Chapter 260: RETURN TO THRESHOLD PORT

[Northern Mountains — Eastern Island — Day 72 — 7:00 AM]

The camp was broken in twenty minutes.

The team did that well — breaking camp, moving it, setting up the next — with the efficiency of people who had spent weeks learning to do it fast because there wasn’t always time to do it slowly.

This morning there was time.

They did it fast anyway.

The descent began with the sun still low over the snow‑capped peaks, the northern mountains of the Eastern Island more familiar on the way down than they had been on the ascent — the team knew the terrain now, the points where the rock gave way, the angles where the wind changed direction, the three kilometers before the Silent Threshold where the fauna stopped appearing.

Now the fauna still didn’t appear.

Not because of the Threshold.

Because of the team.

---

Raven walked.

Not at the front with Kira and Maya as had been the natural distribution during the ascent. At the back of the group — not so far back as to be separated, but enough for the space between her and Alex to be visible without being declarative.

F3 at rest.

The mountain skeletons dissolved since leaving the Silent Threshold — Raven had kept them active during the days at the camp, but this morning she had released them one by one before starting the descent.

Kira from the front, without turning:

"F3 is at rest."

"I know," said Alex.

"It’s the first time in weeks."

"I know."

Kira added nothing more.

---

Kira’s Predator’s Sense read Raven during the descent not as a potential threat but as what the team now did — monitoring each person’s state with the same attention they gave to the terrain.

What Predator’s Sense read:

Raven walking with the posture of someone who had made a big decision the night before and was still integrating what it meant to have made it. Not the tension of anger — something different. Calmer and heavier at the same time.

The hand gesture to her stomach, which used to happen without Raven noticing, now happened with full awareness. Her hand would arrive, and Raven would let it stay.

Kira filed that away.

She didn’t comment on it.

---

[Village — North Road — 11:30 AM]

The elder was at the village entrance when the team arrived.

As if he had known they would come.

Which he probably had — twelve generations of the village reading the mountains’ spiritual plane, the elder with eighty years of accumulated ability, the signature of four active Fragments in Alex being exactly the kind of thing such a person’s spiritual plane could read from kilometers away.

The elder looked at the team.

He looked at Alex — at the four points of light on his chest, F7 visible among the other three with the signature that had no exact color in the visible spectrum.

Four.

The elder nodded with the slowness of someone confirming something he had calculated but needed to see to fully believe.

He said something in the local language.

**"He says the tablets fulfilled their function,"** Grim translated. **"And that the next twelve generations will no longer need to guard anything."**

"Why not?" said Maya.

**"Because what they guarded reached where it needed to go."**

---

The village received them as the first time — food, comfortable silence, the space to exist without anyone asking more than the moment required.

This time shorter.

The team ate, rested an hour, and continued.

The elder at the village entrance watching them leave.

Not with words — with the posture of someone who had witnessed something that had been a possibility for twelve generations and was now fact.

Emily, passing by the elder, stopped for a second.

"Do you know what’s coming?" she said.

Grim translated the question.

The elder responded.

**"He says he knows something big is coming,"** said Grim. **"And that the northern villages have been preparing for that since they started guarding the tablets."**

"Preparing how?"

The elder spoke again.

**"Not with weapons or power."** Grim. **"With memory. With having remembered for twelve generations that this was possible."** A pause. **"He says that’s enough."**

Emily looked at him for a moment.

She nodded.

She kept walking.

---

[South Road — afternoon]

The descent toward the lower forest.

The unclassified creatures from the first day of ascent appeared again in the distance — the three level‑eighty‑seven specimens that had encountered Raven, that F3 had recognized, and that had approached to five meters before retreating.

This time they didn’t approach.

They stopped at the forest’s edge and watched the team from there.

Kira with Predator’s Sense:

"The same three from the first morning."

"The same?" said Alex.

"Same signature. Same territory distribution." Kira. "They’re watching us."

The one at the center — the one that had come closest to Raven, the one Grim had said had a signature predating the current cycle — took a step forward.

It stopped.

It looked at Alex directly.

Both pairs of the creature’s eyes on the four points of light on Alex’s chest.

One second.

The creature turned and disappeared into the trees.

The other two following it.

"What was that?" said Maya.

**"Recognition,"** said Grim. **"F7 is in the bearer now. The creatures that survived from the previous cycle feel it."**

"So?" said Raven from the back of the group.

**"And they know the process has begun."**

No one responded to that.

The process.

The four Fragments still missing.

Everything that came after the Silent Threshold.

[Threshold Port — West Dock — Day 72 — 5:15 PM]

The boat was where they had left it.

Max on the dock — standing, spyglass in hand, evaluating the hull with the attention of someone who had spent days checking a boat that couldn’t move because the team giving the orders was in the mountains.

Viktor sitting on the dock with his coffee.

Seven‑day coffee — not the same coffee, Viktor had gotten more in Threshold Port, but with the same cup and the same posture.

Max saw the team approaching from a hundred meters.

He counted — the captain’s instinct to count the crew without thinking.

Nine. Complete.

He lowered the spyglass.

The team reaching the dock. Max looking at each one — evaluating their state with the same silent efficiency with which he evaluated the boat’s hull.

Seraph: intact but different. The weight of someone who had done something that couldn’t be undone.

Kira: the same as always, which with Kira always made it impossible to know if it was true.

Maya with three new maps.

Jessica with two full notebooks.

Emily with the bag of Threshold Port plants still intact.

Raven at the back of the group, alone.

Grim on Alex’s shoulder.

And Alex.

Max looked at Alex.

The four points of light on his chest — F1 crimson, F4 violet, F5 gold, and the fourth with no exact color in the visible spectrum but present, with the signature that made the dock’s spiritual plane respond slightly to its proximity.

Max looked at those four points for a full minute.

Without saying anything.

The team waited — not with discomfort, with the recognition that Max needed that minute and that the minute was valid.

Then Max looked at Alex’s eyes.

"Did you come out whole?" said Max.

"Yes."

"The boat too?"

"The boat wasn’t in the mountains, Max."

"I know." Max. "But if you came out whole, I wanted you to know the boat did too." A pause. "In case it mattered."

Alex looked at him.

"It matters."

Max nodded.

He stepped aside to let the team pass.

---

Viktor didn’t get up from the dock, coffee in hand, watching Alex pass.

"How many?" said Viktor.

"Four."

"The three you had plus F7?"

"Yes."

"And F7?"

"Different from the other three." Alex. "Memory instead of power."

"Controllable?"

Alex thought about it honestly.

"More than yesterday."

Viktor processed that answer — which was exactly the kind of answer Viktor processed well, because Viktor understood the difference between *yes* and *more than yesterday* and knew which of the two was more valuable.

"Good." Viktor. "Raven?"

Alex looked toward where Raven had already passed onto the boat.

"Talk to her," said Alex.

Viktor nodded.

He stood up.

---

[Boat — Deck — sunset]

The boat at Threshold Port’s dock with the team aboard and the sun setting over the bay.

The first time in days the team was complete in the same space — including Viktor and Max.

No one organized a meeting.

No one needed one.

The team distributed themselves on deck with the naturalness of weeks of coexistence, each in the point corresponding to their state, and the conversation arrived on its own — not as a debriefing, as the people they were after something big processing aloud.

Maya spreading the Silent Threshold map on the crooked three‑legged table.

Jessica with both notebooks open comparing notes.

Emily with Purifying Light in passive reading mode — monitoring F7’s corruption in Alex with the continuity that had been her routine for days.

Kira from the crow’s nest — which Kira always ended up in regardless of where she started.

Seraph at the railing looking at the island’s interior — the northern mountains visible from Threshold Port, the Silent Threshold invisible from here but present in the spiritual signature F2 still read.

Raven on the boat’s south side.

Viktor beside her, sitting, coffee in hand, not speaking yet but present.

---

Grim on Alex’s shoulder looking at the team.

**"Master."**

"What."

**"The ocean arc ended here."** His flames. **"The Silent Threshold also ended."**

"And now?"

**"Now train to adapt to this power and then the remaining Fragments."** Grim. **"Seraph’s F2. Jessica’s F6. And when Raven is ready — F3."**

"And time?"

**"The fallen angel is on its way."**

"How much time do we have?"

**"I don’t know exactly."** His flames. **"But the angel knows you obtained F7. And the angel doesn’t delay."**

Alex looked at the northern mountains.

The Silent Threshold he couldn’t see but that Soul Sight read — the empty space where F7 had slept for eons, the previous cycle’s record still on the walls, the seventh circular space with a forty‑two‑meter radius and the symbol repeated at two‑and‑a‑half‑meter scale.

Empty.

Because F7 was in him.

"When do we set sail?" said Max from the helm.

Seraph from the railing:

"Tomorrow at dawn."

Max nodded.

The boat at the dock.

The team on deck.

The sunset over Threshold Port with the northern mountains in the background and everything that came after waiting on the other side of the ocean.
