Chapter 262: THE SHOCKWAVE
[Threshold Port — North Dock — Day 73 — 8:30 AM]
The news arrived with the first ship of the morning.
Not directly to the team — it arrived at the port, as all news arrives in ports, distributed among sailors who had heard it from sailors who had heard it from someone who had been in Central City when it happened or near someone who had been, with the specific degree of distortion a story acquires when it crosses the ocean by word of mouth over days.
Kira heard it first.
From the crow’s nest, Predator’s Sense in environment‑reading mode since dawn, picking up conversations on the north dock where the newly arrived ship was unloading.
"Team," said Kira.
The team was on deck in four minutes.
---
"What exactly did you hear?" said Seraph.
"What they’re telling on the north dock." Kira. "A ship that left the main continent six days ago. They’re carrying the rumor from Central City."
"Which rumor?"
"That something landed in the central plaza." Kira. "Not a creature, not a bearer, not anything the Temple could classify. The impact destroyed the plaza’s stone within a two‑meter radius. The departure shockwave when it left destroyed facades within a hundred‑meter radius."
"Casualties?" said Emily.
"Injured. No confirmed deaths." Kira. "The plaza was partially empty when it happened — early in the morning."
"And the Temple?" said Seraph.
"State of emergency." Kira. "Alex Carter’s posters updated with an additional level of urgency. Rumor that the Temple is asking independent Hunters for help in addition to their own hunters."
Jessica taking notes.
Maya with the map — calculating distances, times, routes.
---
"Six days from Central City," said Maya. "The fallen angel landed six days ago." A pause. "If it left immediately toward the Eastern Island from Central City—"
"It should already be here," said Alex.
"Not necessarily." Maya looking at the map. "Central City is inland on the main continent. The Eastern Island is weeks of ocean crossing by normal ship." A pause. "We don’t know how fast the angel moves."
"Faster than a ship," said Seraph.
"How much faster?"
Seraph looked at Grim.
**"The launch shockwave destroyed facades within a hundred‑meter radius,"** said Grim. **"Which implies acceleration from zero to cruising speed in less than a second."** His flames. **"It doesn’t use wind like ships. It uses the air’s spiritual plane."**
"How long does it take to cross the ocean at that speed?" said Kira.
**"I don’t know exactly."** Grim. **"But if it maintains takeoff speed — days. Not weeks."**
"How many days?" said Max from the helm.
**"Three. Four possibly."**
The team processed that.
Three days from Central City.
Less than the six days the news had been circulating.
"It’s already crossed the ocean," said Seraph. Not a question.
**"Probably."**
"And why isn’t it here?"
**"It might be."** Grim. **"On the Eastern Island. Not in Threshold Port."**
---
Seraph evaluated in real time.
"The fallen angel knows F7 was at the Silent Threshold." Seraph. "The first thing it would do upon reaching the Eastern Island is go to the Threshold."
"Which is empty," said Jessica.
"Which is empty." Seraph. "What the angel would find in the seventh space is the space where F7 was for eons and is no longer."
"And after finding it empty?" said Raven.
"Look for the bearer." Seraph. "The spiritual trace of four active Fragments on the Eastern Island isn’t hard to read for something operating from the Gods’ plane."
"How long until it reaches the port?" said Emily.
"I don’t know." Seraph. "It could be hours. It could already be above us and just evaluating before acting."
The team looked at the sky.
Threshold Port’s sky — blue, with morning clouds, nothing visible that corresponded to the description of something arriving from the north at shockwave‑creating speed.
"It’s not above us yet," said Kira. "Predator’s Sense would have read the signature."
"How much range does Predator’s Sense have from the crow’s nest?" said Seraph.
"Twenty kilometers on solid ground. Less in mountain conditions." Kira. "If the angel is in the northern mountains — I’ll read it when it comes out of them."
"When?"
"I can’t predict it." Kira. "But when it happens, we have the minutes it takes to get from the mountains to the port."
---
"F2 is still tomorrow," said Seraph.
"Still tomorrow with the angel potentially in the mountains?" said Emily.
"Today." Seraph correcting herself. "F2 is today. Now if possible."
"Can the transfer be done quickly?" said Alex.
"I don’t know." Seraph direct. "I’ve never given up a Fragment. No one on this team has." A pause. "But waiting while the angel could be hours from here is worse than trying without knowing the time it takes."
Emily looking at Seraph.
"Are you ready to do it now?"
Seraph looked at her.
"I’ve had F2 for fifteen years." A pause. "There is no moment where I’m more ready than another."
---
[Threshold Port — Boat — 9:15 AM]
F2’s transfer would start in an hour.
The time Emily needed to prepare the healing mode that would sustain Alex during the process — which without the specific training of F7’s transfer was different, unpredictable, exactly the kind of process that required Purifying Light to be active before it started.
Meanwhile:
Jessica finishing documenting the previous day’s presentation — the last notes from the Silent Threshold, F7’s corruption state after forty‑eight hours.
[F7 Corruption: 86.8%]
Two tenths less than yesterday. F7 dropping more slowly than any other Fragment but dropping.
Maya with the map — updating the fallen angel’s position according to the speed data Grim had estimated. The map with the likely trajectory marked in dotted lines from Central City to the Eastern Island.
Raven on the boat’s south side with F3 active in spiritual‑plane reading mode.
"Do you feel it?" Alex asked her.
"Not yet." Raven. "F3 reads signatures on the spiritual plane. The fallen angel’s signature—" a pause, "— I don’t know if F3 can read it."
"Why not?"
"Because F3 reads signatures of things that have spiritual nature in the sense I know." Raven. "The fallen angel might have a different nature."
**"Different,"** confirmed Grim. **"The plane the angel operates from isn’t the usual spiritual plane. It’s the plane where the Gods coordinate the cycle — above the normal spiritual plane instead of within it."**
"So there’s no way to detect it before it’s on top of us?" said Kira.
**"Alex’s Soul Sight could read it if it’s in reading range."** Grim. **"Soul Sight operates on the spiritual plane but has access to the layer where the spiritual plane and the Gods’ plane overlap."**
"How much range?"
"Depending on how much active attention I put into the reading —" Alex, "— two kilometers maximum."
"Predator’s Sense has twenty," said Kira. "But if it can’t read the angel’s signature—"
"Two kilometers with Soul Sight and twenty with Predator’s Sense for everything else." Seraph. "Not ideal."
"No." Kira. "But it’s what we have."
---
Viktor and Max on the dock — not on the boat, on the dock, looking north where the interior mountains were visible over Threshold Port’s rooftops.
"When was the last time something destroyed facades within a hundred‑meter radius in Central City?" said Max.
"Never." Viktor.
"And the Temple in a state of emergency?"
"Three times in forty years of the Circle." Viktor. "And none of the three were because something landed in the central plaza and destroyed the stone."
Max processed that.
"And we wait for it to come here?"
"We don’t have a choice." Viktor. "Alex needs F2 before facing the angel. F2 is here."
"And if the angel arrives before the transfer is done?"
Viktor looked toward the mountains.
"Then we improvise."
"Seraph said the same thing last night."
"Seraph and I have been in this world for a long time." Viktor. "We both arrived at the same conclusion independently." A pause. "That usually means it’s the correct conclusion."
Max looked at the mountains.
"Will you fight?"
"I’m fifty‑two years old and level eighty‑eight." Viktor. "And Blood Magic." A pause. "I’m not the angel’s target. But I can be annoying."
Max processed that.
"I can be annoying too."
Viktor looked at him.
"I know." His eyes on Max. "That’s why I stay close to you."
---
[Deck — 9:45 AM]
Kira from the crow’s nest.
Predator’s Sense in maximum north‑reading mode — twenty‑kilometer radius, the Eastern Island’s ecosystem mapped in real time, searching for any anomaly on the reading plane that didn’t correspond to fauna or people.
Nothing yet.
But Kira didn’t come down from the crow’s nest.
The team below processing, preparing, calculating.
Kira above reading.
Because someone had to be the eyes, and Kira was always the eyes.
Grim at the north railing with his crimson flames looking at the horizon.
Emily ready.
Seraph ready.
Alex looking at the four points of light on his chest — the four, the ones the team had seen for days and that in hours would become five if F2’s transfer worked — with the attention of someone who knows that what’s coming is different from everything before and faces it anyway.
"Ready?" said Seraph.
"Yes," said Alex.
"Emily?"
"Ready."
Seraph looked toward the northern mountains one last moment.
Then she looked at Alex.
"We begin."
