Chapter 1143: The Memorial of Sword

The morning sun crested the distant peaks of the Realm of the Whispering Blades and cast a warm golden light across the tranquil valley. Li Yu opened his eyes and stretched his arms as he woke up from a deep and restful sleep. The crisp mountain air filled his lungs and he felt a sense of anticipation settling into his bones. He turned his head and looked toward the clearing near the bubbling stream.

The junior disciples of the Heavenly Sword Sect were sitting on their woven mats in perfect silence just like before we had gone to sleep. They had spent the entire night in a state of meditation and had woken up early and began their cultivation to greet the dawn. Li Yu stood up and brushed the grass from his robes and was impressed by their devotion to their craft. He walked over to the group and offered a friendly smile.

'They really do not sleep at all,' Li Yu thought while observing their focused expressions. 'Their dedication is admirable but I still prefer a good night of rest as I feel I make much better progress that way.'

"Did the night treat you well?" Li Yu asked as he approached the circle of disciples.

Feng Tianyi stood up and brushed invisible dust from his pristine white robes. He offered a fluid bow of greeting. "Our minds are clear and our Qi is settled. The ambient energy in this realm is incredibly pure and it helped us refine our focus. We are ready for the ceremony to begin."

Lin Xue and Zhou Ming echoed the sentiment as they stored their mats away. The relaxed atmosphere from the previous night remained but a new layer of solemn respect had settled over the group. Today marked the official start of the week-long memorial and the disciples were preparing themselves mentally for the task ahead.

The sound of a distant horn echoed through the valley and signaled the gathering. Sect Master Ling Wuji and Elder Huo Zheng appeared on a high stone ridge overlooking the lush landscape. They guided the vast procession of elders, commanders and disciples toward a grand ravine located near the center of the sacred ground. Li Yu walked alongside his new friends as the terrain slowly shifted from vibrant green grass to stern gray stone.

They soon arrived at the entrance of the Canyon of Sleeping Echoes.

The sight before them was breathtaking and held a heavy weight of history for this sect and the history of sword cultivation as a whole. The canyon walls rose high into the sky and cast long shadows over the wide floor below. Countless swords were driven into the packed dirt and gravel here. There were hundreds of thousands of weapons stretching as far as the eye could see. Some of the blades were pristine and gleamed in the morning light while others were heavily rusted, chipped or broken in half.

The air within the canyon carried a dense and sorrowful aura but also an incredibly sharp edge. It was a mixture of unyielding will, lingering regret and the terrifying might left behind by generations of fallen warriors.

Ling Wuji stood on a raised stone platform near the entrance of the ravine and addressed the silent crowd before him. His voice resonated with a gentle Qi that carried his words to every listening ear.

"We gather today to remember those who paved the path we walk," Ling Wuji spoke with deep reverence. "Every blade you see before you represents a life dedicated to the Dao of the sword. They fought for our sect and they died defending our beliefs on countless battlefields. It is not just direct members of our sect either but the countless friends of allies that have fought alongside us. Their physical bodies may be gone but their intent remains anchored to their weapons."

The Sect Master swept his gaze over the younger generation standing near the front of the assembly.

"The memorial ceremony is a time for learning, reflection, respect and retrospect." Ling Wuji continued. "You will walk among these ancient blades and you will open your minds to the silent echoes. Do not attempt to draw these swords from the stone and do not disturb their rest. You are here to learn from the remnants of their will and let their final lessons guide your own cultivation and path. Honor their sacrifice by carrying their legacy forward."

Ling Wuji bowed deeply toward the sea of weapons and the entire assembly followed his lead. The elders and commanders began to file into the canyon in organized groups. They spread out across the vast expanse and sought out the weapons of their former masters or fallen comrades to honor.

Feng Tianyi turned to Li Yu and offered a respectful nod. "We will begin our walk now. We must search for intents that resonate with our own paths."

"Take your time," Li Yu replied with a supportive smile. "I will follow behind and observe. I do not have a sword intent to match with these weapons but I wish to offer my respect to these people all the same. At one point or another they were the giants that held up the sky for all."

The notable junior disciples and then the remaining disciples from the entire sect that had come here stepped onto the canyon floor and began their slow progression through the graveyard of blades. They walked with measured steps and kept their eyes closed as they extended their spiritual senses outward to greet and honor each sword they passed by.

Lin Xue stopped near a slender rapier covered in a thick layer of white frost. The blade belonged to a senior sister who had fallen defending an outpost long ago. Lin Xue sat cross legged on the gravel and tried to comprehend the intent left behind in the frozen metal while honoring their memory.

Zhou Ming found a heavy broadsword missing its tip. He stood before the broken weapon and studied the ferocious breaking force etched into the rusted iron. He sought to understand the final desperate strike the warrior had unleashed before their death and comprehend their life story.

Li Yu watched them for a while and appreciated the deep connection they shared with their history. The Heavenly Sword Sect was a rigid faction but they honored their dead and those before them with a beautiful sincerity that touched his heart. He decided it was time to take his own walk through the canyon and offer his respects as well.

He stepped over the threshold and walked onto the packed dirt. He had no sword techniques or sword intent to glean from these weapons and he did not seek any martial enlightenment from the blades. He simply walked with a calm heart and offered silent respect to the lives lost in the pursuit of the Dao. There were countless people that have walked on the path towards the Dao and so many have fallen at some point along it.

As he moved deeper into the canyon, his foundation naturally interacted with the environment. Li Yu was a Creation Lord in both body and Qi. His foundation was built upon many different laws but among some of the stronger ones was Life and Death, Yin and Yang. Furthermore, the heavenly energy imbued in his body, Qi and soul from his recent tribulation radiated outward in a passive and perfectly controlled manner. He did not actively channel his power but his very existence was a beacon of vibrant life.

The dead and stagnant aura of the canyon met his radiant life force imbued with heavenly energy and a miraculous reaction occurred.

Li Yu walked past a cluster of heavily rusted broadswords that radiated a bitter and angry intent. As his shadow fell over the weapons, a soft blue light began to gather near the crossguards. An ethereal lotus formed of pure spectral energy bloomed directly out of the rust on the closest blade.

He paused and looked down in surprise at the occurrence. The spectral lotus glowed with a warm and soothing light. The bitter anger radiating from the rusted broadsword melted away and was replaced by a sense of peace. Li Yu took another step forward and the phenomenon spread.

Pink, white and blue spectral flowers sprouted from the broken blades, the cracked hilts and the rusted edges of the weapons surrounding him. The ethereal lotuses swayed in an invisible breeze as they released gentle waves of Qi into the air. The harsh and sorrowful intents lingering in the canyon were washed clean by the purifying energy within himself. .

The reaction rippled outward like a stone dropped into a calm pond. Everywhere Li Yu walked, the canyon transformed from a somber graveyard of rusting metal into a glowing garden of spectral life.

Feng Tianyi opened his eyes as the ambient energy around him shifted dramatically and he gasped as he saw the glowing lotuses blooming across the valley floor. "The residual intents are changing."

Lin Xue reached out a trembling hand and gently touched a spectral lotus blooming from the frozen rapier she was studying. The flower did not possess a physical form but it radiated a comforting warmth against her skin.

"It feels so warm," Lin Xue whispered with tears forming in her eyes. "The sorrow and the regret are fading away. The intent is becoming clear and peaceful."

Up on the raised stone platform, Elder Huo Zheng gripped the edge of a carved pillar and stared down at the canyon with wide eyes. "What is he doing to the weapons? The volume of energy changing forms is staggering."

Ling Wuji stepped forward and his hands trembled slightly as he observed the miracle unfolding below. "He is not doing anything intentionally. His very existence is soothing the lingering wills of our ancestors. Could what we have heard about him undergoing a tribulation that defies common sense actually be true and could that somehow have imparted him with something? His passive aura is offering the lingering spirits on the sword the peace they could never find in life…"

Li Yu stopped walking as he realized the magnitude of what was happening. He looked at his hands and understood that his foundation was naturally untangling the karmic threads left behind by the deaths of the warriors. He was somehow breathing a different kind of life into the stagnant energy of the canyon.

Deep within his soul his human soul was shining a radiant light that seemed to swallow everything. Close to where the Fisherman soul was, this light was halted by the natural aura that the Fisherman Soul had which was black and red, matching his killing intent and negative emotions. The Fisherman Soul was stunned by this sudden radiant light and for once seemed confused by it. What was even more stunning was that his own aura was losing to this radiant light that Li Yi’s Human Soul was generating.

The two lights fought one another inside Li Yu’s soul but if one were to carefully watch the radiant light was winning ever so slowly against the Fisherman’s, surprising the Fisherman Soul itself.

‘How is this possible?...’ The Fisherman Soul thought as it stared into the blinding light. The entire imbued lightning within Li Yu’s Ocean of Qi reacted to this light and shot up above the ocean and took on the shape of a long and slender lightning dragon with all different kinds of color lightning throughout it. The strange thing was once it formed, it didn’t move at all either, it simply stared towards the Human’s Soul location and like the Fisherman Soul stared into the blinding light.

The disciples abandoned their individual meditations and gathered around Li Yu. They did not view his actions as a disruption or a sign of disrespect. They viewed it as a divine miracle that was brought forward by their Holy Son. They looked at the glowing garden of spectral lotuses and then looked at Li Yu with a reverence that surpassed their usual strict discipline.

"You have brought rest to the restless," Feng Tianyi said with a voice heavy with emotion. He offered a deep and fluid bow. "We come here every ten years to learn from their lingering pain, their final desperate strikes and their sword intent. We absorb their sorrow and lessons to strengthen our own resolve. You are doing the exact opposite for these swords. You are healing them."

"I am just walking," Li Yu replied softly while looking at a white lotus blooming from a shattered hilt still in surprise. He couldn’t quite put into words what he was feeling and there were also what he was sensing within himself. For one reason or another, his divine sense was completely blocked off from his own internal space. "The energy here is simply reacting to possibly the heavenly laws within my body. It is an instinctual response rather than a conscious technique that I am using or my own abilities…"

"It is one of the truest manifestations of the Dao," Zhou Ming added as he wiped his eyes. "You do not need to force the world to change. The world naturally aligns with your presence. You have lifted a burden from our people that we did not even realize they were truly carrying."

Ling Wuji and Huo Zheng walked down the stone steps and approached the group of people. The elders and commanders across the canyon had also stopped their reflections to witness the glowing spectacle that was radiating out from Li Yu. The entire assembly watched as the Sect Master stopped before Li Yu.

Ling Wuji looked at the ethereal flowers covering the weapons and a single tear traced a path down his cheek.

"It is a beautiful sight," Ling Wuji spoke with a voice full of gratitude. "Some of our ancestors died in violent battles and their final moments were filled with blood, anger and unfulfilled duty, Some others died peacefully but with regrets. Their intent remained anchored here because their Dao hearts could not find closure . Your presence is purifying those harsh emotions that have remained lingering here for so long. You are granting them a final release that none of us ever could."

Huo Zheng wiped his weathered face and let out a shaky breath. "Zhan Tian always boasted that his grandson was special. I knew you were strong but I did not realize how truly special you are until today. You are giving our fallen brothers and sisters the quiet rest they deserve after centuries of silently suffering here."

Li Yu felt a sense of humility as he listened to their words. He did not seek to alter their sacred ground but he was glad his powers could bring comfort to a sect that had done nothing but support him since he was granted the title of their Holy Son.

"Life and death are part of the same grand cycle," Li Yu said thoughtfully while gesturing toward the glowing blades. "These weapons served their purpose in life and they protected your sect through dark times. The warriors poured their souls and life into the metal but they were never meant to carry that pain forever. Something within me is simply reminding the energy that it is time to return to formless state and rest."

Feng Tianyi looked at the peaceful lotuses and pondered the philosophical implications of the event. "If their sorrow and their lingering pain fades away, does this mean their martial teachings are lost to us? If the intent finds peace, how will the future generations learn from their final strikes?"

"The teachings are not lost," Li Yu answered while turning to face the top genius. For some reason he felt like he knew the answer to this, his instincts told him the truth of the matter. "The intent is simply evolving into a purer state. A seed must break apart and lose its original form to become a towering tree. The sorrow is breaking apart so new life can grow from the lessons left behind. When you study these blades now, you will not learn from their pain. You will learn from their clarity. You do not need to carry their suffering or regrets to carry their legacy forward."

The explanation struck a deep chord within the hearts of the listening swordsmen. The orthodox path of the Heavenly Sword Sect was built upon focus, hardship, rigid discipline and enduring pain to forge a strong will. Li Yu was offering them a new perspective and path for learning with what had happened today. He was showing them that strength could also be born from peace and clarity.

The junior disciples bowed to Li Yu and they held the posture for a long time. They truly saw him as a spiritual beacon now after this miracle that occurred. He was no longer just a person holding a ceremonial title given by the temple. He was a spiritual symbol that seemed to be able to improve the sect for the better.

The older generation of elders and commanders watched the interaction and shared a moment of realization themselves. They had spent their lives carrying the burdens of their predecessors and they felt a physical weight lifting from their shoulders ever so slightly as the spectral lotuses continued to bloom across the canyon.

The week-long memorial continued after this but the atmosphere was fundamentally changed. It was no longer a heavy and somber event filled with sorrowful reflections and lessons to be learned. It became a celebration of life, a peaceful farewell to the ancestors and a joyous embrace of the future and what it can bring.
