Chapter 95: A Water Fight with the Girls

Morning arrived in the canyon with a soft, pale gold light filtering over the jagged red rocks. The biting chill of the night slowly gave way to a crisp, refreshing breeze as Vince, Lyrielle, and Vetra broke camp and set out along the dry riverbed.

A few hundred meters from their campsite, the sound of rushing water broke the silence of the wilderness. Nestled between two towering cliffs was a hidden oasis—a crystal-clear mountain stream cascading over smooth, moss-covered quartz stones into a deep, turquoise pool. The water was so pristine that the smooth pebbles on the riverbed thirty feet down looked as though they were floating in thin air, untouched by any trace of dust or debris from the surrounding arid landscape.

Vetra whipped her tail hitting a flat rock with a loud thud, kneeling by the water’s edge and plunging her entire face directly into the ice-cold stream. She came up soaking wet, shaking her head vigorously like a giant wild dog and spraying water droplets in every direction across the sunlit bank.

"Now that wakes you up!" Vetra boomed, wiping her face with her forearm and grinning.

Lyrielle winced slightly, stepping back to protect her pristine traveling robes from the flying spray. She knelt down much more gracefully, cupping her delicate hands to scoop a sip of water that sparkled like liquid diamonds in the morning light.

"You know, Vetra," Lyrielle began softly, offering a gentle, teasing smile, "a little restraint wouldn’t hurt. You’re a powerful dragonkin warrior, but a lady shouldn’t drink like a tavern brawler."

Vetra tilted her head, looking at Lyrielle with total, genuine confusion. "Restraint? Long ears, water is for drinking and washing off dirt. What does being a ’lady’ have to do with getting wet?"

Lyrielle sighed, though her emerald eyes sparkled with amusement. "It’s about elegance. Posture. Composure."

"Sounds like a lot of extra work to do the same thing," Vetra snorted, dipping her hands back into the pool. "If I want to be elegant, I’ll incinerate a mountain nicely."

Vince watched the two of them from a few paces back, a faint, amused smirk touching his lips. Seeing the refined high-elf and the blunt, stubborn dragonkin actually beginning to click was a sight he hadn’t quite expected when they first left Ignis-Vara after weeks of tense travel through hostile territories.

"I’ll take a quick walk up the ridge while you two wash up," Vince said, turning away from the bank. "Don’t take all morning."

"Take your time, boss!" Vetra called out.

Vince walked up the steep, gravel path leading out of the canyon. As he reached the crest of the ridge, the wind picked up, carrying with it the faint, metallic scent of chimney smoke and forge-fires from the north, mixed with the dry tang of distant desert winds.

Just as Vince was about to step onto the main road, his passive perception flared.

A heavy wood-and-iron carriage was rumbling along the dirt path below, escorted by a dozen mounted guards. Vince didn’t need to look down to know who was inside. A faint, subtle ripple of mana reached his senses—a familiar, sharp, cold signature that he recognized instantly from past encounters.

Curious, Vince closed his eyes and expanded his perception outward, pushing his spatial awareness far beyond its usual limits. His mind mapped the surrounding terrain like a web of light. Miles ahead, sprawling across the jagged waste, lay the massive, smoke-choked silhouette of a lawless city.

Malgrath?...

Vince thought silently.

Satisfied with the layout ahead, Vince turned back down the ridge toward the stream.

As he rounded the bend, he heard soft giggles and splashing water. Lyrielle and Vetra were still in the pool, standing knee-deep in the crystal water. The moment Vince stepped into view, both girls snapped their heads toward him, instantly stopping their quiet chatter.

They looked at each other with mischievous, sparkling eyes, leaning in close to exchange rapid, hushed whispers that carried faintly on the breeze.

Vince folded his arms, raising an eyebrow as he walked up to the bank. "Hey... what are we whispering about over there? And why is this bath taking so long?"

"Nothing!" both girls chimed in perfect unison, their voices far too innocent.

Before Vince could even reply, Lyrielle flashed a cheeky, playful smile. She raised her hand, her emerald mana flaring for a fraction of a second to scoop up an unnaturally massive sphere of water from the stream. Beside her, Vetra’s dark dragon tail whipped around from behind her back like a coiled spring.

"Wait—" Vince started.

SPLAAASH!

Lyrielle unleashed her magical water-bomb while Vetra swept her heavy tail through the river, creating a twin tidal wave that smashed directly into Vince, drenching him from head to toe in the freezing mountain water.

Water dripped from Vince’s dark hair, soaking straight through his black tunic.

The two girls burst into bright, triumphant laughter, high-fiving each other in the middle of the stream.

Vince stood frozen for a beat, wiping the water from his eyes. A sharp, dangerous smirk spread across his face as his violet eyes gleamed with playful menace.

"Two against one isn’t very fair, is it?" Vince murmured smoothly.

Without another word, Vince gripped the hem of his soaked tunic, pulling it off in one smooth motion and tossing it onto the dry grass, revealing his lean, scar-etched physique.

He took a two-step running leap and dived headfirst into the deep center of the pool!

BOOM!

A massive geyser of water erupted into the air, completely engulfing both Lyrielle and Vetra in a massive splashback. Vince surfaced a second later, tossing his damp hair back and offering a victorious grin as the water settled.

"How’s that for a counter-attack?" Vince laughed.

He wiped the remaining water from his face—only to open his eyes just in time to see two shadows blocking out the morning sun above him.

Mid-air, having leaped straight off the riverbed together with wild, triumphant grins, were Lyrielle and Vetra, flying straight down toward him!

"GOTCHA!" they shouted together.

SPLASH!
