Chapter 96: Bureaucratic Wall

AAAvenues of the Solarian Capital were a mesmerizing display of wealth and raw magical engineering that far surpassed anything Leon had ever seen in his past life.

Massive towers constructed from gleaming white stone and enchanted crystal pierced the clear blue sky. Wide cobblestone streets were packed tightly with wealthy merchants wearing vibrant silk robes and heavily armed mercenary companies displaying their colorful guild crests.

Sleek wooden carriages hovered silently above the ground suspended by complex levitation runes while high tier knights rode massive exotic beasts through the parting crowds. The sheer density of ambient mana in the air was thick enough to make a normal commoner feel dizzy but Leon simply allowed his Endless Vigor to absorb the rich energy.

Seraphina sat tall and proud upon the back of the giant armored wolf refusing to show a single hint of exhaustion or awe.

Her silver hair blew softly in the warm afternoon breeze as she navigated Stormfang through the bustling market districts toward the eastern noble quadrant.

Leon walked casually beside the massive wolf keeping one hand resting loosely on the hilt of his colossal star iron greatsword.

His sharp dark eyes scanned the dense crowds utilizing his Danger Intuition and perfect Night Vision to memorize the shifting faces and hidden alleyways. He noticed a few cloaked figures lingering near the market stalls casting dark hostile glances toward the glowing silver lion crest on Seraphina’s leather satchel.

"The Capital is a snake pit Leon," Seraphina murmured softly leaning down slightly so only his ears could catch her voice over the roar of the city. "Every single person you see is either a spy for a noble house or a ruthless opportunist looking to sell valuable secrets. We cannot trust a single soul outside of our own walls."

"It sounds like a wonderful place to take a quiet vacation Lady Seraphina," Leon replied flashing her a highly charming wicked smirk that immediately caused a faint pink flush to conquer her pale cheeks.

They finally reached the towering wrought iron gates of the eastern quadrant where the massive estates of the major political powers were located.

The Sterling Manor in the Capital was a sprawling impressive structure built from dark polished stone and surrounded by high defensive walls.

It was designed to be a fortress of luxury and power but as they approached the main courtyard Leon immediately noticed the glaring signs of deep political neglect.

The once beautiful gardens were wildly overgrown and the heavy iron gates squeaked loudly in protest as an elderly servant rushed forward to pull them open.

There were no elite Vanguard knights patrolling the high walls and the few staff members milling about the courtyard wore faded uniforms and expressions of deep heavy exhaustion.

A tall thin man with graying hair and a meticulously trimmed beard hurried down the marble steps of the main entrance.

He wore the traditional dark formal robes of a head steward and his tired eyes widened in profound shock as he recognized the beautiful silver haired woman dismounting the giant wolf.

"Lady Seraphina," the old steward gasped dropping into a deep respectful bow that nearly folded his thin frame in half. "We received the frantic magical missives from the main estate weeks ago but the imperial censors blocked all of our return messages. We feared you were lost in the wilderness."

"I survived Steward Corvis," Seraphina stated firmly her voice carrying that heavy demanding authority she always reserved for her subordinates. "But we have urgent business. The Patriarch has awakened from his meditation and he sent me to secure an immediate audience with the Emperor. Vaeloria is preparing a massive naval invasion."

Corvis visibly flinched at the mention of the foreign kingdom and nervously wrung his pale hands together. He cast a quick cautious glance at Leon before lowering his voice to a desperate frantic whisper.

"My lady an audience with the Emperor is currently impossible," the steward explained sorrowfully shaking his head.

"The Royal Chamberlain has enacted a strict quarantine around the inner palace. He claims the Emperor is suffering from a highly contagious magical illness and all diplomatic petitions are being aggressively rejected."

Seraphina narrowed her beautiful violet eyes a dangerous spark of pure violent outrage flaring deep within her pupils.

"The Chamberlain is a loyal dog to House Vane," she hissed sharply gripping the hilt of her steel broadsword. "He is intentionally deafening the throne while our rivals prepare to tear our borders apart. I will march up to the palace gates and demand my right as a daughter of the Great Duchies."

"They will arrest you for treason my lady," Corvis pleaded stepping forward with a look of pure terror. "The Imperial Executioners are heavily guarding the palace steps. The Capital has become a gilded cage and we are thoroughly trapped without any political allies."

Seraphina let out a frustrated heavy breath and closed her eyes struggling desperately to contain her boiling temper.

She had endured brutal assassinations and poisonous wounds just to reach this city only to find a massive unbreakable bureaucratic wall standing in her path.

The crystal bell violently chimed in Leon’s skull shattering the tense gloomy silence. The digital interface projected a massive glowing pink text box right in his line of sight.

[Quest Issued: The Dominant Reassurance]

[Context: Your fierce silver goddess is feeling politically cornered and heavily stressed. A true warlord knows exactly how to channel her furious frustration into highly inappropriate romantic tension.]

[Objective: Step behind her, wrap your hand firmly around her slender waist, and loudly declare that you will burn the bureaucratic system to the ground for her while staring down the terrified steward.]

[Reward: +20 Strength, Skill ’Diplomatic Immunity (Passive Intimidation)’, 450 Shameless Points.]

[Failure Penalty: The Host will suffer a violent localized magical malfunction causing a highly realistic and uncomfortably loud fart noise to erupt from his boots every time he takes a step on marble flooring.]

Leon did not want to do it, but his options weren’t great

He smoothly closed the distance between himself and the frustrated noblewoman stepping directly behind her athletic frame.

He reached out and wrapped his large heavily scarred right hand firmly around her narrow waist pulling her back flush against his broad muscular chest.

Seraphina gasped softly her violet eyes snapping open in pure unadulterated shock. She instinctively tried to step forward but his iron grip held her securely in place allowing the blistering heat of his body to seep directly through her dark traveling clothes.

Corvis the elderly steward dropped his jaw in sheer horrified disbelief. He stared at the ragged magicless servant who was casually manhandling the prideful eldest daughter of House Sterling in broad daylight.

"Do not worry about the Chamberlain or his pathetic little quarantine Corvis," Leon declared in a deep resonant voice that vibrated heavily against Seraphina’s back. "If the Emperor refuses to open his doors I will simply rip them off the hinges. Lady Seraphina will have her audience even if I have to burn this entire bureaucratic system to the ground."

The sheer terrifying confidence radiating from his massive frame crushed the ambient mana in the courtyard. The elderly steward scrambled backward nodding frantically unable to meet Leon’s dark predatory gaze.

Seraphina felt a massive jolt of blinding electricity shoot straight down her spine.

She did not pull away from his dominant grip. Instead she leaned back slightly into his solid chest a dark possessive smirk slowly replacing her deep political frustration.

[Quest Completed Successfully!]

[Your footwear remains highly dignified and pleasantly silent.]

[Distributing Rewards: +20 Strength, Skill ’Diplomatic Immunity (Passive Intimidation)’ Acquired, 450 Shameless Points.]

A sudden explosive surge of dense muscular power flooded his body elevating his Strength to a massive two hundred and fifteen points. The new passive skill integrated into his nervous system allowing him to project a specialized heavy aura that made lesser bureaucrats naturally fearful of denying his requests.

Leon slowly released her waist and offered the stunned steward a polite respectful bow that completely contradicted his previous treasonous threats.

"Please prepare a hot bath and a fresh change of clothes for Lady Seraphina," Leon instructed smoothly acting like the perfect obedient servant once again.

"We have a very long and highly entertaining week ahead of us."
