Chapter 227: Vs The Paladin

The stadium was a wall of sound.

Nathan stood at the edge of the arena, Moonlight in his grip, the roar of sixty thousand spectators pressing against his ears. The lights were blinding. The screens overhead showed his face, Elise’s face, Garrett’s, Dillon’s, Smithy’s. The bracket on the far wall displayed the semifinal matchup in bold letters.

Central Federation vs. Northern Coalition.

Across the arena, Arthur Reinhardt stood like a statue. His tower shield was planted at his feet, its surface etched with runes that pulsed with soft golden light. His sword was still sheathed. His expression was calm.

Behind him, his team waited—Bjorn Eriksson, the Berserker, his massive axe resting on his shoulder; Astrid Larsen, the Ranger, her bow already drawn; Freya Nilsson, the Frost Mage, ice crystals swirling around her staff; and Erik Johansson, the Cleric, his hands glowing with healing light.

The referee’s orb-face appeared above the arena. It showed a neutral expression.

"Semifinal match. Central Federation versus Northern Coalition. Teams, take your positions. The match begins in ten seconds."

Arthur looked at Nathan. "I’ve been waiting for this."

"Same here," Nathan said.

The orb-face shifted to a countdown. Ten. Nine. Eight.

Nathan’s party moved into formation. Garrett and Red at the front—the Mad-Sheep’s crimson wool already hardening into armored plates, its four black eyes fixed on the enemy line. Dillon and Cloudy in the air. Elise and the Frost Golem on the left. Smithy and his Void Eel on the right. Mirko, Kuro, and Shiro flanking Nathan. Ororo behind them all, staff ready.

Three. Two. One.

The match began.

---

Arthur didn’t charge.

He planted his feet and raised his shield. His team formed a defensive shell behind him. Bjorn stood at his left, axe ready. Astrid nocked an arrow. Freya raised a wall of ice. Erik’s healing light washed over them all.

They weren’t going to attack first. They were going to wait.

Nathan analyzed with [Hunter’s Insight]. Arthur’s defense was layered—his shield, his armor, his mana, his skills. Everything was built for endurance. He could outlast anyone.

"Don’t rush him," Nathan said. "We break the formation first. Dillon, Cloudy—target their Ranger. Elise—freeze their Cleric. Garrett—hold Arthur’s attention. Smithy—disrupt their Mage. Mirko, Kuro, Shiro—wait for my signal."

The party moved.

Dillon and Cloudy launched into the air, lightning arcing toward Astrid. The Ranger rolled aside, firing arrows in return. Cloudy intercepted them with bursts of static, her scales crackling with every discharge.

Elise summoned the Frost Golem. It charged toward Erik, the Cleric. Freya intercepted with a wall of ice. The two Frost Golems clashed—ice against ice, crystal against crystal. The impact sent shockwaves through the arena. Frost spread across the floor in jagged patterns.

Garrett charged Arthur with Red beside him. The Mad-Sheep’s hooves cracked the stone as it ran, its wool fully hardened, its horns lowered. Volcan swung in a wide arc. Arthur raised his shield. The mace clanged against it, sparks flying. Red slammed into Arthur’s legs a heartbeat later, horns driving into his greaves. Arthur didn’t move. He didn’t flinch. He just stood there, his golden eyes fixed on Garrett’s.

Smithy’s Void Eel phased through the ground and wrapped around Freya’s legs. She stumbled, losing concentration. Her ice wall cracked. Elise’s Frost Golem shattered through it, its frozen fist slamming into Erik’s barrier. The Cleric staggered.

"Now!" Nathan called.

---

Mirko activated [Gigantification].

She swelled to twelve feet, her armor expanding, Dragon’s Fang blazing with golden fire. She charged Arthur from the left, her massive blade carving a trench in the arena floor.

Kuro activated [Invisibility] and vanished. She reappeared behind Erik, her Veilweave Daggers already descending. [Shadow Lock] activated. Shadows erupted from the ground, wrapping around the Cleric’s legs and arms, pinning him in place.

Shiro activated [Dragonification]. Golden scales spread across her skin. Wings of fire erupted from her back. She launched herself at Bjorn, the Berserker, her [Tyrant Dragon Fist] detonating against his chest. The shockwave sent him skidding backward, his boots carving grooves in the stone.

Garrett pressed the attack. Volcan swung again and again. Each strike cracked Arthur’s shield but didn’t break it. Red circled behind the Paladin, looking for an opening. When Arthur raised his sword to counter Garrett, Red charged. The Mad-Sheep slammed into the back of Arthur’s knee, horns digging into the joint. Arthur’s leg buckled—just for a moment.

Ororo raised her staff. [Healing Field] washed over the party, closing their wounds. [Negate Ailment] absorbed Freya’s frost debuffs before they could land.

Arthur finally moved.

He stepped forward. His shield glowed with golden light. He slammed it into the ground. The arena shook. A shockwave rippled outward, knocking Mirko back. Garrett stumbled. Red was flung sideways, tumbling across the stone. Arthur drew his sword. The blade was pure light—not metal, not energy, but something in between. It hummed with power.

"You’ve broken my formation," Arthur said. "But you haven’t broken me."

He charged.

---

Arthur was a force of nature.

Mirko met him head-on, Dragon’s Fang swinging. Arthur raised his shield. The blade clanged against it, sparks erupting. He didn’t stop. He kept walking. He pushed forward, his shield a battering ram. Mirko was forced back, her boots sliding across the stone.

Garrett flanked from the right, Volcan erupting. Red charged beside him, horns lowered. Arthur took the mace hit on his armor. The thermal pulse scorched the metal but didn’t penetrate. Red slammed into his side. The Mad-Sheep’s horns scraped against his armor, leaving deep gouges. Arthur didn’t even flinch. He backhanded Red away. The Mad-Sheep tumbled but scrambled back to its feet, snorting.

Dillon dove from above, [Thunder Edge] crackling. Arthur raised his sword. The lightning arced toward him—and the blade absorbed it. The light intensified. Arthur swung. Dillon barely dodged, the tip of the blade grazing his shoulder.

Kuro appeared behind Arthur, daggers flashing. [Shadow Lock] activated. Shadows wrapped around his legs. Arthur flexed. The shadows shattered. He turned, his sword sweeping in a wide arc. Kuro vanished into the shadows just in time.

Shiro attacked from the air, [Tyrant Dragon Fist] blazing. Arthur raised his shield. The impact cracked the shield but didn’t break it. He countered with a thrust. Shiro twisted mid-air, her wings carrying her out of reach.

Garrett and Red attacked together. Volcan swung high. Red charged low. Arthur blocked the mace with his shield and kicked Red away. The Mad-Sheep tumbled again but rose, its four eyes blazing with fury.

Smithy’s Void Eel phased through Arthur’s armor, trying to disrupt his mana. Arthur grunted. His golden light flickered. But he didn’t slow down.

Ororo raised her staff, [Healing Field] washing over the party. [Negate Ailment] absorbed the frost spells Freya kept throwing.

Arthur reached Nathan.

"You’re the strategist," Arthur said. "But strategy means nothing if you can’t execute."

Nathan fired [Mana Arrows]. Arthur blocked them with his shield. Nathan used [Nimble Feet] to dodge Arthur’s sword strikes—left, right, back, left again. He used [Multi-Shadow Clones]. Four identical Nathans appeared, scattering across the arena.

Arthur closed his eyes.

He sensed. He listened. He struck.

The clones vanished one by one. Arthur’s blade stopped inches from the real Nathan’s throat.

Nathan used the Overlord’s copied skill. [Impenetrable Fortress] . A barrier flared around him. Arthur’s blade cracked it but didn’t break through.

Arthur’s eyes narrowed. "That skill. It belongs to your Knight. But you’re not a Knight."

Nathan didn’t answer. He charged [Focus Shot]. Sixty seconds.

Arthur raised his shield. Nathan released. The arrow blazed through the air. It struck the shield. The shield cracked. But it didn’t break.

Arthur smiled. "You’re strong. But you’re not strong enough."

---

Arthur raised his sword. The light intensified until it was blinding. He spoke, his voice echoing through the arena.

"I am the shield of the Northern Coalition. I have held the line against monsters, against villains, against gods. And I have never fallen."

He activated his hidden ability. [Unbreakable Will] .

His body glowed with golden light. His wounds closed. His mana restored. His defense doubled.

"I cannot be killed," Arthur said. "I cannot be broken. I can only be outlasted. And no one has ever outlasted me."

The party attacked again. Mirko’s Dragon’s Fang bounced off his shield. Garrett’s Volcan cracked but didn’t break. Red’s horns scraped but didn’t pierce. Dillon’s lightning arced across his armor but didn’t stop him. Kuro’s daggers found gaps but didn’t draw blood. Shiro’s dragon fire scorched but didn’t burn.

Ororo’s [Healing Field] kept the party alive, but it was a losing battle. Arthur was too strong. Too durable. Too relentless.

Nathan watched his party struggle. His mind raced. He was running out of options.

He remembered Long Wei’s words. "You used skills that aren’t yours." "The Overlord class."

He had been holding back. He had only used the copied skills—the ones he’d taken from his summons. But the Overlord had another ability. One he had never used. One he had been afraid to use.

He closed his eyes. He reached deep within himself. He touched the power the Shepherd had given him.

A system message appeared in his vision—visible only to him.

[Ding! Class Skill Unlocked: Overlord’s Authority — Temporarily enhances the performance of a chosen weapon. Enhancement scales with magical power and weapon rank.]

Nathan opened his eyes. They were glowing gold.

Arthur paused. His eyes widened. "What..."

Nathan didn’t speak. He didn’t declare anything. He just raised Moonlight.

He activated the skill.

[Overlord’s Authority] .

Golden light erupted from Moonlight. The bow transformed—its limbs glowing with power, its string humming with energy. It was no longer just a B-Rank weapon. It was something more. Something that could break the unbreakable.

Arthur raised his shield. His expression shifted from confidence to something else. Something like respect.

"Interesting," Arthur said. "You’ve been hiding something."

Nathan didn’t answer. He drew the string back. The arrow that formed wasn’t mana or steel. It was something else entirely—a bolt of pure golden light.

Arthur braced himself.

Nathan released.

The arrow crossed the arena in a blink. It struck Arthur’s shield. The shield shattered.

Arthur stared at the broken pieces. Then at Nathan. Then he smiled.

"Finally," Arthur said. "A worthy opponent."

He raised his sword. The light intensified. He charged.

Nathan drew another arrow. The golden light blazed.

They collided.
