Chapter 1583 - 1584: Hunter Cat and Yang Yan’s Romance
Li Dingguo was still on the way to the destination, following Jin Hua’s instructions.
At this moment, Jin Hua’s phone rang. Seeing Golden Tiger’s name on the caller ID, he answered without hesitation.
Golden Tiger was one of Mr. Jin’s right-hand men; the other, naturally, was Jin Hua.
In many situations, Jin Hua handled matters at Mr. Jin’s side, while Golden Tiger took care of external affairs.
In this operation, both Jin Hua and Golden Tiger were involved. Jin Hua was in charge of guiding Li Dingguo, and Golden Tiger was responsible for monitoring Hunter Cat and Transforming Mouse.
"Situation’s changed. Operation canceled." Golden Tiger’s voice carried a biting chill.
"What happened?" Jin Hua asked urgently.
"Hunter Cat and Transforming Mouse have been captured." Golden Tiger said, hating the iron for not becoming steel.
He had been monitoring Hunter Cat and Transforming Mouse from a distance. When Li’s mother got in the car with Ye Fan and the others and left, and Hunter Cat became a prisoner and was pushed into a vehicle, he immediately felt something was wrong.
After thinking briefly, he understood: Ye Fan’s skills were a cut above; the game was already over.
Just when he and Jin Hua were fully immersed in the game, it ended ahead of schedule.
"Damn it!" Jin Hua cursed and hung up.
Li Dingguo lost contact with Jin Hua; suddenly there was no voice telling him what to do anymore. When he was hesitating at an intersection, wavering back and forth, he proactively dialed Jin Hua’s number—only to see the phone was switched off, which left him depressed.
The taxi driver grew impatient and urged him several times in a row.
Just when Li Dingguo was feeling at a total loss, he received a call from his daughter.
"Dad, I’m with Mom, we’re fine. Where are you?" Li Tong said softly.
Li Dingguo was overjoyed, tears of relief streaming down his face, and he gave her a location.
A few minutes later, Li Dingguo got into the car.
Li Dingguo and his wife hugged each other tightly, while Li Tong’s eyes showed her discomfort as she stared out the car window.
At this very moment, Qian Weiwei, who was working at the clinic, also received Jin Hua’s report.
At hearing the outcome, her expression turned dark.
"In the end, it’s still a total defeat."
"Looks like this probe has ended in failure."
"But at least we did find out that the target easiest for us to strike at—Ye Fan has long been on guard, laying out a dragnet and just waiting for us to jump into it."
"Ye Fan has plenty of manpower and can just sit back and wait, while I’m stuck in a very passive position."
Qian Weiwei’s tone was helpless. Although they had obtained some useful results, these valuable bits of information instead turned into pressure, which left her feeling very frustrated.
Thinking of this, she grew deeply resentful of Hunter Cat.
If she had command of Hunter Cat’s manpower and network of contacts, she wouldn’t be quite so powerless.
......
The action team had secretly locked Hunter Cat and Transforming Mouse away.
Ye Fan called Yang Yan over alone and said calmly, "We’ve captured two people; their real identities still need to be further confirmed. After interrogation we’ll see if we can determine who they actually are. One of them is someone you should find very interesting."
"Who?" Yang Yan asked, unable to wait.
"Chang Fei," Ye Fan said.
Ye Fan was familiar with Chang Fei, and as the guy who had been fiercely pursuing Yang Yan, many members of the action team had seen him as well.
Previously, the action team had investigated Chang Fei’s identity behind Yang Yan’s back and hadn’t turned up anything suspicious.
Now the situation was different. Chang Fei was an enemy, which meant that behind the name Chang Fei there had to be other hidden information. That had to be dug out.
"Heh heh." Yang Yan gave a playful smile and said easily, "I’m very interested in this guy."
As if she’d encountered a huge joke, or something particularly delightful—in any case, Yang Yan right now was exceptionally happy.
Seeing Ye Fan looking at her oddly, Yang Yan smiled in embarrassment and said, "I’ve made you laugh, Chief."
"Do you know why I called you here?" Ye Fan clarified his purpose.
"Chief, please give your orders," Yang Yan said with mock seriousness.
"The job of interrogating Chang Fei and the other one is yours," Ye Fan instructed.
"No problem." Yang Yan agreed, elated.
Interrogation room.
Hunter Cat was fixed to a chair, looking very quiet.
Not long after, Yang Yan strode in with flair.
Hunter Cat’s eyes suddenly went wide, full of a complicated, bitter look.
Under his gaze, Yang Yan sat down.
"Long time no see. Didn’t expect the one interrogating me would be you," Hunter Cat said in surprise.
"Didn’t we just meet yesterday? How is that ’long time no see’?" Yang Yan mocked. "Looks like you’re pretty forgetful, huh?"
Hunter Cat had just blurted it out—he didn’t know what to say and could only take the initiative to start like that. But Yang Yan’s words dripped with biting sarcasm, which hit him hard.
"Heh heh." Hunter Cat gave a strange laugh, unable to hide his embarrassment. "Now our positions have switched. You’re the one holding my life in your hands, and I’m the prisoner. It’s the kind of situation it’s hard to even find words for."
"It’s a pity. Your identity and intentions prove what kind of person you are. No matter how you disguise yourself, you couldn’t avoid the fate of ending up behind bars," Yang Yan said confidently.
"Maybe you’re right. My sitting here in defeat proves what you’re saying is true. If I were sitting somewhere completely safe, you wouldn’t be in this frame of mind. Isn’t there an old saying, ’Good people don’t live long, bad people live a thousand years’?" Hunter Cat said in self-mockery. "There are plenty of people who’ve done all sorts of bad things and are still breathing free air. Pity I’m not one of them. Now, whatever’s said, it’s all up to you."
"And you still have the face to argue for yourself here. I don’t have time to bandy words with you. Just keep using that twisted logic to comfort yourself," Yang Yan said with disdain.
"Now I don’t even have the right to talk with you face to face for a few minutes?" Hunter Cat sighed, deeply hurt.
"Talk about what? What do you want to hear?" Yang Yan said with a playful tone. "Do you want me to tell you what time I’m taking you home to meet my parents? That when I got your message saying you had something come up, I felt disappointed? That I was angry you stood me up?"
"No matter how bad I am, at the very least I did pursue you. That intention was sincere, wasn’t it?" Hunter Cat shamelessly brought up old matters.
Yang Yan gave him a strange smile and, instead of answering, asked, "Do you think I’m stupid?"
Hunter Cat couldn’t quite figure out Yang Yan’s angle, so he could only seriously shake his head and emphasize, "You’re not stupid. You’re very smart and very cute."
"Then on what basis did you think that when a guy suddenly popped up and started chasing me, I wouldn’t be on guard?" Yang Yan pressed.
"This..." Hunter Cat’s head went a bit blank; he guessed, "Could it be... you were pretending?"
"What do you think?" Yang Yan said with a cheerful smile.
"You fooled me and I didn’t even realize it. That’s probably where I failed the most," Hunter Cat said, mocking himself, his expression instantly collapsing.
