Chapter 100: Midnight Tailor
"She simply brought us the keys to the castle Lady Seraphina," Leon replied smoothly bending down to pick up the heavy golden envelope. He offered her a devastating confident smile.
"It seems we have a party to attend."
The invitation hung heavily in the air between them catching the faint moonlight spilling into the ruined courtyard. Seraphina snatched the envelope from his hand tearing the wax seal open with a fierce aggressive motion.
She scanned the elegant flowing script her beautiful face hardening into a mask of pure cold calculation.
The exhibition duels were a traditional capital event designed for rival houses to settle minor disputes through proxy champions without triggering an all out street war.
"Valeriana was telling the truth," Seraphina muttered folding the thick parchment and slipping it into her pocket. "The Chamberlain is hosting this event to celebrate his anniversary as the head of the imperial council. If we cause enough of a spectacle during the duels he will be forced to grant us an audience to save face in front of the minor nobles."
Leon nodded slowly analyzing the political battlefield. He needed to prepare for combat against seasoned capital veterans who likely possessed highly refined magical techniques.
"There is one minor problem Lady Seraphina," Leon noted smoothly gesturing down at his torn bloodstained tunic and heavy leather boots. "I cannot walk into the most exclusive royal banquet in the empire looking like a highly successful highway bandit. We need proper attire and this estate currently lacks the funds to purchase a decent loaf of bread."
Seraphina let out a soft frustrated sigh pinching the bridge of her nose. She turned toward the foyer where Corvis was directing the mousy maid to sweep up the broken glass.
"Corvis," the noble daughter called out her voice echoing through the quiet night. "Did the Patriarch leave the emergency vault sealed before he returned to the eastern borders?"
The elderly steward jogged over nodding his head rapidly. "Yes my lady. The vault beneath the wine cellar remains completely untouched. But the locking mechanism rusted shut years ago. We have not been able to open it."
"Take us there," Leon commanded projecting his heavy magnetic authority.
They followed the steward down a narrow winding stone staircase leading deep into the damp chilling depths of the manor. They arrived at a massive solid iron door covered in thick layers of brown rust and dust.
Leon did not wait for instructions. He stepped forward grabbed the heavy iron wheel in the center of the door and brutally twisted it.
His monstrous two hundred and fifteen points of Strength shattered the rusted internal gears with a loud grinding screech. He pulled the heavy metal door open revealing a small stone room filled with heavy wooden chests.
Seraphina stepped inside and opened the nearest chest revealing stacks of gleaming gold coins and several beautiful ancient family heirlooms.
"Corvis," she ordered a confident powerful smile returning to her face. "Send someone into the merchant district immediately. Find the best midnight tailor in the city and drag him here. Pay him whatever he asks."
Two hours later a terrified looking elderly tailor stood in the center of the dusty master suite holding a wooden measuring tape.
The man was surrounded by fine rolls of dark silk and heavy velvet clearly unhappy about being dragged out of bed but highly motivated by the massive stack of gold coins resting on the nearby table.
Leon stood in the corner watching quietly as the tailor nervously measured Seraphina’s waist and shoulders. She had removed her heavy traveling clothes and was currently standing in a form fitting white under-tunic that displayed her athletic flawless curves to the room.
The crystal bell chimed softly in his mind projecting a glowing pink text box over the nervous tailor’s head.
[Quest Issued: The Intimate Measurement]
[Objective: Step forward, take the measuring tape from the tailor, wrap it around her waist yourself, pull her close, and whisper that she looks perfect.]
[Reward: +10 Mana, Skill ’Thread Control (Minor)’, 400 Shameless Points.]
[Failure Penalty: The Host will suffer spontaneous and permanent hair loss on his left eyebrow ruining his ruggedly handsome symmetry.]
Leon did not hesitate knowing how crucial his physical appearance was to his Charisma stat.
He pushed off the wall and walked silently toward the center of the room. He reached out and smoothly plucked the wooden measuring tape from the old tailor’s shaking hands.
"I will handle the close measurements," Leon instructed calmly shooting the man a cold heavy glare that sent the tailor scurrying toward the corner of the room.
Seraphina stiffened her violet eyes widening as Leon stepped directly into her personal space.
He reached around her wrapping his long arms around her sides and pulling the soft measuring tape securely around her narrow waist. He intentionally pulled the tape tight drawing her soft athletic body flush against his hard muscular chest.
The sheer intimate proximity sent a massive jolt of blinding heat straight to her core. Her lie detector aura flared projecting a wild confusing wave of deep romantic submission.
"Warden," she breathed heavily her voice a weak breathless whisper. "The tailor is watching."
"You look perfect Seraphina," Leon whispered in a deep resonant tone letting his lips brush softly against her silver hair.
She closed her eyes melting slightly into his dominant embrace completely forgetting about the nervous old man standing in the corner.
[Quest Completed Successfully!]
[Your eyebrows remain thick and highly symmetrical.]
[Distributing Rewards: +10 Mana, Skill ’Thread Control (Minor)’ Acquired, 400 Shameless Points.]
Leon slowly released the tape and stepped back offering her a charming wicked smirk.
Before Seraphina could compose herself and deliver a highly flustered reprimand a sudden sharp metallic thunk echoed through the quiet room.
A sleek black arrow shattered the glass of the large balcony window flying through the air with terrifying speed. It buried itself deeply into the wooden frame of the tailor’s clothing mannequin sitting just a few feet away from them.
Pinned to the wood by the jagged black arrowhead was a single dried black lotus flower.
The Eclipse Syndicate had found them.
