Chapter 1159: The Ice Gardens
Several days passed in the frozen ruins of the capital and the secondary armory transformed from a cold stone hall into a temporary sanctuary for the scattered survivors. Elder Cai and his disciples established a rigorous routine to keep everyone safe from any lingering threats. They expanded their patrol routes deeper and maintained a constant vigil over the perimeter while also continuing to scout.
The sword cultivators empathized with the tragedy surrounding them but they kept their distance from the mortals. They treated everyone well though and provided thick furs to ward off the chill while focusing heavily on their own cultivation. Ren Shu and the others practiced their sword arts in the adjacent courtyards to keep their skills sharp. Their slender blades cut through the falling snow with precise arcs.
They practiced the core techniques of their sect while relying on the tragedy that happened here to push themselves even further. They were sword fanatics who understood that tragedy was a part of the martial path and had seen countless deaths in their life already. They offered polite nods to the survivors but they did not engage in idle chatter with them either. They were warriors preparing for a potential battle rather than caretakers for a broken populace. Their duty was to secure the area until Elder Huo Zheng returned with further instructions.
Li Yu stepped into a very different role during this time. He set up his several different cauldrons outside and spent his days cooking nourishing meals for everyone present. He continued using his normal ingredients to ensure the fragile bodies of the survivors could digest the food safely. The meat, vegetables and plain white rice provided the exact sustenance the mortals needed to recover their strength. While doing that, he was also making a separate meal for the cultivators to enjoy and restore energy. His actions were greatly appreciated by both sides and the Holy Son really became the camp cook.
Li Yu did not just cook food for the people either. He listened to their stories and offered a calm ear for both sides. The old man who leaned on a cracked wooden stick often sat near the cooking station to soak in the warmth of the smokeless flame.
"My farm was just beyond the eastern ridge." The old man said with a trembling voice while staring into the fire. "We grew the hardiest root vegetables in the province and some of the tastiest. I had a son but he was away from home at the time. The poor boy, I don’t even want to imagine what has happened to him. I only hope it was a painless death now."
"I am sorry for your loss sir." Li Yu replied while handing the man a warm bowl of porridge. "Eating and surviving is the best way to honor his memory as I am sure he would want you to live well. You carry his memory with you and his spirit so you must live well."
The young mother also found comfort near the fire and was less awkward around Li Yu than the other cultivators. She held her two small children close and watched the flames dance under the cauldron. Li Yu would often hand the children small pieces of roasted meat to keep them occupied and quiet. He naturally became somewhat of a spiritual anchor for the broken people. His presence brought a sense of stability to an environment that had been violently turned upside down. The mortals began to look to him for guidance and reassurance as the harsh days dragged on at a subconscious level.
Crown Princess Yuehan found herself drawn to that same steady presence as well. As the days blurred together, she spent almost every waking moment standing or sitting near Li Yu. She helped him wash the wooden bowls and distribute the warm porridge to her subjects. Meilin and Gao stayed close by but Yuehan always gravitated toward Li Yu. His quiet strength was a reliable shield against the crushing despair of the dead city.
'Why do I feel this pull toward him.' Yuehan thought while watching him chop fresh herbs on his wooden board. 'I only really met and got to know him a bit recently but my chest aches when he steps away.'
She questioned her own mind and the whirlwind of emotions swirling in her heart. She had lost her family and her old life just a short time ago. Her empire was reduced to rubble and her royal title felt like a hollow echo in the wind. Yuehan remembered the grand banquets and the grandeur that she once knew. Now she wore stained clothes and ate simple but delicious food in a cold alleyway. The contrast was jarring and it made her cling to the one thing that felt solid.
Li Yu was the stable pillar left in her shattered world as nothing seemed to be able to shake him. She wondered if this growing affection was a budding love or just a trauma response. Her soul was bruised and she knew she might just be clinging to the person that provided the most comfort in the room for survival. It was difficult to separate genuine feelings from the overwhelming need for safety and comfort in such times.
She admired how he treated her, her people and everyone around him. Yuehan couldn’t even imagine where her mind would be if Li Yu wasn’t one of the people that had come here. He was the Holy Son of the Heavenly Sword Sect and a prominent figure in the Myriad Realms with his background but he knelt in the snow to feed mortal children. He possessed an incredibly powerful cultivation and even more so when factoring in his age, yet he handled fragile lives with exceptional care. These traits only deepened the complex feelings taking root in her heart.
Li Yu noticed the subtle shifts in her behavior over time but didn’t think too much of it. His keen senses picked up on her lingering gazes and the way she stood just a fraction closer to him than necessary. He possessed an understanding of human nature and he recognized the vulnerable state of her heart. Having had romantic feelings and experiences with Lian, he was able to vaguely guess what was happening with the princess and how she might see him. He treated her with the utmost respect and maintained the boundaries of a supportive friend.
"You have been working hard today." Li Yu said while taking a stack of empty bowls from her hands. "You should rest inside the armory and let Meilin handle the next serving."
"I prefer to stay out here and help you." Yuehan replied softly while looking up at his face. "Working keeps my mind occupied and being here and helping brings me peace."
"If that is the case then no problem at all." Li Yu nodded and focused on cleaning the wooden bowls with a splash of warm water. "Do what is best for yourself right now and your people. It won’t be easy but you will get through this."
Over the last few days, Yuehan has also come to understand the unspoken boundary he was drawing through his actions. While he never pushed her away, he never took any steps forward to meet her towards her own advancing moves. He always kept a respectful distance between them but was there with constant support.
It did not seem like he was not rejecting her as a person. He was protecting her from making decisions born of trauma and desperation. When she realized that, Yuehan couldn’t help but fall for him even more. She felt a sense of gratitude for his honorable character as a lesser man might have used her vulnerability to claim a princess for himself but Li Yu did not seem to be doing that.
"Thank you for being a good friend." Yuehan smiled softly and stepped back to give him the space he requested. "I will try to be patient with my own heart."
Later that night, Li Yu sat alone by the fading embers of his cooking fire. The survivors and the princess were asleep inside the armory under the watchful eyes of Gao and Meilin. Elder Cai rested near the entrance while the Heavenly Sword Sect disciples meditated in the dark after their duties were completed for the day. Li Yu pushed his divine sense outward and swept the frozen ruins of the capital.
A deep unease settled into his bones over the last few days. While it seemed like all he was doing was cooking and taking care of the people around him, he had been constantly on edge. His instincts flared with a persistent warning that danger still lingered nearby. He could not pinpoint any specific Qi signatures but he was also told the Hollow Husk were masters of stealth. Their rubbery squid-like bodies and potent illusions could hide them from conventional tracking methods and that worried him. He felt like he was being watched by unseen eyes hiding in the shadows at all times but he did not let it affect him too much.

'They are still here.' Li Yu thought while scanning the desolate streets with a sharp gaze. 'I cannot see them but my soul tells me they have not left the Frostveil Realm. They are waiting for something.'
He remembered the grim look on Elder Huo Zheng's scarred face when the veteran warrior identified the enemy. The Hollow Husk was one of the species that his grandfather Zhan Tian had fought inside the zone along with his army. Zhan Tian was the Worldkeeper and a cultivator of unimaginable power. If a man like Zhan Tian considered these creatures a serious threat, then they were a terrible blight upon the Myriad Realms. They consumed entire populations for nutrients and left no trace of their victims behind.
‘I wonder if there is another goal for them besides just wanton slaughter to feed. Perhaps that is all there is to it, a biological need to feed that drives them forward. Perhaps there is another reason altogether and we just don’t understand. Cultivators destroy and take for their path as well so I cannot really judge them from doing something similar. Perhaps to them, what they are doing is perfectly natural and what we do is what seems cruel. Either way, I will fight to protect those I care about and it is as simple as that.’ Li Yu thought and firmed up his own convictions. He wasn’t here to debate or figure out what was morally right or wrong. If they were a threat to his goals and dreams, then there is only one thing they will face, death.
Zhan Tian had led armies into the zone to push back horrors that defied natural law and posed a threat to the realms. The fact that a splinter faction of these squid like monsters had slipped through the cracks was an alarming development that needed to be rectified. Did they slip through or were there other entrances or groups that were in hiding. If they were allowed to multiply and feed, they would eventually become a tide that could threaten the Heavenly Sword Sect and even his clans if they didn’t already process the power to do so already.
Li Yu clenched his fist and felt the chaotic power of his domain surging through his body. The Yin Yang vortex within his soul space rotated slowly and generated a strength that anchored his mind and brought clarity to his thoughts. He had witnessed the aftermath of their endless hunger and he saw the shattered lives they left in their wake. He looked at the steel doors protecting the few mortals who managed to survive the slaughter. The fear in the eyes of the young mother and the old farmer fueled a growing resolve within his heart to not let it happen to him.
He made a silent vow under the starless sky that he would hunt these creatures down and eliminate them from the Myriad Realms. He would use his strength to ensure the cultivation world maintained as much peace as possible without their interference. The cultivation world was inherently violent and filled with struggles for resources but the Hollow Husk represented another high level threat. They were a chaotic variable that threatened everything his family had built and protected over the eras.
Li Yu would not allow them to roam free and turn other vibrant kingdoms into graveyards. He prepared his mind for the inevitable confrontation. The creatures might be hiding in the dark using their potent illusions but Li Yu knew his Koi martial spirit and his powerful soul would be ready for them when they came. He settled into a meditative stance and let his aura blend with the freezing wind as he waited for the hidden enemy to make a mistake.
The following morning dawned with a clear sky that offered a rare glimpse of sunlight breaking through the gloomy clouds. Yuehan approached Li Yu while he was packing away his cooking supplies in frustration that nothing happened over the night.
"Li Yu," Yuehan called out softly to gain his attention. "I have a request to make if you are willing to accompany me away from the camp for a short while."
Li Yu stood up and brushed the dust from his robes. "Where do you need to go?"
"There is a secluded glacier garden outside the capital walls," Yuehan explained while looking toward the distant snowy peaks. "My mother first took me there as a child and continued to do so through our lives. She hid a specific family keepsake beneath one of the ice monuments as our little secret. It isn’t worth anything but it means the world to me. I want to retrieve it and I seek a moment of closure in a place that holds good memories. Would you come with me?"
"I will go with you," Li Yu agreed without hesitation. "It is good to find closure where possible and the change of scenery will help your mind. Have you told Gao and Meilin?"
"I told them to stay here and help guard the survivors," Yuehan replied. "They wanted to come but I prefer to keep this journey quiet and small."
Li Yu informed Elder Cai of their brief departure and the two of them set off across the frozen valley. Elder Cai wanted to send some additional people with them but Li Yu felt that this journey was important to the princess for her state of mind and declined. He was confident in himself that they should be able to escape any dangers. The scouts have all returned back alive many times through their missions so he felt it was okay.
The journey away from the ruined capital was surprisingly peaceful. They walked side by side through the deep snow and left the melted stone of the city far behind. Yuehan wanted to walk the same path her mother used to take her towards the garden instead of flying directly there.
The Frostveil Realm showcased its breathtaking landscapes as they ventured deeper into the wild. Towering crystalline trees sparkled under the faint sunlight while vast fields of untouched snow stretched toward the horizon. The crunch of their boots on the icy ground provided a rhythmic soundtrack to their quiet journey. The natural beauty of the realm was a stark contrast to the horrific destruction Li Yu had witnessed over the past few days.
They walked for over an hour before reaching a narrow canyon carved between two towering mountains of blue ice. Yuehan led the way through the winding passage until the canyon opened up into a hidden valley. Li Yu stepped into the clearing and admired the breathtaking sight before him.
The glacier garden was a sprawling sanctuary filled with rare winter blooms and carved ice monuments. Pale blue flowers grew from the frozen soil and emitted a faint luminescent glow that illuminated the shadows. Delicate frost vines wrapped around elegant archways while small frozen ponds reflected the sky like polished mirrors. The Hollow Husk had not discovered this secluded area, most likely because there was nothing of value to them here. The garden remained pristine and untouched by their destruction.
"It is just as beautiful as before.," Yuehan whispered while walking among the glowing flowers. A genuine sense of serenity washed over her face as she took in the familiar sights but there was clearly also a great sadness that was there as well.
She navigated through a maze of frozen hedges until she reached a small pedestal carved from a single block of clear ice. Yuehan brushed the snow away from the base and pressed her hand against a hidden mechanism. The ice clicked softly and a small compartment slid open to reveal a polished wooden box. She picked the box up and opened the lid to find a delicate jade hairpin resting on a bed of silk.
"My mother wore this when she first met my father," Yuehan said while running her fingers over the smooth jade. "She told me she wanted me to have it when I found my own path in life. I am glad it is still here."
She closed the box and held it tightly against her chest. The burden of her grief seemed to lift slightly in the serene atmosphere of the garden but tears were running down her face. She had found a tangible piece of her family legacy to carry forward and the moment provided a slight closure for her wounded heart.
Li Yu smiled as he watched her find a sliver of peace but his expression hardened a fraction of a second later. His incredibly powerful soul detected a sudden and unnatural ripple in the ambient Qi. The shift was so subtle that a normal cultivator might have dismissed it as a trick of the freezing wind but Li Yu possessed a soul far stronger than others.
He narrowed his eyes and scanned the edges of the pristine garden. The Hollow Husk were known as masters of stealth and their illusions could fool the eyes of senior elders. They could blend into the background and mask their presence to perfection. Li Yu’s soul picked up on those empty spaces gliding through the glowing flowers.
‘Whatever I said next, act casually and as you were before. We are not alone here, the enemy is here. I am trying to figure out how many there are but so far, the strongest one I detect is at the Origin Awakening Realm so we are okay. We have the upper hand because they do not know that I know. I will get the jump on them after I am able to locate them all.’ Li Yu instructed via a mental communication.
‘I understand, let me know what I need to do when the time comes.’ Yuehan was stunned by the information but she was a highly skilled cultivator at the Tribulation Realm that was not weak. She was ready for a fight and a chance to take some vengeance but she kept acting normally as Li Yu instructed.
Li Yu was locking onto their positions as he was looking around at the flowers while working his way closer to the princess. His mind raced on how best to deal with these enemies as he wanted to make sure none could escape.
