My Overpowered Bunny Girls

Chapter 104: Aftermath (2)

Nathan stared up at the sterile ceiling. Dozens of collapses. Tens of thousands of casualties. And Clamour, standing in the shadows with his ancient Treant, conducting the slaughter.

"We don’t stop," Nathan said. His voice was quiet, but it carried the weight of a leader. "The Cleansing doesn’t happen...it can’t! We will clear the remaining High Class Towers on our list. We need to get stronger, and put Clamour in the ground."

The door opened again. Garrett and Dillon stepped inside, unable to wait in the hall any longer. Garrett was gripping Volcan, the mace’s thermal core pulsing a slow, angry orange. Dillon had the Cloud Serpent wrapped tight around his neck, the air around him smelling faintly of ozone.

"We’re in," Garrett said instantly. He hadn’t heard the briefing, and he didn’t care. "Whatever the play is, kid. We’re in."

Dillon nodded, his jaw set. "Cloudy and I are ready to burn things. Just point."

"Your injuries require time," Elise interjected, her pragmatic tone cutting through the adrenaline. "The guild healers explicitly stated you need a minimum of seven days before you reach acceptable combat effectiveness. If you draw a bow right now, you will re-fracture your ribcage."

"Then we make those seven days count," Nathan said, looking around at his party. "Vex will have the equipment ready by then. Elise, you’ll get your staff and circlet. Dillon, your boots. We’ll adjust our formation if we need to." He paused before continuing.

He looked at Garrett and Dillon, then at Elise, and finally at Mirko and Kuro.

"They tried to bury us in the dark," Nathan said. "Now we’re going to make them regret it.

"I’ll be faster next time," Garrett swore, his knuckles white on Volcan’s grip. "I’m not letting a stray goon get a swing at you again."

"We all will," Dillon agreed, his katana rattling slightly in its sheath. "Cloudy is already mapping intercept grids. Next time they push, she fries them."

We will all be stronger, Mirko promised, her hand tightening over his. And they will break against us.

Nathan looked at the people surrounding his bed. He could still feel the phantom crunch of the mace against his ribs. He had almost died on those cobblestones. But he was alive. His party was alive.

The shadow war had just gone loud.

---

Back home, the apartment was warm, cramped, and smelled intensely of toasted bread.

Nathan stepped through the front door, moving slowly, favoring his left side. Lucy was already waiting in the entryway. She had been standing on her tiptoes, peering through the peephole—the same routine she kept every time he was scheduled to return from a climb.

She didn’t cry, she held her tears back. She grew up living in a world defined by monsters and magic, so she had learned to be incredibly, heartbreakingly brave, especially after losing their parents. But the moment the door clicked shut, she launched herself forward, her small arms wrapping fiercely around his waist.

Nathan winced as the pressure hit his ribs, but he didn’t pull away. He dropped to his knees, wrapping his arms around her shoulders.

"Mrs. Chen said you got hurt," Lucy’s voice was muffled against his jacket. "She said you were brought back in an emergency transport. I was really scared."

"It was bad for a minute," Nathan admitted softly, resting his chin on the top of her head. "But I’m okay. Mirko and Kuro saved me. The whole party did. I’m going to be fine."

Lucy pulled back, sniffing loudly. She looked at the two bunnies sitting by the door, Mirko bright green and attentive, Kuro midnight black and perfectly still. Her eyes were red, but her jaw was set.

"You’re going to keep climbing, aren’t you?" Lucy asked. "Even after you almost died."

"I have to," Nathan said honestly. "There are bad people out there, Luce. They want to hurt a lot of innocent people. If we don’t stop them, nobody will. I have to make the outer zones safe. I have to make the city safe... for you."

Lucy stared at him. She didn’t argue. She didn’t throw a tantrum or beg him to stop. She just nodded, her small face hardening with the exact same stubborn, immovable determination Nathan saw in the mirror every morning.

"Then I am making extra toast," Lucy declared, wiping her eyes with her sleeve. "You need to eat more calories. You are too skinny. You need to sleep more. And you need to stop letting people hit you with giant metal sticks."

"That last one is definitely at the top of my priority list."

"It better be." She turned on her heel and marched toward the small kitchenette, already reaching for the bread bag. "Sit on the couch. Don’t move. I am making the unburned kind. It is my specialty."

Mirko hopped after her, a green blur of maternal interference. I shall supervise the toasting process. The tiny human’s culinary skills have improved, but quality assurance remains paramount.

"I don’t need quality assurance! I haven’t burned a piece in fourteen days!"

An exemplary streak. We shall ensure it is not broken.

Kuro remained by Nathan’s side as he gingerly lowered himself onto the worn couch, biting back a groan as his ribs settled. The assassin’s dark eyes watched the domestic chaos unfolding in the kitchen corner, the sounds of bickering filling the small apartment with life.

You told her the truth, Kuro observed quietly through the link. About the Cleansing.

"She deserves the truth. She’s braver than half the registered Climbers at the guild."

Yes. She is. Kuro paused, tilting her head. She gets it from her Summoner.

Nathan leaned his head back against the cushions. He listened to his sister arguing with his heavily armored, anthropomorphic rabbit over the proper settings of a toaster. He thought about the Cleansing, the ticking clock, and the monumental violence waiting for them in the dark.

But right here, in this cramped apartment, he had his anchor. He had his reason to fight.

---

Night fell heavily over the capital.

Through the apartment window, the distant, monolithic Towers gleamed against the starless sky—spires of silver, obsidian, and pale gold. Somewhere out there, the Whispering Dark was still waiting to be conquered. Clamour was moving his pieces. And far above it all, Darius Fester and the Oblivion Drake sat on their throne, watching the board.

Nathan stood by the glass. Lucy was asleep in her bed, one small hand resting gently on Mirko’s green fur as the Knight kept watch. Kuro sat like a gargoyle on the windowsill, her dark eyes tracking the distant city lights. Moonlight rested against the wall, the Tyrant’s Eye swirling slowly in the riser.

Nathan pulled up his interface. The blue light washed over his face in the dark.

He felt a sense of pride looking at his status. Three Towers cleared. Three to go. A war to fight, and a mass culling to stop.

Nathan closed the interface, the blue light fading from the room. The road ahead was brutal, and the Court would not stop hunting him.

But Nathan Cross was still standing.

He had a party that had carried him out of the abyss. He had summons that would butcher the dark to keep him breathing. He had a sister who anchored his soul to the light.

Let the Court accelerate their timeline. Let Clamour come. Nathan would be ready.
