Chapter 88: Delivery from the high council
The grand study of Duke Owen’s estate was suffocatingly quiet, save for the crackle of burning oak in the massive hearth. Heavy velvet curtains blotted out the midday sun, casting long, grim shadows across mahogany bookshelves and armor displays.
Standing in the center of the room, casually leaning his weight on one leg with both hands buried deep in his leather trousers, was Vesper—the Ashen Shadow.
As one of the Four Dread Commanders under Duke Owen’s personal banner, Vesper exuded an aura of effortless lethality. He was lean, pale, and moved with a ghostly stillness. At his belt hung twin matte-black daggers, and between his fingers, he mindlessly rolled a blood-red coin back and forth across his knuckles.
On the other side of a sprawling oak desk sat Duke Owen.
The Duke’s face was twisted in a mixture of cold fury and tight restraint. His knuckles were white where his hands gripped the armrests of his carved throne.
"Care to explain why you were dallying in a border tavern, Vesper?"
Owen’s voice boomed softly—a low, thunderous growl that vibrated through the floorboards.
"When Rin and Balthazar marched out, you remained behind. Now both of them are dead. Erased by a magicless rat."
Vesper caught the blood-red coin flat in his palm, sliding it into his pocket with a quiet click. He kept his posture relaxed, though his sharp, assassin’s instincts kept him carefully measuring the explosive pressure radiating off the powerful noble in front of him.
"With all due respect, Your Grace,"
Vesper replied, his tone smooth and even, careful not to push the powerhouse past his boiling point.
"Neither I nor anyone in this realm anticipated that Rin and Balthazar—two of your strongest commanders—would fall to a single man. I assumed their deployment was more than enough to enforce the execution decree."
"Assumptions make fools of dead men, Vesper,"
Owen spat, leaning forward into the warm firelight.
"This is now an absolute priority."
Owen’s dark eyes locked onto Vesper with terrifying intensity.
"Find him. Do not underestimate him. I don’t care about the higher-ups. My pride comes first. Take his head personally and bring it back to this desk."
Vesper dipped his head slightly, a faint, razor-thin smirk touching the corner of his lips.
"Consider it done, Your Grace. I’ll make sure his end is silent."
Without waiting for a formal dismissal, Vesper turned on his heel and strolled out of the study, his hands slipping back into his pockets as he vanished into the dark corridors of the mansion.

A few moments after the assassin departed, a young squire knocked hesitantly on the heavy oak doors before stepping inside. He bowed low, his hands trembling slightly as he presented a rolled parchment sealed with a heavy, golden stamp.
"A-A delivery from the High Council, Your Grace," the squire stammered.
"The official summons for the annual assembly."
Owen snatched the scroll from the boy’s hands and waved him off with a flick of his wrist.
"Leave us."
The squire practically scrambled out of the room, slamming the door shut behind him.
Owen broke the golden seal and unrolled the thick parchment, his eyes scanning the ornate script. It was the mandate for the mandatory gathering of the Five Dukes—the rulers overseeing the five major human territories.
The human kingdom was structured in a vast, circular formation spanning hundreds of miles, with each duke governing a massive quadrant to hold back the wild, untamed wilderness. At the exact geometric center of all five territories stood the Royal Tower—an ancient, towering spire of white stone where the highest political decisions of humanity were forged.
Owen crushed the parchment in his fist, a dark grimace settling over his features.
Just when I need to focus all my forces on Vince, the Council demands my presence.
He stood up from his desk, his heavy velvet cape billowing behind him as he marched toward the door.
"Guards!"
Owen roared into the hallway.
"Prepare my horses and summon the elite vanguard! We ride for the Royal Tower immediately!"
---
In the grand master bedroom adjoining the study, the heavy oak doors did little to muffle the Duke’s thunderous orders.
Sitting silently by the tall, arched window was Emily, Duke Owen’s wife.
She wore a gown of deep crimson silk, her long hair cascading over her shoulders. Her hands were folded gently in her lap, but her mind was miles away from the political machinations of the human realm.
As she listened to the muffled clatter of armor and shouting guards outside, her gaze drifted down to her own reflection in the glass windowpane.
Unconsciously, her fingers rose to touch the soft skin of her collarbone.
Her mind instantly flashed back to that fateful night in the quiet, shadowed hallway—the night Vince had cornered her against the stone wall. She could still vividly remember the terrifying speed with which he had moved, the overwhelming warmth of his broad frame trapping her in his personal space, and the icy, piercing violet gaze that had commanded her total silence.
He had demanded she ensure his escape went unreported until he was long gone. He had treated her not as a grand Duchess, but simply as a woman in his way.
A sudden, hot rush of blood flushed through Emily’s cheeks.
Her breath hitched slightly as the memory played again in her head. She bit her lower lip, pressing her cool hand against her flushed face to hide the warmth rising under her skin.
Why am I thinking about him now?
She thought, her heart giving an involuntary, erratic thud against her ribs.
He’s an enemy of the race at this point... a hunted criminal...
And yet, despite the danger, the sheer, dangerous authority Vince had exuded that night had left an indelible mark on her mind—one that no amount of royal luxury could ever make her forget.
She turned her head back toward the window, watching from above as Duke Owen mounted his armored stallion and led his armed convoy out through the iron gates of the estate, riding hard toward the center of the continent.
Out beyond the horizon, a storm was brewing. And Emily knew, deep down, that when Vince returned... Her husband won’t be enough to stop him.
