Chapter 253: F7 — FIRST SIGNAL

[The Silent Threshold — Seventh Space — Day 68 — 6:00 AM]

Alex arrived at the seventh space before anyone else.

[F1 Corruption: 89%]

[F4 Corruption: 58%]

[F5 Corruption: 24%]

The same numbers as when they had arrived at the Eastern Island.

Two months of ocean training sustained even after yesterday’s record price.

Grim on his shoulder.

The crimson flames at their highest point in the arc since the Academy corridor — the brightness they had when something important was happening or about to happen.

---

The seventh space was silent.

The omnidirectional spiritual plane of the circular space — which yesterday had been saturated with the Threshold’s transmission — was different this morning. Not quieter. More oriented.

As if the completed transmission had changed the space’s state. The Threshold had finished saying what it had to say. Now it waited.

"Do you feel it?" said Alex.

**"Yes."** Grim. **"F7 feels that the transmission is complete."**

"How do you know?"

**"Because the channel between you and F7 changed during the night."**

Alex processed that.

The channel — which since they had arrived at the Threshold had been the echo he described as presence without direction, like hearing someone breathe in a dark room — now had something it hadn’t had before.

Direction.

F7 beneath the stone, two meters below the seventh space’s floor, oriented toward Alex with the active attention Raven had described as listening.

But different.

No longer just listening.

---

The team arrived over the next ten minutes.

Seraph first — which was always first when something important was happening. Emily second. The rest in the usual order.

No one said anything upon seeing Alex at the center of the seventh space.

They just took position.

"What happened during the night?" said Seraph.

"The channel with F7 changed." Alex. "It has direction now. Before it was just presence."

"What kind of direction?"

"As if F7 had decided something."

**"It decided,"** said Grim.

"What did it decide?"

**"That the bearer received the record."** Grim. **"And that therefore the seal’s state can change."**

"Can the seal change on its own?" said Seraph.

**"Not completely. But the seal has layers."** Grim. **"The outer layer — the one the Gods imposed — cannot change without all seven Fragments together. The inner layer — the one the Silent Threshold built to preserve F7 — responds to different conditions."**

"What conditions?"

**"That the bearer has received the complete record."** Grim. **"What happened yesterday."**

---

The first signal arrived without warning.

Not as sound, not as light, not as any visible change in the circular space. The seventh space’s floor — the black mountain stone over the point where F7 slept — vibrated.

Not dramatically. The kind of vibration felt in the sole of the foot before the ear can confirm it.

[F4 — active resonance — not initiated by Alex]

[F4 Corruption: 58% → 58.3%]

F4 responding to F7.

Not F1, not F5 — F4. The Veil. The Fragment that had a relationship of origin with F7 according to what Grim had said in the seventh space the day before.

"F4 responded," said Alex.

"Without you activating it?" said Seraph.

"Without me activating it."

Emily with Purifying Light in reading mode:

"The spiritual plane beneath the floor changed." Her voice carried the concentration she had when processing something Purifying Light read with difficulty. "F7 is closer to the surface than yesterday."

"Did it move?"

"Not physically." Emily. "On the spiritual plane. F7’s signature, which yesterday was two meters beneath the floor, is now one and a half meters."

"Did the seal give way?" said Raven.

"The seal’s inner layer," corrected Grim. **"The one that responds to the bearer who received the record. It gave way as much as it could without all seven Fragments complete."**

"How much more can it give way without all seven?" said Kira.

**"To the point where F7 can communicate directly. Not be obtained — communicate."**

---

The second signal was different.

The channel between Alex and F7 — which had had direction since morning — opened.

Alex felt F7.

Not as an echo, not as resonance, not as the floor’s vibration.

As mutual recognition.

F7 recognizing the bearer of the other three Fragments the same way F4 had recognized the previous bearer in the Empty Fleet captain’s hold — the signature of the same Fragment in two different bearers, the recognition between parts of the same origin.

But more complex.

F7 recognized Alex not as F4’s bearer but as the bearer of all three — F1, F4, and F5 in the same channel, the tri‑Fragment synchronization that training had built and that the Threshold had produced passively during the transmission.

"F7 recognizes me," said Alex.

"What does that feel like?" said Emily.

Alex searched for the description.

"Like when Daren in the captain’s hold — F4 recognized him before I saw him. That instant where the Fragment knows something I don’t yet." A pause. "But instead of F4 recognizing the previous bearer — it’s me recognizing F7. And F7 recognizing me."

**"F7 waited for this,"** said Grim. **"Not for the bearer in the abstract. For a bearer with enough to be recognized."**

"What does ’enough’ mean?"

**"The record received. The three Fragments in synchronization. The understanding of what F7 can do and what it’s for."** Grim. **"Without that, F7 couldn’t recognize the bearer as a bearer — only as a presence."**

---

Raven with F3 active in deep reading mode — her green eyes bright, the Dark Veil oriented toward F7 beneath the floor with the attention that was only possible between Fragments from the same point of origin.

"F7 is responding to F3 as well," said Raven.

"Different from yesterday?" said Seraph.

"Yesterday I felt it was listening. Now I feel it’s speaking." Raven. "Not in words. In state. F7 changed state."

"To what state?"

Raven took time to answer — not because she didn’t know, but because the description required care.

"From waiting to ready." Raven. "F7 is ready."

"Ready to be obtained?" said Kira.

"Ready for the decision to be made." Raven. "If the decision is to obtain it — it’s ready. If the decision is not to obtain it yet — it accepts that too."

"F7 accepts the bearer’s decision?" said Maya.

**"F7 contains the previous cycle’s memory,"** said Grim. **"That memory includes the original Harvester’s instruction. And the instruction says the decision is the bearer’s."** His flames. **"F7 honors it."**

---

The team evaluating.

Seraph with F2 in reading mode — processing the seventh space’s spiritual plane, the seal’s state, F7’s signature one and a half meters beneath the floor.

"The outer seal is still intact," said Seraph. "All seven Fragments are still needed to break it completely."

"And without breaking it completely?" said Alex.

"The inner layer has already given way as much as it could." Seraph. "What F7 can do now — communicate, recognize the bearer, respond to the present Fragments — it’s doing." A pause. "What it can’t do is leave the outer seal without all seven."

"So we need the remaining four Fragments first?" said Emily.

"To obtain it completely — yes." Seraph. "To establish the channel with it — it’s already established."

"What use is the channel without obtaining it?" said Kira.

Seraph looked at Alex.

"Explain it to them."

Alex looked at them.

"F7 with the partially open channel can start transferring the previous cycle’s memory in fragments." Alex. "Not the complete record — that requires all seven together in the same bearer."

**"F7 contains the memory of every cycle where the Fragments have been active,"** said Grim. **"Including where they ended up in the original sealing and how they’ve moved since then."**

---

"What does the guardian require?" said Alex.

The team looked at him.

"The guardian?" said Emily.

"Fragment 7 mentioned a guardian." Alex looking at Grim. "Something that actively guards the seal. Is the guardian what we’ve been feeling as the Threshold’s presence, or is it separate?"

**"Separate,"** said Grim. His flames carried something that in any other expression would have been caution. **"The Threshold is the place. The seal is the Gods’ layer. The guardian is—"**

Grim stopped.

The seventh space’s floor vibrated.

Stronger than the morning’s first vibration.

F7 responding to something — not to Alex, not to the team. To something F7 also recognized.

**"There,"** said Grim. His flames oriented toward the center of the circular space.

The space between the team and the seventh space’s central point — which had been empty since they entered the Threshold — had something.

Not visible.

But present.

---

Kira with Predator’s Sense.

She couldn’t classify it — like everything originating from the previous cycle, the reading system didn’t correspond. But she could read that it was there.

"Indeterminate signature at the center," said Kira. Her voice flat, informative. "Level: unreadable."

"Threatening?" said Seraph.

"No." Kira. "Not exactly neutral either." A pause. "Predator’s Sense reads it as — expectant."

Raven with F3 oriented toward the center:

"F3 feels it." Raven. "It’s from the same origin as the Threshold but different from the Threshold. The Threshold is passive — it records, preserves, transmits. This is active."

**"The guardian,"** said Grim.

"What is it?" said Alex.

**"What the original Harvester left to ensure F7 couldn’t be taken by someone who shouldn’t take it."** Grim. **"Not hostile. But with a condition."**

"What condition?"

The space was silent.

The presence at the center of the seventh space — expectant, as Kira had said. Waiting.

**"That,"** said Grim, **"is what it’s going to tell us."**
