My Taming System Makes Me Overpowered

Chapter 135: Clash of Opposites: Part I

The atmospheric dead zone descended over the High Sanctuary like a falling iron curtain.

Inside the grand chamber, three dozen elite Vanguard soldiers stood frozen in formation, their hands locked around the shafts of their bioluminescent spears. But the magic within the weapons had sputtered out. The natural flow of the current had vanished, replaced by an suffocating, immovable block of fluid density that made every breath feel like inhaling molten lead.

At the center of the dead water, standing before the trembling heir of House Vaelen, General Nerissa raised her chin.

Her dark sapphire armor absorbed the faint, dying light of the sanctuary’s sconces. She did not panic. She did not falter. While her soldiers struggled to raise their heavy arms against the unnatural stagnation, Nerissa adjusted her stance, her dark tail coiling beneath her with terrifying, fluid grace.

BOOM.

The massive, runic-reinforced double doors of the sanctuary didn’t explode outward—they crumpled inward, crushed silently by an invisible, deadened pressure.

Through the drifting stone dust glided the intruder.

His dark, heavy scales were covered in ancient, bone-white abyssal markings that pulsed with a cold, predatory light. Across his broad back rested his twin leviathan-bone blades, their jagged edges trailing a dark, crimson mist. He moved through the stagnant water without a single ripple, floating toward the center of the hall like a phantom ascending from the deepest trench.

"Zephros," Nerissa spoke, her voice carrying through the dead air not by magic, but through the sheer, vibrating resonance of her throat. "The Calm of the sea...they say."

The rogue merman halted twenty paces away. His dark, slit eyes swept over the paralyzed guards, past the crumbling pillars, before locking onto the supreme commander of Nethros’s armed forces.

"General Nerissa," zephros replied, his gravelly voice echoing with a low, solemn weight. "You stand in a graveyard of your own making. Seven anchors have snapped. The foundation of your empire is dust. Step aside, and let the child’s blood fulfill the tide’s return."

"Nethros was built on order," Nerissa said, her golden eyes burning with an unyielding, lethal fire. "It was built on the blood of those who sacrificed everything to chain the primordial dark. You call yourself a liberator, zephros, but you are nothing more than a rabid dog seeking to drown the world in your own madness."

Zephros lips thinned into a cold, pitiless line. "Order is just the name tyrants give to their cages. Today, the cage breaks."

He reached behind his back, drawing his twin leviathan-bone blades in a single, fluid arc. The moment the white bone left his shoulders, his abyssal markings flared with blinding intensity.

[Domain: Stagnation]

The dead water around them condensed instantly, the fluid density multiplying ten-fold. Two Vanguard guards near the entrance let out choked gasps as their chest plates groaned under the sudden, silent hydrostatic crush, their bodies dropping limp to the marble floor.

Zephros lunged forward. He didn’t swim; he cut through the dead space like a thrown spear, his right blade sweeping toward Nerissa’s throat in a silent, blinding execution stroke.

He expected her movement to be heavy, sluggish, and paralyzed by his domain.

He was wrong.

Nerissa didn’t rely on the ambient current to move. She didn’t rely on the flow of magic in the water. She drove her own, internal biological force outward, forcing her muscles to contract with terrifying, explosive violence.

CRACK-BOOM!

A localized, violent shockwave erupted from her body. She didn’t use hydro-mana to push the water—she used raw, physical momentum to enrage it.

[Tidal Authority: Furious Current]

A roaring, chaotic counter-tide exploded out from Nerissa’s frame, violently smashing into zephros’s domain of dead water. The absolute stillness of the hall shattered as two irreconcilable forces collided—the immovable, suffocating dead zone meeting a violent, kinetic tempest.

Zephros’s eyes widened in brief surprise as the kinetic shockwave slammed into his blade, forcing his trajectory off by a fraction of an inch. The white bone blade whistled past Nerissa’s cheek, cutting a single strand of her dark hair.

In the same split second, Nerissa counter-attacked.

She drew her personal sidearm—a heavy, tri-pronged trident forged from dark ocean-steel. She spun on her tail, driving the blunt pommel of the trident directly into zephros’s ribs with the force of a breaching whale.

THUD!

The impact reverberated through the hall. Zephros was blasted backward, his dark scales skidding across the marble floor for twenty feet before he dug his leviathan blade into the stone to arrest his momentum.

Up on the darkened high balcony, Vince leaned against the balustrade, his dark eyes tracking every micro-movement of the clash below. Beside him, Vetra let out a low whistle.

"She countered his Dead Water," Vetra muttered, her eyes sharp. "She isn’t trying to cast magic against his dampening field. She’s generating kinetic shockwaves inside her own body and transferring the energy through physical contact. She’s forcing the dead water to move whether it wants to or not."

"An enraged tide versus dead water," Vince said, his voice flat, completely unbothered by the crushing pressure waves bouncing off the upper walls. "He kills the energy; she forcibly injects it back in. They’re two sides of the same coin."

"Can she win?" Lyrielle asked anxiously, her hands clasped tightly over her chest.

Vince didn’t answer immediately. He watched as zephros slowly stood up from the ruined floor, wiping a small smear of blue blood from his jaw. The rogue merman wasn’t flustered. In fact, a dark, dangerous smile was beginning to spread across his battle-scarred face.

"She’s fighting to protect the child behind her," Vince grunted, pointing his thumb down toward the terrified child hiding near the altar. "Zephros isn’t fighting her—he’s fighting the clock. A wall that stands still eventually gets broken."

Down in the hall, zephros rose to his full height. His abyssal markings shifted from white to a deep, ominous violet.

"Impressive, it’s clear why you are the Tide Caller," zephros said, his voice dropping an octave as the air-water boundary around his blades began to warp violently. "You force motion into my void. You rage against the quiet. But an enraged wave always spends its energy... and the dead sea remains forever."

Nerissa raised her trident, her sapphire armor crackling with raw, kinetic pressure waves that turned the surrounding water into a boiling, chaotic tempest.

"Then come and drown in it," Nerissa spat, her golden eyes burning with divine fury. "Because as long as I draw breath, this sanctuary will not fall!"

With a deafening, underwater roar that shook the very foundations of Nethros, the two titans charged each other once more, their weapons locking in a shower of violent, kinetic sparks.
