Chapter 1858 - 1944: A Painful Life
A hysterical scream pierced the air, as the man fell to his knees.
"Scream again, and I’ll chop your son into pieces right now!"
The Young Marshal spoke coldly. As he finished speaking, Lin Kaifei bit into his hand, crushing the bones, tears streaming down his face.
What does it mean to be one thought away from Heaven, one thought away from Hell? Lin Kaifei, the manager of this hall, was responsible for the daily operations around these parts, the one steering the entire ship. Over the years, he bought cars, houses, and saved over ten million, becoming an enviable, admired figure back home.
But in just one day, due to a single thought, everything was ruined. Now, he faced a ten billion compensation, fully aware that someone as ruthless as the Young Marshal would not let him off easily.
His entire stomach felt as if scalded with boiling water, pain seeping continuously, mingled with regret. But though the world has many medicines, none can cure regret. Greed ultimately demands its price. Su Xuan originally bore him no hatred; even at the end, after Su Xuan called for the Redemption Sect, there was still a chance to turn things around. Compensation was just a billion—an enormous amount, but having made so much over the years, he could have done better by reallocating funds!
Yet, heaven-made disasters can be survived, self-made disasters cannot. Su Xuan did give him opportunities, but he failed to grasp them.
Finally catching his breath after biting through bone, the Young Marshal sat down, playing with the Flying Knife. By now, Xu Lifen had basically explained the situation.
"When did Lan Cunxu get involved with such a person? Investigate what relationship he has with the Redemption Sect!"
"Yes, Young Marshal. By the way, should we make a move against the Redemption Sect? We’ve suffered such great losses this time!"
"Make a move? How do you plan to fight them? Even though the Young Marshal’s Mansion is filled with experts, those people are brutes. And they’re not limited to just the Imperial Capital; the Redemption Sect is scattered all over Huaxia. If we truly provoke them, there’s no telling how we’d die!"
The Young Marshal’s face twitched, his anger growing, as he picked up the water kettle and smashed it into Lin Kai’s face.
"Ah..."
Lin Kaifei cried out, biting into his arm again, on the brink of collapse from pain.
"Lin Kaifei, don’t say I didn’t give you a chance. You must bear the whole ten billion. From today on, your entire family will serve as my servants. Only when the debt is paid off will you be freed. Don’t think suicide will solve your problems unless you intend to take your whole family with you."
"Cough, cough..."
Lin Kaifei’s eyes were bloodshot, his head shaking hazily. His son was only eight, his daughter ten, and they all were to serve as slaves; such a reality was beyond his acceptance.
A Lin Kai and a Lin Kaifei—two similar names but leading to the same ending. Might drive Lin Kaifei crazy, perhaps never dreaming his trick on Su Xuan would cost his whole family their fate. Ten billion was unimaginable money, not achievable even in a lifetime of hunger.
Thirty years later, Lin Kai’s family crawled out from a mineshaft, looking nothing like their former selves. An aged Lin Kaifei, near seventy, glanced at the sky, tears streaming down his old face.
For the sake of just a little interest back then, his family spent their entire lives in that mineshaft. Parents died inside, the son worked from eight to thirty-eight, unable to die even if he wanted!
Some people, some things, are best not provoked, as the costs can be too high. Lin Kaifei looked at the sky’s blue, giving a feeble laugh before collapsing, dying at the mine’s entrance.
When Su Xuan descended the mountain, Xia Yangyi sat beside him.
"Who is the Young Marshal?"
"That, I don’t really know. There’s a Young Marshal’s Mansion in the Imperial Capital. It’s said the boss is the Young Marshal, and there’s another called the Commander. But no one has seen their true faces, and the mansion is like the nobleman of ancient wartime, full of clever guests."
"Oh, this sounds interesting. Be careful recently. If you run into any trouble, come find me at Jun Yue."
"Thank you, Boss!"
Hearing Su Xuan’s words filled Xia Yangyi with excitement. Though not fearing the Young Marshal’s Mansion, it’s still a tough place. With Su Xuan’s backing now, what was there to fear!
"Yes, here’s twenty million. Share it with the brothers!"
After Su Xuan handed him the money, they parted ways.
Along the way, Lan Cunxu admired Su Xuan profoundly.
"Big brother, really, what do you do? How are you so incredible!"
"Don’t flatter me, just do your job well. I’m leaving for a while. I hope not to be disappointed when I return!"
Su Xuan said with a smile.
"Don’t worry, even if I exhaust myself, I won’t let you down!"
After Su Xuan helped settle the matter, he felt extraordinarily light-hearted, relieved.
Deng Xiaolu’s injuries were healing well after surgery, and by the third day, Dong Jianwen was back working on the construction site. Seeing his brother alright was incredibly exciting for Dong Jianwen.
"Lu, how are you feeling today?"
Su Xuan smiled and said, with Xiaoyu constantly by Deng Xiaolu’s side, taking care of him. Su Xuan thought Lu was quite lucky. It’s not easy in life to find a woman who’s so devoted through thick and thin!
"Brother, I really can’t repay your kindness. Without you, I don’t know if my life would even matter?"
Deng Xiaolu said emotionally!
"Hehe, no need for such formality between brothers. Recover well, Xiaoyu is a great girl, treat her well!"
Su Xuan smiled.
"Sure, rest assured! I’ll cherish Xiaoyu for a lifetime!"
Deng Xiaolu said seriously, while Xiaoyu smiled blissfully, a genuine happiness born from the heart. This predicament was resolved unexpectedly swiftly by Su Xuan.
"Xiaoyu, has that hypocrite Qi Ye contacted you lately?"
"No, he messaged yesterday saying he was going abroad, and would be back in a while!"
