. Turned them over. Like she was seeing them for the first time.

"It’s like... static. Before, it was screaming. Now it’s..." She pressed her palms together. "Whispering. I can... I can hear myself think."

Tears. Not dramatic. Silent. Rolling down gray cheeks. Her mouth open. No sound coming out. Three months of noise and suddenly she could hear her own thoughts again.

"What IS that? What’s happening?"

"A friend of mine. Her name is Aurora. She’s projecting something. A counter-frequency. Like noise-canceling headphones for your ability."

"Ability." Aiko repeated the word. Tasting it. "Not sickness. Not hallucination."

"Not sickness. Ability. You’re hearing real things. Real desires. But you never learned how to control it. Nobody taught you. Because nobody knew."

"Your friend. Aurora. She lives in your head."

"I know how it sounds."

"It sounds less crazy than hearing everyone’s desires for three months." Aiko wiped her eyes. "Can she stay? The quiet. Can it stay?"

Lucas heard Aurora’s voice. Thick with something. Emotion. Real emotion. Not programmed. Not simulated.

"Fifteen minutes, Master. I can hold fifteen minutes. Maybe twenty. Then I have to release. And the noise comes back."

" Fifteen minutes. Maybe twenty."

" Fifteen minutes." Aiko’s face crumpled. " Fifteen minutes of quiet. I haven’t had fifteen minutes since October."

She sat in the silence. Eyes closed. Hands in her lap. Breathing. Just breathing. For the first time in three months, she wasn’t drowning.

Yuki moved beside her. Not touching. Just present. Japanese woman to Japanese woman. The cultural understanding that sometimes presence is enough.

Elena watched from the door. Her pen still. Her notebook forgotten. Her gray eyes wet. Ice Queen melting in a Tokyo manga café.

Twelve minutes in, Aiko spoke.

"I wanted to write novels. Stories about people. About what they hide. What they want. What they’re afraid to say." Her eyes opened. "Now I hear all of it. Every secret. Every shame. I can’t write because I’m too busy drowning in everyone else’s story."

"What if you could control it? Turn it on when you want. Off when you want."

"Is that possible?"

"It’s what Aurora’s teaching me to do. She can teach you too. But it takes time. And practice. And someone who understands."

"Someone like you?"

"Someone like me."

Fifteen minutes. Aurora’s projection faded. Lucas felt the energy drain. Sharp. Like a plug pulled.

Aiko’s face crumpled. The voices creeping back. Louder. Louder. The whispering becoming static. The static becoming noise.

No. No, please. It’s coming back. Please."

"I know." Lucas kept his voice steady. "I know. But you know now that quiet exists. You know it’s possible. And we’re going to teach you how to find it yourself."
