Chapter 1563 - 1564: The Field Mouse’s True Form
Chapter 1564: Field Mouse’s True Identity
Cheng Mu is dead, and the action group is in chaos.
Little Liu watched Cheng Mu die right in front of him, and in his panic, he yelled at the surveillance, making the three members in the monitoring room equally shocked.
"There’s a mole, who is it?"
"Who dares act so recklessly right under our noses? Isn’t this like a moth darting into the flame?"
In the midst of Little Liu and the others’ scramble, such thoughts suddenly emerged from within.
Indeed, whoever did it could not escape their eyes.
Once they start an investigation, this mole will have nowhere to hide.
Immediately, Little Liu hastily reported Cheng Mu’s death to Li Tong.
"Lock down the action group, strictly forbid any movement, everyone stay at their posts, and anyone who disobeys the orders will be treated as a mole, others may rise and attack them." Li Tong’s cold tone delivered the order like a chill wind.
Li Tong’s order was broadcasted quickly into everyone’s ears.
The action group was sealed off, everyone was shocked and furious with the mole among them, and they all followed Li Tong’s orders, no one dared to disobey.
Half an hour later, Ye Fan and Zhang Lu also arrived at the action group, at the scene of Cheng Mu’s death. Besides Ye Fan, Zhang Lu, and Li Tong, there were also Little Liu and the other three.
"Poisoned." Li Tong admitted with guilt, "On my territory, under my supervision, such a significant incident occurred, it’s my responsibility, I failed in my duty."
Little Liu and the others scrambled to speak, pleading guilty for themselves.
Ye Fan showed no emotion, not angered by Cheng Mu’s death, nor did he care about Li Tong and the others’ pleas for forgiveness.
"What’s the plan for handling this? What’s your stance?" Zhang Lu urged as she saw Ye Fan pondering.
"Dead is dead, it’s good that Cheng Mu died at the hands of one of our own, saves us from doing it ourselves." Ye Fan said indifferently.
"But, the intel from Cheng Mu is indispensable to us." Zhang Lu raised her voice.
"Based on the intel provided, there’s little difference whether Cheng Mu is alive or dead; she wouldn’t divulge confidential information to us." Ye Fan firmly stated.
"Once we have leverage over Cheng Mu, there’s no fear of her not submitting?" Zhang Lu had her own rationale and direction, she deeply regretted Cheng Mu’s death.
"It’s useless, we don’t have the time to investigate each thing one by one, it’s beyond our scope. Instead of futile attempts, it’s better to cut through the mess quickly and find an opportunity to strike." Ye Fan confidently said.
With Cheng Mu’s death, Ye Fan didn’t hold anyone accountable.
Against an internal breach, there’s no way to guard against it forever.
An enemy with intent will always find an opportunity to strike.
Li Tong looked relieved; Ye Fan didn’t scold or blame, sparing her face significantly.
Little Liu and the others were truly grateful.
"Did Cheng Mu say anything before dying?" Ye Fan asked calmly.
"Little Liu, recount carefully the situation at the time, don’t overlook any detail." Li Tong instructed as she looked at Little Liu.
Little Liu was the first to witness and see closely as Cheng Mu died, so only he knew the details of Cheng Mu’s death.
"Finally, it has come, death is liberating, but I feel reluctant." Little Liu recalled seriously: "Cheng Mu clearly was reluctant to die despite knowing she was nearing death, but she also showed a sense of relief at dying, appearing very complex."
Ye Fan understood Cheng Mu’s mindset, as the saying goes, a dying person’s words are good, Cheng Mu’s behavior was logical.
"On your way delivering meals, did you encounter anyone? Or anything strange?" Ye Fan looked at Little Liu and asked carefully.
"The meals had no issues, I can guarantee that. On the way, besides meeting Old Zhang, I encountered no one else." Little Liu declared confidently.
"Old Zhang in charge of logistics?" Ye Fan said casually.
"Yes." Little Liu nodded.
"Cheng Mu’s death, at least, exposed an enemy mole right under our noses. At such a sensitive time, Old Zhang dared to casually talk to Little Liu, clearly disregarding my orders. The four responsible for Cheng Mu’s safety must not come in contact with others from the action group, nor should other members initiate contact with Little Liu’s four. These were strict orders."
Li Tong’s expression was cold, as she said icily, "Old Zhang disregarding orders, acting recklessly, makes him the most likely suspect."
Little Liu lowered his head in shame. On this point, he too violated orders, relaxing his guard for Old Zhang’s sake and chatted with Old Zhang for a few minutes. If Old Zhang was indeed a mole, Little Liu would be even more remorseful.
"If my guess is correct, this Old Zhang is the enemy codenamed Field Mouse, the substitute is caught, according to our intel, Field Mouse’s true identity still lurks within the action group. Utilizing this deeply buried piece to assassinate Cheng Mu was to be expected." Ye Fan spoke as if it was a certainty.
"Should we immediately capture Old Zhang for questioning, or monitor him secretly?" Li Tong asked.
"Since the Cat has used this piece and achieved their aim, the piece has no value. Even monitoring it would yield nothing and could cause problems. The Cat and Field Mouse understand that being exposed once is akin to death, especially in these special times. Does a figure like this still need monitoring?"
Ye Fan spoke with indifference, no longer placing any regard on Field Mouse.
To put it bluntly, this is a role without use or value anymore.
"I’ll go get Old Zhang right away." Li Tong quickly trotted off.
When Li Tong appeared before Old Zhang, Old Zhang realized he couldn’t escape the inevitable.
"Knowing you’re exposed, not causing trouble, are you waiting to die?" Li Tong looked at Old Zhang, shouting angrily.
Old Zhang was about to argue, but Li Tong gave him no time or chance to say a word, coldly saying, "The interrogation room is waiting for you, whatever you have to say, say it there, this isn’t the place for it."
"Alright!" Old Zhang responded with a heavy voice.
In the interrogation room, Ye Fan looked at Old Zhang and asked, "Are you Field Mouse, is Niu Ben your stand-in?"
"Yes." Old Zhang answered obediently.
Having received the answer he wanted, Ye Fan turned and left.
He had no intention to say even half a word more to Old Zhang; confronting a person like Old Zhang, he couldn’t be bothered to say even an extra word.
Because, a mole is more detestable than an enemy.
