Chapter 159: Hesitation
The door closed softly behind him.
The quiet corridor stretched ahead, empty save for the occasional servant moving about the morning’s duties. None of them so much as glanced in his direction.
Denzel made his way through the residence at an unhurried pace.
The same polished floors.
The same carefully arranged decorations.
The same faint scent of incense lingering in the air.
Only this time, there was no uncertainty guiding his steps.
He knew the way out.
A servant waiting near the entrance noticed him approaching and respectfully pulled the door open before he even reached it.
"Have a safe journey."
Denzel offered a small nod in return.
"Thank you."
The morning sun greeted him the moment he stepped outside.
He descended the stone steps leading from the residence, the cool breeze carrying with it the familiar sounds of the village awakening around him.
For the first few minutes, his thoughts remained on the conversation he’d just had.
Aisha...
He hadn’t expected her to summon him simply to apologize.
Nor had he expected her to worry so much over something he’d already put behind him.
A faint smile tugged at the corner of his lips before disappearing just as quickly.
She really was an unusual person.
His hand slipped casually into his pocket as he continued down the street.
The training grounds were still a fair distance away.
If he picked up his pace, he might not be too late.
"..."
His expression gradually settled back into its usual calm.
The village bustled around him.
Merchants called out to passing customers.
Children laughed as they darted between the streets.
An elderly couple argued—good-naturedly, from the sound of it—over which vegetables to buy for breakfast.
Everything felt...
Normal.
Denzel rounded a familiar corner.
His foot suddenly paused for the briefest moment before continuing forward.
Something...
His brows drew together almost imperceptibly.
The feeling vanished as quickly as it had appeared.
He kept walking.
Perhaps he’d imagined it.
Several more steps passed.
Then it returned.
Not a sound.
Not a smell.
Not even movement.
Just...
That same strange sensation.
Subtle.
Difficult to describe.
It wasn’t threatening.
If anything, it felt oddly restrained.
As though someone’s attention had settled quietly on him from somewhere nearby.
Denzel’s pace never changed.
His gaze remained fixed ahead.
Only his thoughts sharpened.
He’d felt something similar before.
Recently.
Where?
He searched his memory while continuing toward the training grounds.
...
The forest.
His eyes narrowed ever so slightly.
It was the same feeling he’d brushed aside back then.
At the time, he’d assumed he was simply being overly cautious.
Now...
He wasn’t so sure.
Without drawing attention to himself, Denzel crossed to the opposite side of the road.
A completely unnecessary change.
He continued walking.
The sensation remained.
His eyes drifted toward a fruit stall as though inspecting the day’s harvest.
His reflection shimmered faintly in a polished brass pot resting on the merchant’s table.
Nothing unusual.
No familiar face.
No one obviously watching him.
He walked on.
At the next intersection, he turned into a narrower street instead of following the quickest route to the training grounds.
The lane was quieter.
Fewer people.
Less noise.
His footsteps echoed softly against the stone beneath his feet.
Still...
The sensation lingered.
Patient.
Consistent.
Following.
Denzel let out a slow breath.
There was no longer any point pretending it was coincidence.
Someone...
Was keeping track of his movements.
Whoever it was knew enough to remain out of sight.
Which meant they either possessed considerable skill...
Or they’d been watching him for much longer than he’d realized.
Without breaking stride, Denzel’s gaze lifted toward the street ahead.
His expression remained as calm as ever.
Only the quiet alertness settling behind his eyes hinted that something had changed.
I’m being followed.
The realization settled in his mind with surprising clarity.
He didn’t know who.
He didn’t know why.
But one thing was certain.
This wasn’t the first time.
It was only the first time he’d managed to notice. He paused for a moment.
Denzel continued forward as though nothing had happened.
His pace remained even.
His shoulders stayed relaxed.
Anyone watching from afar would see nothing more than an ordinary young man making his way through the village on another quiet morning.
Only Denzel knew better.
The faint sensation never left.
It lingered just beyond the edge of his awareness, neither drawing closer nor falling behind.
Patient.
Careful.
Watching.
He resisted the urge to look around.
There was little point.
Whoever had managed to follow him this long without revealing themselves wouldn’t carelessly expose their position simply because he glanced over his shoulder.
If anything...
Doing so would only tell them he’d noticed.
That wasn’t something he intended to reveal.
His gaze remained fixed on the road ahead while the village carried on around him.
A pair of children ran laughing across the street, nearly colliding with a merchant balancing a basket of bread on his shoulder.
The merchant grumbled under his breath before continuing on his way.
Life moved as though nothing had changed.
Denzel blended into it without effort.
His thoughts, however, refused to remain idle.
Should he continue to the training grounds...
Or turn back?
Neither choice felt particularly appealing.
If he suddenly changed direction now, whoever was following him might grow suspicious.
Heading somewhere quiet wasn’t much better.
An isolated place could just as easily convince them he’d realized they were there.
No...
Not yet.
Until he understood their intentions, there was no reason to force their hand.
For now...
The safest choice was to keep acting naturally.
He rounded another corner, weaving through a small crowd gathered around a vegetable stall.
A delivery cart creaked slowly across the road ahead, momentarily slowing the flow of pedestrians.
Denzel came to an unhurried stop, waiting for it to pass like everyone else.
His eyes followed the cart for a brief moment.
Then... A thought quietly surfaced.
’...’
That could work.
Without another change in expression, he stepped forward with the rest of the crowd and continued toward the training grounds.
As the crowd gradually thinned behind him, Denzel allowed more of his attention to settle on the faint presence trailing him.
The sensation remained.
Quiet.
Steady.
Patient.
Now that he’d stopped dismissing it as imagination, it became impossible to ignore.
His brows drew together almost imperceptibly.
...It isn’t the same.
The realization came almost at once.
The presence he’d encountered in the forest had been different.
Back then, every attempt to focus on it had produced the same result. It had felt as though something was there one moment before slipping away the next, leaving behind nothing he could truly grasp.
Like mist scattering the instant someone reached for it.
No matter how carefully he tried to trace it, the feeling had never remained long enough for him to understand it.
This one wasn’t like that.
It lingered.
Consistent.
Measured.
Almost as though the person behind it had no intention of disappearing completely.
Only of staying unnoticed.
A small distinction.
Yet an important one.
Whoever was following him possessed enough skill to avoid ordinary detection.
But they weren’t beyond his senses.
Which meant either they underestimated him...
Or they simply didn’t know he was capable of perceiving them in the first place.
Neither possibility could be confirmed.
Not yet.
Denzel quietly set the thought aside.
There was little value in building assumptions upon assumptions.
Instead, he considered something far more practical.
Who?
His mind sifted through the handful of people he’d encountered since arriving in the village.
There weren’t many.
Fewer still who would have any reason to keep track of his movements.
The answer that surfaced first wasn’t born from certainty.
Only probability.
...Patrick.
The confrontation outside the tavern had drawn enough attention.
Patrick hadn’t struck him as someone willing to let humiliation pass without doing anything.
Watching him from a distance before making another move...
That seemed far more believable than simply forgetting the matter altogether.
Even so...
Denzel couldn’t rule out other possibilities.
Perhaps it had nothing to do with Patrick.
Perhaps someone else had taken an interest in him for reasons he had yet to discover.
The village was still unfamiliar to him.
There were undoubtedly people and circumstances he knew nothing about.
Assuming too much now would only cloud his judgment later.
He exhaled slowly.
No matter who the person was, the immediate problem remained the same.
Their intentions were unknown.
As long as they continued to observe without acting, there was little to gain by exposing the fact that he’d noticed them.
Maintaining the illusion of ignorance was, for now, the safer choice.
His pace remained unhurried as he blended seamlessly with the morning crowd.
A passing merchant offered a cheerful greeting to another stall owner.
Children chased one another between the legs of adults.
Somewhere farther down the street, someone laughed loudly enough to draw several curious glances.
The village carried on as though nothing was amiss.
Denzel did the same.
His attention, however, never strayed far from the quiet presence lingering behind him.
He would wait.
He would watch.
And if that silent observation became something more...
If even the slightest trace of hostility revealed itself...
Then he would act.
Without hesitation.
