Chapter 94: Bandit Toll
They fell asleep wrapped securely in each other’s arms surrounded by the peaceful symphony of the hidden oasis.
The slow grueling burn of their treacherous journey was forging a bond that no foreign kingdom or rogue mercenary could ever hope to sever.
---
The morning sun broke through the dense canopy casting bright golden spears of light across the hidden oasis. Leon woke up feeling incredibly refreshed thanks to his Endless Vigor skill actively vaporizing his physical fatigue.
He gently untangled his arms from the sleeping noblewoman taking great care not to disturb her peaceful rest.
He pulled on his dark tailored tunic and strapped the massive star iron greatsword to his broad back preparing for the grueling day ahead.
Seraphina woke a few minutes later stretching her athletic limbs with a soft melodic groan.
The agonizing pain in her magical pathways had subsided significantly proving the healing properties of the oasis and his soothing touch were highly effective.
They packed their minimal supplies and mounted the giant armored wolf. Stormfang let out a deep rumbling growl eager to leave the dense forest and return to the open roads leading toward the Solarian Capital.
They rode for several hours breaking free from the treacherous tree line and entering a sprawling valley dominated by a massive raging river. The water violently churned over jagged rocks presenting a lethal obstacle for any traveler hoping to cross.
A heavy stone bridge spanned the width of the treacherous rapids. It was an ancient imperial structure designed to facilitate safe trade routes but it was currently occupied by a highly organized blockade.
Leon pulled the leather reins bringing Stormfang to a halt near the edge of the muddy embankment. He utilized his perfect Night Vision and Aura Tracking to assess the hostile forces gathered on the bridge.
There were roughly two dozen heavily armed rogue mercenaries wearing rusted chainmail and wielding jagged runic axes. They had erected a crude wooden barricade across the stone pathway effectively halting all regional travel.
Standing at the front of the rogue formation was a tall slender man wearing dark blue robes.
The mercenary leader held a glowing wooden staff and radiated a dense suffocating magical pressure indicating he was a seasoned Tier Three Master.
"Rogue water mages," Seraphina noted grimly her violet eyes narrowing in fierce aristocratic disgust. "They dam the trade routes and extort local merchants for exorbitant tolls. They usually flee when Vanguard knights approach."
"They are not fleeing today," Leon replied smoothly projecting a cold calculating dominance.
He steered the giant armored wolf directly toward the stone bridge refusing to show a single ounce of hesitation.
The mercenary leader spotted the approaching noble mount and raised his glowing staff. The surrounding bandits drew their jagged axes offering harsh mocking sneers at the sight of the lone attendant and the unarmed woman.
"Halt right there boy!" the blue robed leader shouted his voice echoing over the roaring river. "This crossing belongs to the Riverfang Company. The toll is five hundred gold coins or the beautiful woman riding behind you."
The crude insulting demand caused a dangerous predatory smirk to spread across Leon’s handsome face. He did not bother drawing his star iron greatsword.
He smoothly slid off the back of the giant wolf and stepped onto the stone bridge.
"I am afraid we are incredibly short on gold today," Leon stated in a deep resonant tone projecting his heavy Intimidation Aura.
The mercenary leader laughed a harsh grating sound that grated on the nerves. He channeled a massive surge of blue aura into his wooden staff preparing to demonstrate his magical superiority.
"Then I will simply drown you and take the woman for myself," the rogue mage sneered viciously.
He thrust his staff forward manipulating the raging river below them. A massive geyser of highly pressurized water violently erupted from the rapids taking the shape of a colossal watery serpent aimed directly at Leon’s chest.
Seraphina tensed her muscles preparing to grab her steel broadsword despite her injured magical pathways.
She knew a Tier Three water manipulation spell could crush a man’s ribs like fragile twigs.
Leon did not move. He tapped deeply into his expanded magical core and activated his newly acquired Water Affinity skill fused seamlessly with his Grandmaster tier Kinetic Shockwave.
He raised his right hand and casually snapped his fingers.
The monumental watery serpent froze dead in midair just three feet away from his face. The rogue mage gasped in pure unadulterated shock straining desperately to push his spell forward but the water refused to obey his commands.
Leon utilized his minor affinity to briefly disrupt the mercenary’s elemental control. He then channeled a massive burst of raw kinetic mana directly into the suspended water.
"Return to sender," Leon murmured chillingly.
He violently thrust his palm forward.
The massive watery serpent violently reversed its trajectory rocketing back toward the mercenary formation with terrifying kinetic velocity.
The high pressure water slammed into the rogue leader with the stopping power of a swinging battering ram. The sheer concussive force shattered his wooden staff and blasted him off his feet launching him backward through the crude wooden barricade.
The heavy stone bridge trembled under the immense kinetic impact. The lesser mercenaries screamed in terror as the residual shockwave knocked them forcefully to the ground leaving them groaning and clutching their bruised ribs.
Leon casually dusted off his tailored tunic and turned back to the stunned noblewoman sitting on the armored wolf.
"The road is clear Lady Seraphina," Leon announced smoothly offering a highly charming wicked smirk.
Seraphina stared at her rugged warden her passive Lie Detector aura wildly flashing with intense blinding awe and a deeply possessive romantic pride.
The magicless servant had just casually humiliated a Tier Three Master using the man’s own element against him.
They rode across the cleared stone bridge leaving the groaning mercenaries behind in the mud. The Solarian Capital was drawing closer and Leon was rapidly proving he was more than ready to face the apex predators waiting for them.
