Chapter 626 - 411: Killing Three Birds with One Stone, Chen Yuan Locks Down the Two Sisters (18)
In the end, Chen Yuan’s heart softened. He didn’t use this as leverage to force Jiangg Ning to submit.
This wasn’t because Jiangg Ning’s words, "Forcing me to marry you won’t make me happy," had moved him.
If things truly became desperate, he wouldn’t care about happiness. He’d marry both sisters first and deal with the rest later.
But things hadn’t reached that point yet.
Jiangg Ning was in pain right now. The image of her tear-streaked face from their argument was still vivid in his mind. Under these circumstances, he didn’t want to add fuel to the fire.
Seeing her so upset made him feel bad, too.
Since this was a matter of a lifetime, Chen Yuan could only tell himself to be patient. He silently cheered himself on. ’One day, I’ll win her over completely and she’ll marry me of her own free will!’
He silently psyched himself up.
"Sometimes I wonder if I’m being too harsh on you..." Jiangg Ning brushed a strand of hair from her temple and said softly, her head bowed. "I don’t actually want to be cold all the time. But when I think back to when we were dating, the resentment is even harder to control."
"So you admit you’ve been giving me the cold shoulder lately?" Chen Yuan said, displeased.
"That’s because you’d only just started trying to make it up to me! My mood had barely improved, and then you flew off to Tokyo to be with Jiangg Yao!"
"Well, I couldn’t just let her go alone," Chen Yuan said, a look of innocence on his face.
"Exactly! Why does your love always have to be split in half for someone else? That’s what makes me so uncomfortable. I know you don’t think you’re wrong, but I just can’t get over this hump..." At this point, Jiangg Ning spoke from the heart. "Let’s have a proper talk about this later. Let’s not talk about it now."
Chen Yuan was stunned for a moment when he heard this.
If she was willing to talk, it meant the door in her heart that had been bolted shut was finally creaking open.
All his efforts were finally showing some results.
It really... hadn’t been easy.
"Then we’ll talk later. First, let’s deal with this company’s mess," Chen Yuan said, collecting himself. "Step one, we need to sort out all the compensation payments. What your mom said might not be the whole truth. It’s better to check everything ourselves to make sure nothing’s been hidden."
"I agree."
"Contact the head of your company’s finance department and have her come over. We need to take all the ledgers and documents with us. It’s impossible to go through them here; it’s too chaotic."
"Then let’s take them to my place," Jiangg Ning said, nodding quickly in agreement as she stood up. "I’ll go find someone to help us move everything right away."
As soon as she finished speaking, Chen Yuan started tidying up the office. He began searching for the core documents related to the company’s collapse. He needed to know how Jiangg Ruxue and the finance department had deceived the shareholders with fake financial reports, how they had secured funding from investors to launch the new project, and the reasons for the project’s failure.
Only by giving this information to a lawyer could they accurately determine the nature of the situation.
Any room for negotiation would also have to be dug out from within these files.
The office was filled with the incessant RUSTLE of flipping pages.
In this deserted company, amid the wreckage, the hardworking group of Jiangg Ning and Chen Yuan were some of the few who willingly stayed behind to clean up the mess. As the saying goes, you see who your true friends are in times of trouble. In the end, out of a huge company, only three department heads and a dozen or so veteran employees were willing to help.
If Jiangg Ruxue, who had been taken away, knew about this, she would probably feel a storm of complex emotions.
"This is all of it. I’ve grabbed everything we need to take."
"HUP—" Minister Dong from the after-sales department nearly stumbled as he lifted a box. It was incredibly dense. "Damn, this is heavy!"
"Mine’s not light either," Minister Liu from the administration department said, patting the box in her hands. "Wait for me when you go down. I have to grab the computer; a lot of files are saved on it."
"Don’t worry, Minister, I’ll get it for you," an employee offered.
"No need to call me Minister anymore. The company’s finished, so there’s no hierarchy now," Minister Liu joked, still in good spirits. "The driver’s gone too. Here are the keys. Go down to the garage and bring the black minivan around to wait for us."
"Okay," the employee, a man in his fifties, agreed.
The group carried the boxes in their arms and on their shoulders. Even Jiangg Ning, who had never done much heavy lifting, was hugging two large boxes. She could barely see her feet as she walked, forced to follow closely behind Chen Yuan. The worst part was that there was no elevator, so they had to carry all these heavy boxes down the stairs.
It got to the point where Chen Yuan wanted to call a moving company to take all this stuff to Jiangg Ning’s house.
When he voiced this idea, Jiangg Ning was leaning against the wall, panting heavily, a fine sheen of sweat beading on her nose.
"We don’t need a moving company. This is nothing to get fussy about. I’m totally fine... I can even make two more trips, no problem."
Without another moment’s rest, Jiangg Ning hoisted the large box back into her arms.
When had Chen Yuan ever seen this side of Jiangg Ning? Ever since they first met at Lanjing University, her every move had exuded the refined grace of a young lady from a wealthy, prominent family. Though her personality was anything but flashy, her clothes, her style, and the expensive handbags she carried revealed a lifestyle worlds apart from that of an ordinary person.
She had never seemed touched by the grit of the mundane world; there wasn’t a hint of commonness about her. The words "unworldly elegance" were the perfect description for her.
Now, her clothes were smudged with grime from the cardboard boxes, her forehead was dotted with fine beads of sweat, and a streak of gray marked her left cheek—whether from wiping it with the back of her hand or something else, he didn’t know.
