Chapter 232: Spirits Unleashed

Amara was no longer standing in the arena. She was hovering above it, suspended in a storm of ancient light.

The air pressure inside the stadium was suffocating. The ambient mana swirling around her was so dense it created a localized weather system, kicking up a cyclone of dust and loose stone. Her skin, now the color of polished obsidian and etched with molten gold tattoos, pulsed with a rhythm that felt less like a heartbeat and more like a war drum.

Nathan activated [Hunter’s Insight], but immediately had to squeeze his eyes shut. Looking directly at Amara’s mana signature was like staring into the sun. She wasn’t channeling a dozen spirits anymore; she had physically merged with them. Centuries of martial arts, spellcasting, and battle instincts were currently crammed into one human vessel.

"She’s redlining," Elise yelled over the roar of the wind, her breath pluming white as she raised her staff. "A human body can’t contain a legion! She’s going to burn herself out!"

"Then we don’t try to beat her!" Nathan shouted back, fighting to keep his footing against the gale. "We outlast her! Full defensive formation! Do not engage unless she forces it!"

The party moved instantly. Garrett and Red planted themselves like heavy boulders at the front. Mirko stepped ahead of them, slamming her giant blade into the earth and activating [Impenetrable Fortress]. A massive, golden dome flared to life over the team. Kuro melted into the shadows of the dome, while Shiro folded her wings, staying fiercely grounded.

Then, Amara moved.

She didn’t run. She simply ceased to be in one place and existed in another.

The air cracked like a whip. Amara appeared directly in front of Mirko’s golden dome. She didn’t swing her bone staff. She simply pulled her fist back—her arm flickering with the translucent overlay of a massive, heavily muscled tribal warrior—and punched the barrier.

The golden dome shattered like thin glass.

The kinetic shockwave blew Mirko entirely off her feet, sending the twelve-foot-tall Knight crashing into the arena wall. Before the shards of golden light even hit the ground, Amara was already moving through the gap.

Garrett roared, swinging Volcan in a desperate, horizontal arc to protect the backline. Red charged alongside him, horns lowered.

Amara didn’t even look at them. She caught the head of the red-hot mace with her bare hand. The metal hissed against her palm, but she didn’t flinch. With a flick of her wrist, she redirected Garrett’s own momentum, sending him crashing heavily into Red. She followed up with a sweeping kick that generated a blade of pressurized wind, hurling them both across the stone floor.

"She’s too fast!" Dillon yelled, desperately backpedaling while firing a rapid volley of lightning arcs.

Amara didn’t dodge. She stepped directly into the lightning. The electricity spiraled down her arms and absorbed directly into her golden tattoos.

"The storm spirits thank you for the meal, boy," her voice boomed, overlapping with a dozen different octaves—men, women, young, and ancient.

She snapped her fingers. The absorbed lightning fired right back out, striking Dillon in the chest and dropping him out of the air. Cloudy shrieked, diving to protect her rider, but Amara simply raised a hand, binding the wyvern mid-dive in a net of shimmering, spiritual chains.

Ororo’s [Healing Field] pulsed desperately, washing cool, green light over the battered party. But Amara was a force of nature. She found Kuro hiding in the darkest corner of the arena’s shadow, physically grabbing the rogue by the collar and throwing her into the light. She caught Elise’s Frost Golem by the arm, flash-melting its icy joints with a burst of ancestral fire, and shattered it with a single palm strike.

Nathan’s heart pounded against his ribs. He was burning through his stamina just trying to track her movements. He triggered [Nimble Feet] and [Multi-Shadow Clones], scattering four identical copies of himself across the battlefield to draw her aggro.

Amara appeared in the center of the clones. She didn’t guess. She just slammed her staff into the ground. A shockwave of pure spiritual gravity crushed all four clones into smoke and pinned the real Nathan to his knees.

"You fight with borrowed power," Amara’s legion-voice echoed as she walked slowly toward him. "But I do not borrow. We are one. You are alone in your mind, Archer. I have a hundred lifetimes of war in mine."

Nathan fought against the crushing gravity, his muscles screaming. His mana was tapped. His party was scattered, bruised, and bleeding.

He looked up at her, gritting his teeth. "I’m not alone."

Across the arena, Garrett spat a glob of blood onto the stone and forced himself to his feet. Volcan flared back to life. Red shook the dizziness from its head and growled. Mirko pushed out of the rubble, her golden armor dented, her eyes burning with fury. Kuro phased back out of the light. Dillon leaned heavily on Cloudy, sparks dancing across his knuckles. Elise stepped forward, her staff radiating absolute zero.

Amara stopped, her glowing white eyes narrowing.

"Now!" Nathan roared.

The counterattack was a symphony of desperation.

Elise struck first, slamming her staff down and freezing the very moisture in the air around Amara, turning the atmosphere into a thick, blinding fog of ice. Smithy’s Void Eel erupted from the ground directly beneath Amara’s feet, screeching a frequency that violently disrupted the ambient mana, causing her golden tattoos to violently flicker.

Dillon and Cloudy unleashed a blinding flashbang of pure light, removing Amara’s vision for a fraction of a second. In that tiny window, Kuro materialized, throwing a specialized [Shadow Lock]—not at Amara’s body, but at the bone staff in her hand, pinning the weapon to the floor.

Shiro dropped from the sky like a meteor, her [Tyrant Dragon Fist] colliding with Garrett’s upward swing of Volcan. The combined fire and kinetic force slammed into Amara’s flank, finally breaking her immovable stance and staggering her backward.

Nathan didn’t hesitate. He pulled Moonlight’s string back so hard the limbs groaned. He didn’t use an elemental arrow. He triggered [Overlord’s Authority].

The bow transformed in his hands, thickening, glowing with the terrifying, heavy gold light of a conqueror. He channeled the absolute last drop of his mana pool into the string. Sixty seconds of charge compressed into a single, blinding point of light.

Amara looked up, ripping her staff free from the shadows. The spirits inside her screamed in warning.

Nathan let it fly.

The arrow tore through the air, carving a trench in the stone floor beneath it. It slammed directly into Amara’s chest. The explosion of gold and white light blinded the entire stadium. The shockwave blew Nathan backward, sending him skidding across the dirt until he hit the outer wall.

The arena fell dead silent. The dust slowly began to clear.

Nathan gasped for air, his vision swimming. He forced his head up.

Amara was on one knee. The golden tattoos had faded back to black ink. The ethereal glow was gone. Her staff was cracked down the middle. For a second, Nathan thought they had done it.
