Chapter 264: WHAT THEY KNOW ABOUT THE ANGEL
Jessica had both notebooks open on the crooked three‑legged table when the team came down for breakfast.
The first notebook — the notes from Black Coral to the Silent Threshold. The second — the one titled *"Previous cycle"*, with the forty pages of the Threshold’s record she had documented during the days in the mountains.
Between the two notebooks, a blank sheet of paper.
On the sheet — two columns. What they knew about the angel. What they didn’t know.
The column of what they didn’t know was longer.
"When did you start this?" said Seraph, arriving at the table.
"At four in the morning." Jessica. "I couldn’t sleep and I needed to organize what we have before making any tactical decision."
"And?"
"And we have less than I would need for a complete strategy." Jessica. "But we have enough to start."
Seraph sat down.
The rest of the team arrived — Max with Viktor’s coffee, Maya with the map, Emily with the eyes of someone who had slept but had slept poorly.
Kira from the crow’s nest:
"No angel signature within range. The anomaly on the interior spiritual plane is still present but with no new movement."
"It’s still waiting," said Seraph.
"It’s still waiting."
---
"Let’s start with what we know with certainty," said Jessica.
The team paid attention.
"The fallen angel is not a creature, not a Fragment bearer, and doesn’t correspond to any category in the Temple’s records, the Circle’s, or the Red Bones’." Jessica. "Viktor — does the Circle have any record of anything similar?"
"No." Viktor direct. "In forty years of Circle records, nothing that corresponds to what’s described."
"Confirmed then — a category with no precedent in the current cycle." Jessica noting. "What we know of its origin: the previous cycle’s record describes repressors sent by the Gods when the Harvester approached the point of reunification. This cycle’s was built specifically for this moment of cycle eighty‑six."
"Built how?" said Maya.
"I don’t know." Jessica honest. "The record doesn’t describe the construction mechanism. Only the result and the purpose."
"And the purpose?" said Emily.
"To prevent the Harvester from being complete." Jessica. "Not to destroy the bearer if it can be avoided — the fragmented Harvester is useful to the Gods, as we established. But to prevent reunification. Also, it’s likely there’s no way to destroy the Fragments; otherwise there would be no need to fragment them."
---
"What does it have instead of a Fragment?" said Raven.
"Direct authorization from the plane where the Gods operate." Jessica. "It’s not its own power in the sense of the Fragments — it’s not energy the angel generated or accumulated. It’s direct access to the Gods’ plane as a source."
"What difference does that make in combat?" said Seraph.
"That the angel’s power has no fixed limit in the same sense as the bearers’ power." Jessica. "Bearers have corruption, have thresholds, have the cost of use. The angel has access to a source that doesn’t deplete the same way."
"Does that mean it can’t get tired?" said Kira from the crow’s nest.
"It means it doesn’t get tired the way we do." Jessica. "There may be a limit — we don’t know what it is."
Seraph processing in real time.
"And the level?"
"Unreadable by Alex’s Soul Sight." Jessica. "Which implies that Soul Sight, which operates on the spiritual plane, can’t read something that exists primarily on the Gods’ plane."
**"Unreadable for the core as well,"** said Grim. **"The core can feel the signature but can’t quantify it."**
"And Predator’s Sense?" said Kira.
"The same." Kira answering her own question. "Predator’s Sense reads on the physical and spiritual planes. If the angel’s main signature is on the Gods’ plane, Predator’s Sense only reads the residue it leaves on the lower planes."
"And is that residue enough to read its movements?" said Seraph.
"I’ll find out when it’s in range." Kira. "Before that, I can’t know."
Alex sighed.
"In short, we have no real information."
---
"Grim," said Jessica. "You mentioned yesterday that the core had felt the signature before. In the previous cycle’s record."
**"Yes."**
"Can you describe what the signature is?"
Grim took time.
**"The previous cycle’s record doesn’t have an image of that cycle’s repressor."** His flames. **"But it has the spiritual signature the original Harvester felt when the repressor was near."** A pause. **"And that signature — the previous cycle’s repressor’s — has the same origin as the one the fallen angel left on the mountains’ spiritual plane."**
"The same origin as in the same plane?" said Jessica.
**"The same origin as in the same source."** Grim. **"The Gods built cycle forty‑three’s repressor the same way they built cycle forty‑two’s. The mechanism is different — physical in this cycle, corruption in the previous one. But the signature at the origin is identical."**
"And how did the original Harvester overcome the previous cycle’s repressor?" said Seraph.
**"It didn’t overcome it directly."** Grim. **"The original Harvester in cycle forty‑two didn’t reach all seven Fragments. The repressor was enough to prevent it."**
Silence.
"The previous cycle’s repressor won?" said Maya.
**"It won in the sense that the Harvester didn’t complete the process."** Grim. **"It lost in the sense that the Harvester built the Silent Threshold before the repressor could fully act."**
"Why didn’t the repressor destroy the Threshold?" said Emily.
**"Because the previous cycle’s repressor didn’t have the instructions to do so."** Grim. **"The Threshold was built in the space between the repressor’s action and the Harvester’s sealing. The repressor arrived too late."**
"And this cycle’s?" said Seraph.
**"It has different instructions."** Grim. **"The Threshold already exists — there’s nothing left to protect there. This repressor’s instructions are specific to this moment: to prevent all seven Fragments from being in the same bearer."**
---
"So attacking the angel directly doesn’t work," said Raven from her position. "Access to the Gods’ plane makes it more resistant than anything we can produce."
"Not necessarily." Seraph. "The previous cycle’s repressor was enough to stop the original Harvester. This cycle’s is more powerful because this cycle’s bearer went further." A pause. "But this cycle’s bearer also went further than any previous bearer."
"Which means?" said Alex.
"Which means the repressor has more power than ever, and the bearer does too." Seraph. "The question isn’t whether the angel is more powerful than the team. It probably is." A pause. "The question is whether the team can produce enough combined pressure for the bearer to reach a window of opportunity."
"What window?" said Kira.
"The one F7 gives him." Seraph. "The previous cycle’s memory in real combat. If the original Harvester used something specific against the previous cycle’s repressor — something F7 has recorded — Alex could replicate or adapt it."
**"There is something in the record,"** said Grim.
The team looked at him.
**"Not the full fight — the original Harvester didn’t record the fight’s details. But there is a note in the record about the previous cycle’s repressor’s weak point."**
"What weak point?" said Jessica with her pen ready.
**"The previous cycle’s repressor couldn’t act directly on the plane between life and death."** Grim. **"Its access was to the Gods’ plane and the spiritual plane. The plane between life and death — the Harvester’s territory — had natural resistance to the Gods’ authorization."**
"Why?" said Jessica.
**"Because the plane between life and death was not created by the Gods."** Grim. **"It was created by the original Harvester before the first cycle. The Gods don’t have full authorization over a plane they didn’t build."**
"And the Harvester has access to that plane?" said Seraph.
**"It’s its territory."** Grim. **"The complete Harvester has full access to the plane between life and death. The angel doesn’t."**
"And the bearer with five Fragments?" said Alex.
**"Partial access."** Grim. **"Enough for some things on the plane to respond. Not enough to operate it fully."**
"And with six?" said Emily.
**"More."**
"With seven?"
**"Full."**
---
Seraph looked at Jessica’s sheet — the two columns, what they knew and what they didn’t.
"Tactical summary," said Seraph.
"The angel is more powerful than the team in raw power." Jessica. "It has access to the Gods’ plane, doesn’t have the corruption limit bearers have, and was designed specifically for this moment."
"And the team?"
"The team has something the angel doesn’t." Jessica. "Coordination developed over months of joint combat. And F7 — the previous cycle’s memory, which includes information about the repressor’s nature."
"And the weak point of the plane between life and death?"
"Only accessible with all seven Fragments complete." Jessica. "Which is exactly what the angel is trying to prevent."
Seraph processed that.
"So the angel and the team have opposing objectives, and each one needs exactly what the other is trying to prevent."
"Correct." Jessica.
"And the only way to win is to reach all seven before the angel can act at the moment of reunification?"
"According to what we know — yes."
Seraph looked at Raven.
The previous night’s proposal. To look for the angel before the angel found them. To choose the terrain.
"If we look for it —" Seraph, "— we force it to act before Alex has all seven. Which is exactly what we want if the team can generate enough pressure for Alex to reach F6 and F3 during the fight."
"Transfer Fragments during combat?" said Emily. "Is that possible?"
"I don’t know." Seraph. "No one has tried."
"If it doesn’t work—"
"If it doesn’t work, we improvise more." Seraph. "But if we wait for the angel to choose the moment, it chooses the moment when the team is most vulnerable."
Alex looked at Raven.
Raven looked back.
"We’ll go look for it," said Alex.
"When?" said Maya.
"When the team is ready." Alex. "How much time does Raven need for the full Army of Bones?"
"I’ve had it ready since yesterday," said Raven.
"Jessica?"
"I documented everything I could document." Jessica. "I’m ready."
"Seraph?"
Seraph looked at her hands — without F2, without the Paladin’s scythe. With what was beneath the Fragment and still hers.
"Ready."
"Emily?"
Emily with Purifying Light — still recovering from F2’s transfer, yesterday’s limit still present in her posture.
"Give me this morning," said Emily. "This afternoon I’m ready."
"This afternoon, then," said Alex.
**"Master,"** said Grim.
"What."
**"The angel feels when the bearer moves toward it."** His flames. **"In the previous cycle, the repressor acted the moment the Harvester moved toward it."**
"Which means?"
**"That the moment we move toward it — the waiting ends."**
"I know." Alex. "That’s why we’re waiting until the team is ready."
**"And you?"**
Alex looked at the five points of light on his chest.
"This afternoon too."
