My Taboo Harem!

Chapter 1106: Moonlit Disaster

"...I realized you might return before I finished organizing the emotional architecture, so I decided to stand here and hope my mouth would survive the moment."

Phei’s smile deepened:

"Did it?"

"No," Maya said. "It is already misbehaving."

"Good."

Her eyes lifted.

He squeezed her hands.

"I missed you." Her expression changed looking in his eyes filled with nothing but love for her; boundless love for her.

"You missed my mouth misbehaving?"

"I missed you rambling like the world gave you too many thoughts and no proper basket to carry them in."

"That sounds affectionate and insulting."

"It is."

"I will accept it with reservations."

"You always do."

"I do not always do anything. I sometimes do things. Frequently, perhaps. With patterns. But always is a dangerous word, Phei My Love. Always makes promises reality enjoys attacking."

Phei looked at her for a moment:

"You sound like someone who knows that too well."

Maya’s fingers tightened around his, for once, the flood of words paused.

Maya breathed in quietly, then stepped closer. The serene feeling around her deepened until it seemed to settle over his shoulders like a silver cloak.

"Sienna is not alone," she said.

His body went still again.

Maya did not look away:

"She is in trusted hands. Dravenna knows what she is doing, even when she shows it in the most irritating way possible, which is to explain nothing and look beautiful while denying everyone the satisfaction of panic. That is very unfair of her. But unfair does not mean incompetent. Sienna is safer with her right now than she would be with your anger standing at the foot of her bed asking questions no one would answer quickly enough."

Phei’s eyes narrowed.

"That sounded practiced."

"It was the third speech," Maya admitted. "The first had more sympathy for your anger. The second had less sympathy for Dravenna. The third became balanced, which annoyed me because balance is often what happens when feelings are forced to wear shoes and then—"

"Maya."

"I am saying she will be fine," Maya said, and this time the rambling softened into something clear. "Not because nothing is wrong. Something is wrong obviously. But Sienna is not falling alone. She has hands around her that understand what she’s going through better than you do tonight. And if those hands are not enough, others will move."

Phei watched her carefully, she stared back with soft, moonlit stubbornness.

Somehow, he lost.

This girl was dangerous in the most unreasonable way; Maya simply held his hands, spoke in loops, and made resistance feel like shouting in a temple.

Phei sighed.

"I hate not knowing anything, being moved around by people who know more than me but never bother to tell me anything, I hate that everyone keeps deciding what I can handle and what I can not."

Maya’s gaze softened further.

"That one is fair."

Phei looked at her.

Maya’s thumbs brushed over the backs of his hands.

"It is fair," she repeated. "You are allowed to hate it. Being loved does not make it pleasant to be managed. Being protected does not make silence gentle. People can hurt you while trying to save you. They can do the right thing with the wrong amount of trust. They can stand between you and danger, and still make you feel like they have stood between you and yourself."

Phei did not speak, something in his chest tightened, not painfully this time, but with recognition.

Maya smiled faintly:

"See? That was the mature speech. It survived."

His laugh came softer now.

"Barely."

"I am proud of it anyway."

"You should be."

Her face warmed again.

Then she tugged his hands.

"Come sit."

"I am fine standing."

"You are not. You are standing as if the floor owes you answers. The floor does not know anything. It is a floor. It has suffered enough under rich people’s shoes."

"The floor can endure."

"Perhaps, but I cannot endure watching you pretend standing angrily is a strategy. Sit down before I become disappointed."

Phei’s brows lifted:

"You would weaponize disappointment against me?"

"I am not proud of it," Maya said, with the solemnity of someone absolutely proud of it. "But I have limited tools... it is gentle manipulation. There is a difference."

Phei stared at her and gave up.

A wise man knew when he had been defeated. A foolish man argued with Maya Scarlett while she was holding his hands, surrounded by moonlight, and threatening disappointment with the softness of an assassin using a pillow. Phei had done foolish things before, obviously. His romantic history had become a museum of evidence. But even he had limits.

He let her guide him to the bed.

Maya sat first, then patted the space before her lap with an awkward seriousness that almost ruined him.

"Here," she said.

Phei looked at her thighs.

Then at her face.

"Maya."

Her expression turned pink around the edges, but she lifted her chin with fragile dignity.

"You have placed your head on more dangerous things tonight."

"That is not the argument you think it is."

"It is the only argument I had prepared."

"It has problems."

"So do you. Lie down."

Phei lowered himself and slept on the bed, his head rested on her thighs.

For one breath, both of them went still.

Maya’s thighs were soft beneath him, warm through the pale fabric of her dress, carrying that same serene aura that seemed to gather around every part of her. It was not sensual in the sharp way many of his women’s presence could be. It was intimate in a stranger, deeper manner. Celestial. Soothing. Almost sacred, if sacred things were allowed to ramble about furniture crimes and emotional knives.

Above him, Maya leaned down slightly.

Her silver hair spilled forward in a luminous waterfall, falling around both their faces until the rest of the room blurred behind a curtain of moonlit silk.

Phei looked up at her.

She looked down at him.

Then, with a carefulness that made his chest ache, she slid her fingers into his hair.

Slowly...

...her nails grazed his scalp with the lightest pressure.

Phei’s eyes half-closed before pride could object.

"There," Maya whispered.

"You sound pleased with yourself."

"I am. Your eyes are doing the where your soul has stopped trying to climb out of your body and challenge the nearest secret to a duel."

"That is very specific."

"I observe you."

"That sounds dangerous."

"It is. I have collected many details. Some are useful. Some are embarrassing. Some I will take to my grave because I am merciful, though mercy is difficult when you keep giving me material."

Phei smiled faintly beneath her hand.

Minutes began to pass.

Neither of them rushed to fill all of them.

Maya’s fingers moved through his hair again and again, drawing slow paths from his temple to the back of his head, then returning with patient tenderness. Sometimes she hummed under her breath without realizing it. Sometimes her lips parted as if she wanted to speak, then she decided silence had earned a small chance at survival.

The peace surrounding her thickened.

It did not feel like sleep but a room inside the world where violence had been asked to wait outside.

Phei allowed himself to sink into it.

And for the first time since leaving Sienna’s room, Phei could breathe without feeling like his breath had teeth.

Maya looked down at him, for a moment, something unreadable moved behind her eyes, then she smiled.

Her fingers continued through his hair.

The system notifications waited inside his mind, stacked and glowing, divine blue messages humming with the weight of rewards, achievements and whatever other nonsense the universe had decided to bill him for tonight.

Phei could feel them; a beautiful, dangerous pile of power, the beauty of a system admitting that what had happened with Sienna was not merely sex, not merely affection, family secrets finally clawing toward the surface.

It was a turning point, a forbidden threshold and crack in the sealed half of his element forming bridge between dragon and goddess.

A reward cascade large enough to make ordinary cultivators spit blood from envy and write angry petitions to Heaven.

His smile sharpened.

Maya noticed immediately, "You are smiling like something terrible has become interesting."

"That is most things in my life."

"That does not make it better."

"It makes it consistent."

"Consistency is not virtue when the pattern is disaster."

"You are very wise tonight."

"I am always wise," Maya said, then hesitated. "No. That sounded arrogant. I am sometimes wise. Often worried. Occasionally accurate. Frequently confused. Rarely brief."

Phei closed his eyes.

The blue light bloomed behind them.

Within the moonlit peace of Maya’s lap, with silver hair falling around him and her strange comfort holding back the worst of his anger, he finally allowed the first notification to open.

The night had taken much from him.

It seemed, at last, ready to pay.
