My Taming System Makes Me Overpowered

Chapter 123: Forced regression

The water inside the colossal amphitheater did not merely flow. It thrummed—an ancient, heavy pulse that pressed against every surface like the slow heartbeat of something older than the trenches themselves. Light filtered down in fractured shafts of cold blue-green, catching on the shattered pillars and the drifting clouds of blood that still bloomed from the corpses of Nerissa’s fallen captains. The silence after the last clash was not empty. It was waiting.

At the far end of the arena, descending the broad steps of the dragon-skull throne, came the Tide Caller of Nethros.

Nerissa moved with the unhurried certainty of a predator who had never known true fear. She was a breathtaking, terrifying fusion of royal elegance and lethal grace. Her frame was sculpted with an almost cruel perfection—an hourglass of waist-to-hip curves wrapped tightly in fitted plates of iridescent abyssal fish scale that clung to every contour like a second skin. The scales shifted between deep sapphire and oil-slick violet with every subtle motion, drinking the dim light and returning it in soft, predatory gleams. Her skin held a faint pearlescent sheen, smooth as polished marble and cool as the deepest current. Long, silken hair drifted around her in a living veil of azure water-mana, each strand moving with deliberate grace, as though the ocean itself deferred to her will.

Siren ancestry was written into every line of her body. Delicate, luminous webs of fin flared along the high arches of her cheekbones and the elegant points of her ears, framing a face of ethereal, dangerous beauty. Her lips were full and dark, set in a line of absolute command. Where a human woman’s legs would join, her hips tapered seamlessly into a long, powerful aquatic tail covered in overlapping plates of shimmering blue scale. The tail ended in a sweeping, translucent fin that stirred the water with slow, deliberate strokes, sending soft eddies curling across the stone floor. In her right hand she held a massive three-pronged trident of abyssal gold. The weapon radiated an oceanic aura so dense that the water around it visibly swirled and compressed, as though the sea itself recoiled from its presence.

Yet she did not raise the trident.

Her dark, luminous gold eyes swept across the ruined entrance, past the drifting bodies of her captains, and locked onto the intruders with the weight of a depth charge. Behind her, a dozen high-ranking abyssal nobles—clad in ornate silk robes that billowed like dying jellyfish—trembled in open terror. They hurried toward a secret escape archway carved into the rock behind the throne, their movements frantic, undignified.

Nerissa raised her free hand. The gesture was small, almost lazy, yet her heavy, commanding presence blanketed the nobles like a physical force. She positioned her curvaceous frame between them and the invaders, personally ushering the elites through the reinforced portal with the calm efficiency of a queen who had already calculated every possible outcome. Not a single word was spoken. Neither side moved to strike. The amphitheater held its breath.

Vince flexed his massive clawed fingers. His Man-Beast form still burned with residual power—shoulders broad enough to blot out light, muscles dense as compressed stone, the thick armored tail behind him twitching with restrained violence. He prepared to detonate forward, to cut off her retreat before the portal sealed. One thunderous step. The water parted around his bulk like it feared him.

Then—

PING.

A violent purple interface flared across his vision, flooding his red eyes with pulsing crimson runes that burned like acid.

[CRITICAL SYSTEM WARNING: TIME LIMIT REACHED]

[TRANSFORMATION OVERHEAT: MAN-BEAST FORM DISSIPATING]

[SYSTEM MANDATE: Revert to base human form immediately to allow core physical cooldown. Prolonged activation risks permanent genetic assimilation.]

Before Vince could even finish reading, an agonizing wave of heat surged through his spine.

His massive armored tail twitched violently. The thick obsidian scales softened, then collapsed inward, shrinking rapidly into the small of his back with a sickening series of wet, grinding pops. The heavy horns that had crowned his forehead dissolved into fine dark dust and receded into his skull. His expanded, multi-ton skeletal frame groaned under the sudden contraction; dense muscle compacted with brutal speed, bone density shifting violently toward a human baseline. Every nerve screamed. It felt like being crushed inside his own skin while simultaneously being torn apart from within.

Vince stumbled half a step. His chest heaved. The cold, crushing reality of eleven thousand meters of ocean pressure slammed against his shrinking body like a physical blow. Without the Man-Beast scales, without the reinforced density, the 1,100 bars of pressure threatened to pulp him in seconds.

What the hell? The thought cut through the pain with rare, sharp annoyance edged in genuine anxiety. There was no warning about a time limit on this form.

His magicless human frame—though impossibly conditioned—was never meant to withstand this depth unprotected.

"Lyrielle!" Vince barked, his voice returning to its normal grit-laced human tone, raw with strain. "Do you still have a bubble?"

Without a single heartbeat of hesitation, Lyrielle raised her hand. A fresh, compressed sphere of emerald wind-mana shot forward and engulfed him completely. The moment his feet touched the interior, the dense aero-shield snapped tight, aligning itself against his frame like a second skin. The suffocating ocean weight vanished. Fresh, pressurized oxygen flooded the bubble. Vince let out a slow, steady exhale, rolling his shoulders as his human body stabilized inside the protective grid. The residual heat of the forced transformation still radiated from his bones, but the immediate threat of being crushed was gone.

He raised his head.

Across the vast, silent expanse of the amphitheater, Nerissa stood at the threshold of the closing escape current. The last of the abyssal nobles had vanished behind her. As the heavy stone door began to slide shut with a deep, grinding groan that vibrated through the water, she turned her head one final time.

Her golden siren eyes locked onto Vince—tracking his sudden, forced transformation from a massive black monster back into a human sealed inside a fragile wind-sphere. For a fraction of a second something flickered in that regal gaze: calculation, recognition, and a cold, quiet promise.

Their eyes met across the ruined arena in a heavy, silent stare that seemed to echo through the deep.

We will meet again.

Then the sea current dissolved into the surrounding rhythm of flow, and the stone sealed her away into the inner trenches.

Vince did not waste time staring at the closed door. The pressure of unfinished business still sat heavy in his chest, but survival came first.

"Vetra," he commanded, eyes narrowing as he activated his sensory perception and swept the surrounding rock faces for natural blind spots. "Get us out of the main hall. I’m picking up a deep fissure three hundred yards east down the trench. Move."

Vetra asked no questions. She whipped her heavy tail, seized Vince by the shoulder of his coat, and propelled him alongside Lyrielle. The three of them darted away from the brightly lit amphitheater, plunging back into the dark, uncharted trenches of the Glass Sea where the light died and only the cold, watching current remained.
