Chapter 155: No mercy in the pines
The clearing in the pine forest reeked of pine sap, ozone, and the sudden, suffocating pressure of raw aura. Every breath carried the sharp tang of resin bleeding from torn bark, mixed with the metallic bite of charged air that always preceded a clash of high-tier power. The ground itself seemed to hold its breath beneath the weight of two predators who had already decided only one of them would leave this place alive.
Vetra didn’t wait for a signal. The moment Sara hurled her back into the rocky clearing, the dragonkin female planted her clawed boots into the earth, tearing two deep trenches into the soil as if the forest floor itself were soft clay. Her black hair whipped wildly in the sudden thermal draft rising off her skin, each strand crackling with residual heat. The impact of her landing sent a visible ripple through the carpet of needles and dry moss, scattering pinecones and small stones in every direction.
"You think a couple of glorified kitchen knives are going to cut through me, human?" Vetra snarled, her voice low and rough, edged with the guttural resonance of something that had never been entirely human.
Along her throat and jawline, crimson dragon-scales flared to life, glittering like polished rubies under the dappled sunlight that filtered through the high canopy. The scales expanded in rapid succession, racing down her collarbones and across the sides of her neck until they formed a partial natural armor that pulsed with internal fire. Dense, pitch-black smoke billowed from her nostrils as her core churned, the air around her shimmering with heat distortion. With a low, guttural roar that vibrated in the chest of anyone standing within fifty paces, Vetra’s arms erupted in torrential crimson dragon-flame—a primal heat so intense that the surrounding pine needles withered and curled into ash in mid-air. The flames did not merely burn; they consumed, licking upward in hungry sheets that left the soil beneath her boots scorched black within seconds.
Sara landed silently on a jagged granite boulder ten paces away, crouched like a hunting spider. Her face was a mask of cold, unyielding hatred. She didn’t exchange taunts. She didn’t flinch at the heat. Her dark eyes remained fixed on Vetra with the flat, calculating stillness of a professional who had already measured the distance, the angles, and the exact moment she intended to end this. The slight shift of her weight from heel to toe was the only indication that she was ready.
SWISH.
Sara vanished.
Vetra’s dragon-instincts screamed a fraction of a second before the strike connected. The primal warning ran down her spine like ice water poured over molten iron. She pivoted sharply, sweeping her flame-engulfed forearm in a wide arc to incinerate her attacker. The motion was fluid despite her size, the fire trailing behind the sweep in a perfect crescent of destruction that turned the air into a roaring furnace.
CLANK!
Sara didn’t engage the flame directly. She shadow-stepped through the heat-haze, appearing at Vetra’s flank in a flicker of distorted light and darkness. Her dark rapier flashed in a lethal double-serpent arc, deflecting Vetra’s sweeping claw before slicing clean across Vetra’s exposed ribcage. The blade moved with surgical precision, finding the narrow gap between hardened scale plates where flesh still remained vulnerable.
Metal bit into hardened scale. Sparks flew in a brief, brilliant spray, accompanied by the sharp, sickening smell of scorched cloth and sizzled skin. A thin line of blackish-red blood welled instantly, dark against the crimson scales.
Vetra grunted, the sound more irritation than pain, her tail whipping around with enough force to snap Sara’s spine if it had connected. But the assassin was already gone, dissolving back into the shifting shadows cast by the swaying canopy above. The tree branches moved in the rising thermal currents, creating a constantly changing lattice of light and dark that made tracking nearly impossible by ordinary senses.
"Fast," Vetra spat, wiping a trickle of blackish-red blood from her ribs with the back of one clawed hand. The wound was already sealing at the edges, the dragonkin’s natural regeneration fighting the damage even as more blood continued to seep. "A rat hiding in the shade!"
"You talk too much, beast," Sara’s voice echoed from everywhere and nowhere at once, the words seeming to come from the trees themselves, from the rocks, from the very air between them.
From the shadows of three surrounding trees, three identical dark silhouettes lunged forward simultaneously. Each shadow-clone held twin blades dripping with a viscous, dark purple liquid—a high-potency necrotic venom crafted specifically to paralyze heavy-tier targets. The venom clung to the edges of the blades in thick, slow-moving droplets that hissed faintly where they touched the air. The clones moved with perfect coordination, their footfalls silent, their trajectories calculated to cut off every possible escape vector.
"Burn in hell!" Vetra bellowed, slamming both palms onto the ground hard enough to send a visible shockwave through the soil.
[Draconic Pulse: Ignition]
A ring of pure, unadulterated fiery shockwaves erupted outward in a thirty-foot radius. The sheer concussive heat shattered the surrounding boulders into jagged fragments that spun outward like shrapnel. The ground cracked in a perfect circle, pine roots exposed and instantly blackened. Two of Sara’s shadow-clones vaporized on contact, their forms collapsing into dissipating wisps of dark energy that the flames consumed before they could reform. The third clone lasted half a heartbeat longer before it too was reduced to nothing.
The real Sara, however, had anticipated the area-of-effect blast.
Descending from directly above Vetra’s blind spot, Sara drove both rapiers downward with the full weight of her body. One blade pierced deep into Vetra’s shoulder, sinking past the scales with a wet, grinding sound as it found the softer tissue beneath. The second cut a shallow but precise line across Vetra’s neck, close enough to the major vessels that a fraction deeper would have been fatal.
The necrotic poison immediately hit Vetra’s bloodstream. Dark, spider-webbing veins spread outward from her neck and shoulder wound with alarming speed, turning her golden eyes bloodshot as her muscles began to seize. The veins pulsed and darkened, crawling across her skin like living ink. Her left arm twitched involuntarily. Her breathing hitched.
Sara landed smoothly behind her, lowering her stance as a cold, victorious smirk touched her lips. The expression never reached her eyes. "It’s over. The black-root venom freezes your heart in three heartbeats."
Vetra stumbled forward onto one knee. Her breathing turned heavy, ragged, and wet. The poison raged through her system, attempting to lock down her core, to freeze the very furnace that gave her strength. For a moment it seemed as though the assassin’s claim would prove true. Vetra’s claws dug into the scorched earth for balance. A thin trail of blackish blood ran from the corner of her mouth.
Then, Vetra began to laugh. It started as a low rumble in her chest, a vibration that made the nearby stones tremble, and grew into a terrifying, guttural roar that shook the surrounding trees. Needles rained down from the branches. Birds that had not already fled took flight in panicked bursts.
"Human poison?" Vetra growled, her crimson scales suddenly burning white-hot. The heat intensified until the air around her shimmered like the surface of a forge. "You think your filthy liquid can survive inside a dragon’s forge?!"
Inside Vetra’s chest, her primordial dragonkin mana core went into overdrive. Her internal body temperature soared to absurd levels, far beyond what any human or even most monsters could endure. The black-root venom in her veins didn’t just meet resistance—it was violently incinerated. The purple webbing on her neck turned to steam, venting out of her open wounds in white wisps of vapor as her dragon-blood burned the toxin away from the inside out. The process was visible: the dark veins receded, the bloodshot color drained from her eyes, and the seizing of her muscles reversed in a matter of seconds. Steam continued to pour from the wounds as the last of the poison was purged.
Sara’s eyes widened in sheer horror. "What...?"
Before Sara could trigger another shadow-step, Vetra moved with a speed that defied her massive frame.
[Wyvern Surge]
Vetra exploded off the ground, closing the gap instantly. The force of her launch cracked the earth beneath her previous position. Sara instinctively raised her shortswords in a desperate parry, the blades crossing in a defensive X, but Vetra didn’t bother using weapons.
CRUSH!
Vetra’s bare, scaled left hand clamped straight onto Sara’s twin blades, shattering the forged steel into a dozen screaming fragments that spun away through the air. Sparks and shards of metal glittered for an instant before falling among the pine needles. With her right hand, Vetra’s razor-sharp dragon claws drove straight through Sara’s shadow-infused armor and pierced deep into her chest. The armor, designed to turn blades and arrows, offered almost no resistance against the concentrated force of a dragonkin’s strike at point-blank range.
The impact slammed both of them into the base of a massive stone cliff face with a deafening CRACK. The rock itself fractured under the force. Dust and small chips of granite rained down around them.
GASP.
Sara’s body went rigid. Blood spilled from her lips, dripping onto Vetra’s scaled knuckles in thick, dark drops. Her eyes were wide, the cold calculation finally replaced by the stark recognition of death. Her rapiers’ hilts slipped from her limp fingers, clattering uselessly against the blood-stained pine needles below.
Vetra stood there, pinned against the stone, her eyes glowing with raw, untamed instinct. There was no hesitation in the dragonkin’s chest. No mercy for an enemy who had tried to slit her throat. The heat still radiating from her body made the blood on her claws sizzle faintly.
With a brutal twist, Vetra ripped her claws back.
Sara’s eyes went glass-clear, reflecting the dappled sunlight through the trees one last time before her body collapsed like a broken doll onto the forest floor, motionless and lifeless. The impact of her fall was soft, almost anticlimactic after the violence that had preceded it. Blood continued to pool beneath her, dark against the scorched earth and scattered needles.
Vetra stood over the assassin, chest heaving, steam still rising from the blood-soaked scales on her shoulders. The last traces of the necrotic poison vented from her wounds in thin white trails that quickly dispersed. She wiped her claws on her body with deliberate care, cleaning the blood and fragments of armor from between her scales, then looked up toward the central path where the other fights were just beginning to boil over. The sounds of distant combat—shouts, the clash of metal, the roar of other auras—were already growing louder, carried on the same thermal currents that still rose from the clearing she had just claimed...or so she thought
