Chapter 258 - 259: Layers of Truth
Runar remained seated in the void, the Eye of Myriad Truths fully open. Golden-white light layered with deeper conceptual radiance spilled from the eye and washed across the surface of the ancient barrier. The runes responded slowly, reluctantly, as if they had not been asked to reveal themselves in a very long time.
Layer after layer began to unfold.
He worked with absolute focus. Each stroke of the runes, each interlocking pattern, each fragment of residual intent was dissected, understood, and filed away. The process was not fast. Even with his current computational ability, the complexity forced him to proceed with care. Some sequences refused to open until he adjusted the angle of his perception. Others only revealed their true structure after he cross-referenced them against principles he already carried.
Thankfully that stupid dragon swallowed a Multiversal who actually understood runes, Runar thought as another sequence clicked into place. If I had been forced to rebuild the foundational logic from absolute zero, it would have cost me several more minutes.
To most beings, a few minutes meant nothing. To a Multiversal existence, the calculation was different. With nearly infinite thought speed and processing power, a single minute of focused work could equal millions of years of subjective comprehension. Time was one of the few resources that still mattered. Wasting it was unacceptable.
The deeper he went, the more the runes revealed their true nature.
They were not merely a writing system or a method of storing power. They were an all-encompassing framework — a language that could describe, bind, and influence principles themselves. Every new layer he unraveled did not only improve his understanding of runes. It also fed directly into the hundreds of principles he already carried. Connections formed. Gaps closed. Several principles that had previously sat at high but incomplete comprehension suddenly deepened, as if the runes had supplied the missing grammar they required.
Runar’s expression remained calm, yet a quiet note of genuine admiration moved through his thoughts.
Marvelous... truly marvelous. Whoever built this didn’t just master runes. They made runes into a skeleton that could carry entire systems of principles.
He continued without pause. The Eye of Myriad Truths kept dissecting, peeling, and organizing. Patterns that had once looked like pure decoration revealed themselves as tightly compressed instructions. Some layers governed spatial stability. Others handled temporal isolation. A few seemed designed specifically to reject any form of forced consumption — which explained why the Void Devouring Dragon had never made progress no matter how hard it tried.
After an extended period of unbroken concentration, a critical threshold arrived. The final sequence of the outermost barrier layer aligned in his mind. Runar raised one hand and pressed two fingers forward. A small, stable opening — no larger than a doorway — formed in the barrier. The edges of the gap glowed faintly with residual rune light, then settled into quiet stability.
But the moment the gap appeared, the ruin reacted.
---
A few seconds ago.
Inside the ancient structure, something that had slept for an uncountable age opened its awareness.
An ancient will stirred.
"That was a long nap..."
Residual power that had lain quiet for eons shifted like water beginning to move after a long freeze. It had sensed a disturbance so it awoke and its Perception expanded outward through the ruin’s remaining formations until it reached the barrier and the small hole that now existed there.
"Alright, let’s see who showed up this time."
A young man sat cross-legged in the void beyond the opening.
The will looked him over for a moment.
Huh. This kid’s actually pretty good-looking, even by Multiversal standards.
Of course, almost every Multiversal being was beautiful in whatever form they chose to wear. Appearance was trivial at that level. Still, there was something clean and balanced about this one’s features that stood out. The will’s thoughts drifted briefly, and a long-buried memory surfaced — an encounter with a Multiversal who had, for reasons known only to himself, taken the literal shape of a piece of feces. Even in that form the being had radiated a pure, godly divinity that made nearby laws behave with unusual respect. The multiverse was, and always had been, a place of deeply unimaginable things.
The will’s attention returned to the present visitor and fixed on the glowing eye.
"Well now... those are some interesting eyes," it muttered to itself. "Almost as good as mine."
A low, dry chuckle followed.
"Hehehe... alright, let’s play a game. My grand plan’s finally starting. I can get out of this damn place at last. Would’ve left a long time ago if that idiot dragon hadn’t sealed everything so tight nobody else could find it."
The will examined the small opening, the calm posture of the young man, and the steady light of the Eye of Myriad Truths.
"He didn’t smash his way in. He actually read the runes. That’s rare. Most of the ones who found this place just tried to break it or eat it. This one might actually be worth the trouble."
A slow smile formed in the dark.
"Yeah... let’s see how far you can go."
With that decision, the ancient will acted.
It did not wait. It did not test the waters. It used its limited control to forcefully awaken the entire ruin.
An immense wave of pure energy — dense, ancient, and carrying a distinct signature of high-level authority — erupted from the core of the structure. The wave did not stop at the surrounding void. It expanded in every direction at a speed that ignored ordinary distance, racing across billions upon billions of sectors in a continuously spreading front.
Outside the barrier, Runar felt the change an instant before it fully erupted.
The small opening he had created remained stable, yet the entire ruin suddenly woke under an external will. The wave of energy slammed outward with such force that the void itself seemed to flinch.
Runar’s eye twitched.
"The fuck..." he muttered. "This stupid ruin just announced itself to the entire multiverse."
He stared at the still-open gap in the barrier, then at the expanding energy wave that was already far beyond his ability to suppress.
A long sigh left him.
"And here I thought I’d have more time to properly study the runes and loot this place quietly. Sigh... the multiverse really is unpredictable."
He did not close the opening. There was no point anymore. Instead he remained seated, Eye of Myriad Truths still active, and kept reading the runes even as the shockwave raced outward into the wider void.
The immense energy signal continued expanding at extreme speed. It crossed billions of sectors without losing clarity, carrying a distinct, ancient signature that was impossible to ignore.
Across the multiverse, powerful beings and organizations detected it almost at the same time.
In a remote stretch of empty void, a solitary Expert-tier Multiversal who had been meditating for centuries suddenly opened his eyes.
"What the hell was that...?" He frowned. "That’s not normal. Something old just woke up."
He stood, locked onto the origin, and started moving.
Elsewhere, aboard a large pirate fleet, long-range arrays lit up with warnings. Officers started shouting.
"Captain! Big ancient energy signature just popped on the outer arrays!"
The captain, a scarred Adept-tier Multiversal, leaned forward. "Where?"
"Still locking it down, but it’s clean. Really clean. The aura feels like some kind of ruin just woke up."
The captain’s eyes lit up. "Call the scouting wings back. We’re changing course. If something that old just woke up, I want us there before the official factions claim it."
At a formal Multiversal organization outpost, the duty officer stared at the escalating readings and immediately opened a priority channel.
"Escalate this. Now. Ancient high-authority signature detected. Looks like a sealed ruin got awakened. Central hall needs to see this."
In several distant sectors, Universe Wills felt the ripple through their membranes and grew wary. Some reinforced their outer barriers. Others simply watched the direction of the wave and stayed quiet, not wanting to draw attention.
And further still, in a place so old that even residual light seemed hesitant to enter, one particularly ancient being opened its awareness. The signature brushed against memories it had not touched in a very long time.
That flavor... the presence thought. Someone actually forced that place awake.
A low hum of interest followed.
Interesting. Very interesting. I think I’ll go take a look.
Different groups started making decisions. Some moved out of greed or curiosity. Others saw the signal as a possible threat that needed to be controlled or destroyed. A few higher-level beings simply marked the location and chose to wait, sensing that whatever had woken was not simple.
The fastest responders were already on the move. Even at Multiversal speeds the distance was still huge, but several auras locked onto the coordinates and began accelerating.
Back near the ruin, the energy wave had already passed far beyond the local region. The void around the structure was still quiet for now, but the first distant ripples of approaching presence could be faintly sensed on the edge of perception.
Runar remained seated before the open gap, Eye of Myriad Truths still active. He kept reading the runes without pause, fully aware that the window of relative privacy was closing fast.
The first true trial of his wider journey had just become a lot more public than he wanted.
